Double Fine Kickstart project

This is precisely what I thought we should have done for LBA3, start raising money (contributions) to show how much we really want a new LBA adventure. I would gladly contribute $50-60 right now to demonstrate my interests in LBA3.

At lunch today, the project was $729K, now it is $1 Million.

Isnt this something else?
The physconaughts project is seperate - with Notch offering to help pay.

This project is for a point and click.

Over a six-to-eight month period, a small team under Tim Schafer's supervision will develop Double Fine's next game, a classic point-and-click adventure.
Id happly donate to P2, but this much for a point and click is just stupid.
I love point an clicks, but they just arnt anywhere near as costly.

Sorry, you are right about P2.

But my point is still valid about LBA3...

They really raised over 1 million dollars? This number makes me raise an eyebrow.

Woah, this looks legit. OMFG. This is awesome. What a huge success! I'm tempted to pay something too. Will see.

Kickstarter is great - and it might be worth a shot, but its very reputation based to get this much money.

Its not impossible to do the same sort of funding alone anyway though, its how PioneerOne paid for itself - purely based on donations.

I would be so thrilled if we fans could, though donations, raise enough money to get LBA3 started.

It's up to Fred. Maybe he'll make a kickstart project too.

I think Fred said he was keen to try all sorts of funding/payment methods. Not necessarily for LBA, just in general.

I don't know where to post this so I put this here:

Frederick raynal is giving a conference about alone in the dark at GDC:
http://www.gdconf.com/conference/classicgames.html

maybe he will talk about Lba on interview too, I don't know, I'm just speculating...

He has got a twitter account too:

https://twitter.com/#!/Ludoid_Raynal

I asked him if he will talk about LBA on GDC and if he will also raise money with kickstarter. I think that I won't have any response because it seems that he doesn't use often twitter...

Ps: sorry for my english...

It's not for Psychonauts 2 but for a classic point-n-click adventure.
And seriously, $300.000 for a game budget really isn't a lot. As Tim Shafer has already mentioned. 300k is even less than the budget for DOTT (without inflation correction). The last few games by DF had a budget of $2M.
Anyway... I pledged $31 to the DF Adventure game. It's more than I usually pay for those indie game bundles, but I wanted to contribute to this signal.

Grim Fandango cost 3 million dollars to make (according to his twitter). Also if I'm not mistaken the value of the dollar was higher back in '97. So let's say, if they make it to 4 million dollars in this kickstart it would be awesome.

[edit - and Psychonauts was about 12 million. How do they get to these numbers? And why? What are they throwing that money at exactly?]

I think I'll wait for the last day of the kickstart and then I'll pay something.

meh, I will wait till its for a genre I want :P
I like point and clicks, but between TT and a bunch of German company's theres actually enough released and on the horizon for me.
(not to mention, being late to the party, I just found out Phoenix Wright/Ace Atterny is a brilliant set of games)

But $1million is!
At least, for a indie point and click game surely? I can't image they are nearly as expensive as action-adventures or platformers to make.

I hope they spread that money over other projects. Getting 3x plus your budget doesn't necessarily make a better game.

Phoenix Wright is indeed great, I prefer it over Layton.

If I had 13 Million, I would much rather have a LB3.

But I am glad they might produce a Psychonauts 2...

Yeah, that Penny Arcade clip did have some interesting points, one of which will be the contributors expectations. I think this project grew so quickly partially because some didn't read carefully (including me ) and thought this was actually for Psychonauts 2, not just some point & click adventure. But most contributors are probably riding on fond memories of Tim's older adventure games so are happy to support a new similar project.

This made me laugh...

Yeah, the fanbase of the genres overlaps enough for people not to get too pissed off.
But still, if you ask for $300,000 and get $2,000,000 youi really should says what your doing with the rest.
Either invest it back into other game projects, or donate to charity I guess.
Sure, save some extra for going over budget, but not that much :P

btw, if you like CheckPoint the same people do loads of stuff here:

I don't think they should donate it to charity or save it for later projects. It's not like money can actually be "wasted" since it's not a physical resource, and the economy can't get less balanced than it is now by them overspending on their project. People gave their money to them for this project. So worst case scene scenario, they'll quadruple the salaries of the employees working on the game. This will only make them slightly rich, not filthy rich. I'm totally fine with that.

Whats wrong with donating it to other game projects? Support some less well known developers or projects?
Its not like people can complain about that - if "they get paid more" then "they can donate their pay" to other projects.

Quote:

Depends how you define wasted, it can be spent better in some areas then others.

Worst case scenario is not higher salary, incidentally, its that they think they need to spend the money so they start doing stuff thats not really needed for the game.

For instance, getting a bigger team (bigger can often be worse then a small tight group), doing more detailed (but not nicer) graphics, hiring famous voice actors etc.

Not saying they will do all that, but its possible.

Thats why I think either doing a separate project as well, or supporting other small teams might be more worthy.

..except those, like Logan, that thought it was for Physconaughts 2 :P

I don't know, maybe you're right.

But this project specifically is important because the more money it makes, the more awareness it will raise to crowd funding. It's the first time something like that happens on this scale. Every dollar raised is another kick in the nuts for the middleman.

LBA3 is probably one of the more viable projects you could kickstart out there, but it might have to wait until Kickstarter gets more friendly to non-US donors. Frederick Raynal's name has some clout with gamers still.

LBA3 won't be able to be funded with Kickstarter, most likely. A game on that scale will require at least a 13 million dollar budget.

Where do you get those numbers from?? I'm almost sure LBA1&2 were triple A games back in the day, but nowadays you wouldn't need a Triple A budget to make a LBA sequel all of us could enjoy.

Now, if you want something with uber-graphics, cross-platform thingy, then yeah.

Even then, LBA is not popular enough to get enough money via Kickstarter projects. Final Fantasy VII? That's another story :P
