LBA1 and LBA2 on Mac OS X Guide [updated: 01-11-2011]

If you have a Mac OS X and want to play LBA, don't worry, this thread will guide you to get this brilliant game up and running using Boxer.

Boxer is a DOS game emulator based in the well known DOSBox, but this one will make things easier. You won't need to get your hands dirty in command line prompts and configurations, you just need to drag and drop the games to Boxer and you will be playing in short time.

So what you will need?!
Note: If you use MacBook Air and you don't have an external CDrom drive just go to the end of this guide or follow GOG versions section.

LBA 1 GOG version / LBA 2 GOG version:
The simplest way to get LBA working on Mac. No worries about configurations.
  1. Download both games from GOG and install them in a Windows machine (XP, Vista, 7, whatever)
  2. Get both games installed folders and copy them into your Mac (place it anywhere)
  3. Open Boxer and drag-n-drop each of game folder into "Import a new game" icon. Do this each game at a time.
  4. Wait till Boxer finish importing your game.
  5. Choose a name for the game version.
  6. Voila! You can now play the games.

LBA 1 CD version / LBA 1 Floppy disk content:
  1. Insert your LBA1 disk into the drive and open Boxer application.
(You will notice 2 cdrom devices appear on your Mac, one for the game data and the other for the music tracks. We will use the ADELINE device during the installation process)
  2. Drag-n-drop ADELINE driver into Boxer's "Import a new game" option icon.
(Boxer will start reading CD and configure your desktop for the next installations steps)
  3. Wait until appears the following window and than choose "Launch installer"
  4. Follow the onscreen instructions:
    • Choose your language. (if you want a fan translation just choose English and we will setup it later)
    • Select "Hard Driver Installation"
    • Choose to install in the "C:" drive.
    • Just let the game be installed in the default folder "C:\LBA".
  5. On the setup main menu window set the following:
    • Video Card Configuration: choose "Don't know"
    • Music Sound Card Configuration: choose "Sound Blaster 16, 220h"
    • FX Sound Card Configuration: choose "Sound Blaster 16, 220h"
    • Speech Configuration: change "Keep Speech Files on Hard Drive" to YES
    • Save Parameters and Quit to DOS
  6. After quitting installation setup you end in a black DOS prompt window. Just selected the "Finish importing" button. Boxer will start importing your CDrom into hard drive.
(This will avoid future issues of CD request while initializing the game)
  7. When the importing CD finishes you will be prompt to choose a name for your game. Just type what you want: "Little Big Adventure 1", "LBA1", "Relentless", whatever...!
  8. You can also choose a picture to identify LBA1 on your collection. Just google images for "Little Big Adventure covers" copy and past it and you will find something like the its shown above.
  9. Don't choose to run the game just yet. We still have some things to finish.
  10. Click in the "Show in Finder" button.
(A Finder window will appear with the game selected)
  11. Click in the right mouse button (or press CTRL + left button) and choose "Show Package Contents".
(this will open a finder window with game's content)
  12. Now copy the VOX and FLA cdrom folders into this package in "C.harddisk\LBA" folder.
(Its important to make this section. This will prevent the game to hang when asked for Voice files)
    • Game's Language Note: if you want to change game's language this is the time to do it. Just copy the RESS.HQR and TEXT.HQR files from your translation into "C.harddisk\LBA" folders.
  13. You can now click on the "Launch game" button. A new back DOS prompt window will appear.
  14. Choose the "lba.exe" option at the bottom of screen and then just click on the button "Launch every time".
(This will setup Boxer to always run lba.exe when you start the game.

LBA 2 CD version:
  1. Insert your LBA2 disk into the drive and open Boxer application.
(You will notice 2 cdrom devices appear on your Mac, one for the game data and the other for the music tracks. We will use the LBA2 device during the installation process)
  2. Drag-n-drop LBA2 driver into Boxer's "Import a new game" option icon.
(Boxer will start reading CD and configure your desktop for the next installations steps)
  3. Wait until appears the following window and than choose "Launch installer"
  4. Follow the onscreen instructions:
    • Choose your language. (if you want a fan translation just choose English and we will setup it later)
    • Hard Disk Installation: choose the default "C:\LBA2" folder and start the installation.

  5. At the new setup window, choose "Attempt to configure automatically" and follow the on screen instructions.
(This will configure the sound settings for you)
  6. Set the option "Keep voices on Hard Disk".
  7. Choose "copy Music files on hard disk".
  8. When finish copying, just continue by pressing "Ok" option.
  9. Now "Quit" the installation setup.
  10. After quitting installation setup you end in a black DOS prompt window. Just selected the "Finish importing" button. Boxer will start importing your CDrom into hard drive.
(This will avoid future issues of CD request while initializing the game)
  11. When the importing CD finishes you will be prompt to choose a name for your game. Just type what you want: "Little Big Adventure 2", "LBA2", "Twinsen's Oddyssey", whatever...!
  12. You can also choose a picture to identify LBA2 on your collection. Just google images for "Little Big Adventure 2 covers" copy and past it and you will find something like the its shown above.
  13. Don't choose to run the game just yet. We still have some things to finish.
  14. Click in the "Show in Finder" button.
(A Finder window will appear with the game selected)
  15. Click in the right mouse button (or press CTRL + left button) and choose "Show Package Contents".
(this will open a finder window with game's content)
  16. Now copy the VOX and VIDEO cdrom folders into this package in "C.harddisk\LBA2" folder.
(Its important to make this section. This will prevent the game to hang when asked for Voice files)
    • Game's Language Note: if you want to change game's language this is the time to do it. Just copy the RESS.HQR and TEXT.HQR files from your translation into "C.harddisk\LBA2" folders.
  17. You can now click on the "Launch game" button. A new back DOS prompt window will appear.
  18. Choose the "lba2.exe" option at the bottom of screen and then just click on the button "Launch every time".
(This will setup Boxer to always run lba2.exe when you start the game.

At the end, you can setup your game library to look like mine.

MacBook Air users:
Air users won't get the games running without some extra work. Due to a missing CDrom drive something needs to be done to get the games working. Otherwise, you can always get GOG versions to simplify the process.

Here are some tips:
  • You must import the game using a pre-installed games folder. You can use this folder to drag and drop into Boxer. You can also use a known OSX image like *.CDR or *.DMG to import the game.
  • You will need a IMG/BIN cd game image file together with the cd CUE sheet file.
(Note this aren't OSX known cd images - you need this because you must have the game in CD mixed mode (data + tracks) - you will probably need another OS like Windows or Linux to create this type of images)
  • When finish installation you must go into your games Boxer inspector options and drag-n-drop the CUE file into Drives tab.
(This will include the cd image into Boxer game package)
  • After dragging, just choose the option "Included in gamebox" by right mouse click in the imported CUE file.
(This will copy the content of cd image file into Boxer)

The reason to have a CD image its to get the game fully compatible and without CD check errors. CUE files will enable you to play the game together with music tracks.

If you by any chance have another Mac OS X machine with a CDrom drive, you can always do all this guide sections in that machine and later import the Boxer content into Air.
