Challenges

In here you can find challenges that you can play after having finished the game. A challenge is a goal of some sort, that lets you play the game in an unintended but challenging way. Most challenges require (extensive) bug exploiting, others require clever thinking, or even both. There are several difficulties, and some of them are not proven possible yet.

Every challenge is in it's own post, so it is easy to find all related info about them. They aren't posted in any particular order, but a hyperlink to each one is sorted in the tables of contents below.

Please post any challenge you think of that hasn't been posted yet, and we will link it in the TOC for you.
The TOC isn't ever really completed, new challenges can be invented at any time. If you know of any great one, please fill in the difficulty and length so we can sort them into the overviews. And if your challenge has yet to be proven, please elaborate on the reasoning why.

Notes
The original challenges listing (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=408223&postcount=13) thread in General is still open for discussions, so don't post them here.
We're still missing a lot of info on some of the confirmed challenges, I'm working on it.

Length: Short
Type: Achievement
200 BlowgunNoBall Challenge

Status:  Confirmed By: moothead (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=325645&postcount=59), ...

Description: Complete the blowgun test at the school of magic for the first time, without your magic ball

Normally you do this using your magic ball, which is the easiest way of hitting the targets the first time. If you don't have the ball, the test will be a lot harder though.

After you complete the blowgun test by any means necessary, you receive the blowgun reward, which is the ultimate weapon for hitting these kinds of targets.

Requirements:
None

Required for:

Progressing further without weapons or items in your inventory, while keeping the ability to reach Green magic level

Solution:

You can use nitro-meca pinguins to explode the targets, but this requires some trial and error.

Length: Unknown
Type: Shortcut
200 Statue Challenge

Status:  Unconfirmed

Description: Try to get into the statue of Dark Monk before it is triggered on Celebration Island

Normally you get into the statue by triggering it with the completed key of Dark Monk. This key is created by finding all four key fragments, which are owned by the four races of Zeelich. If you skip getting the key though, and succeed in entering the statue regardless, you could skip a major part of the game.

Requirements:
Unknown

Required for:

Skipping magic levels Yellow, Green and Red while finishing the game
Reaching only magic level Fire while finishing the game
Reaching Dark Monk's statue on Celebration Island without the Emperor's Sword

Reasoning:

It has been discussed before that a JSB could get you into the invisible statue, but so far no one has been able to reproduce this.
Retrieving all four key fragments automatically gives you the Fire magic level, so getting those fragments breaks the requirements of the NoMagic Challenge.
Because the palace is probably the only thing that requires the emperor's sword to enter, and you get the sword by visiting Island CX, entering the statue without the key might mean you won't have to visit Island CX.

200 ForeignWeapon Challenge

Status:  Confirmed By: LtDemolition (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=347718&postcount=29), ...

Description: Get the Pisto laser of Zarnon on Twinsun (and finish the game?)

Normally you get the Pisto Laser back on Zeelich, after you had returned to Twinsun. But for this challenge, you should get it before you return to Twinsun.

Doing so will mean you can fight your enemies on Twinsun with the powerful Pisto Laser, rather than any of the lower level weapons you'd normally have when you are there.

This challenge is similar to the ForeignSword Challenge (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=418177&postcount=14), which is about getting the Emperor's Sword on Twinsun rather than the Pisto Laser.

Requirements:

...

Required for:

Using the Pisto Laser of Zarnon on Twinsun

Solution:

To be able to return to Twinsun with the Pisto Laser, you could JSB over the tunnel on Otringal, in which you would normally get you captured.
From there you can continue the storyline as if you are visiting Zeelich for the second time, and then return to the tunnel and get captured when you have the Laser.

200 Lunar Challenge

Status:  Confirmed By: J McKalling (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=407883&postcount=1) (attachment 5), ...

Description: Get outside on the Emerald Moon without wearing the SpaceSuit (you'll survive, believe me!)

The outside area on Emerald Moon is void of atmosphere, so the storyline tells us. If you enter one of the airlocks, put your spacesuit into the locker and lure any of the guards into the airlock, then quickly put on your spacesuit again, you'll see he will be sucked out of the room because of the void.

This is only because the game is programmed to work this way though, it is not necessarily impossible to walk on the outside without a spacesuit.

Requirements:
None

Required for:
None

Solution:

If you enter one of the airlocks and put your suit in the locker, using the JSB, you can try to jump on top of the just closed outside door.
From there you can fall off the door and land on the outside area without your spacesuit.
This is because the isometric scene exit that transports Twinsen from the airlock room to the outside area, is available inside the airlock room. It is located directly against the outside side of the closed outer door. Obviously you need to get to that side first.

2012-09-29, 00:26
Difficulty: :confused2:
Length: Unknown
Type: Alternate finish
200 FireOnly Challenge

Status:  Unconfirmed

Description: Try to finish the game without reaching yellow, green or red magic levels, but reaching only Fire

The most usual way to go about it, is simply reaching all levels in their intended order. But it is possible to skip a lot using the JSB, and as such it is even possible to skip all three Magic Levels before you reach the last, Fire Ball.

Requirements:

Statue Challenge (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=418030&postcount=3) or ManualCX Challenge (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=418166&postcount=12)
BraveZeelich Challenge (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=418167&postcount=13)

Required for:
None

Reasoning:

It is possible to reach planet Zeelich after returning to it for the second time, without having magic levels at all.
But if you go about acquiring your Fire ball, you need to get all fragments of Dark Monk's key.
The Sups fragment definitly requires the Emperor's sword (because of the unconfirmed Palace Challenge), which definitly requires a visit to Island CX.
To be able to get there, you need to follow the route from the Island CX Survivor (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=418089&postcount=28), to Rick (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=418085&postcount=24) and then Johnny Rocket (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=418067&postcount=7), and lastly the Queen of the Mosquibees for the key of passage to Island CX.
Unfortunately, due to a bug with Rick's café, it is impossible to enter without automatically getting magic level Red at this point.
So back again at the goal of the challenge, to get Fire level without any other magic level, you automatically get level Red before you can get to it.

Difficulty: :confused2:
Length: Unknown
Type: Shortcut
200 ManualCX Challenge

Status:  Unconfirmed

Description: Try to get to Island CX manually from Otringal without crash-landing with Baldino, talking to the Island CX Survivor (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=418089&postcount=28), Rick (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=418085&postcount=24) or Johnny Rocket (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=418067&postcount=7), or getting the passage key from the Mosquibee queen

Normally you talk to all those people in order, to get the passage key to Island CX. But if there is a way to not need that key, you won't have to talk to all those people, and can skip to getting to Island CX immediately.

Requirements:
Unknown

Required for:

Reaching only magic level Fire while finishing the game
Acquiring the Emperor's sword while keeping the ability to return to Twinsun

Reasoning:

To be able to get to Island CX, you need to follow the chain of events from crash-landing, talking to the Island CX Survivor, Rick, Johnny Rocket and showing the ring of dissidents to the Queen of the Mosquibees, and getting her key of passage after she got captured.
The Queen will only give you the key of passage if you've completed the Test of Truth, which requires the ring of dissidents.
You get the ring by speaking to Johnny Rocket. He will only be there if you've got the super jetpack, and only give it to you if you're on behalf of Rick.
Rick will only speak to you if you've been pointed to him by the Island CX Survivor. His café will warp you to magic level red if you haven't got a magic level though. I haven't found a way of preventing this, other than having a magic level on beforehand, which you then get to keep.
So if you didn't crash-land for getting the super jetpack, or if no red magic level is an objective, this chain cannot be followed.
For the ManualCX Challenge, it would theoretically be a possibility to try to JSB over the still locked secret passage instead and find the isometric scene exit. But this exit/entrance could not be found yet.
Another theory would be trying to use the other way to travel to Island CX, which is by space shuttle. However the space shuttle will only be available on Otringal near the Palace, after you've been to Island CX before.

200 BraveZeelich Challenge

Status:  Confirmed By: ...

Description: Try to get to Zeelich for the first time, by immediately stealing a shuttle from the Esmer base before you're ever told to do so

Normally you'd steal a shuttle for your second trip, but this time, use it to get there for the first time.

Requirements:
None

Required for:

Skipping magic level Yellow, Green and Red
Progressing further without magic or weapons or items in your inventory, while keeping the ability to finish the game
Being able to take the Emerald Moon trip before the Hacienda trip, to Zeelich

Solution:

It is possible to JSB over the closed gate, that closes off the lower stage of the Temple of Bù.
Doing so will get you into the Esmer base before the gate is opened by the Esmers, which normally happens only after you return from Zeelich. So you can get to Zeelich for the first time using this route in the first place.

Difficulty: :confused2:
Length: Unknown
Type: Achievement
200 ForeignSword Challenge

Status:  Unconfirmed

Description: Get the Emperor's Sword on Twinsun (and finish the game?)

This challenge resembles the ForeignWeapon Challenge (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=418045&postcount=4), but with the sword instead of the Laser. Normally you would aqcuire the sword after your second trip to Zeelich, after which you won't return to Twinsun unless by the final cutscene, but this time, get the sword during your first visit on Zeelich and return to Twinsun instead.

Requirements:

ManualCX Challenge (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=418166&postcount=12) or ReverseTrip Challenge

Required for:

Using the Emperor's sword on Twinsun

Reasoning:

To get the sword, you need to get to Island CX.
The objective is to also be able to take the stolen shuttle trip back to Twinsun. But you only get this option when you're caught after having taken the Hacienda trip to Zeelich.
Having taken the Hacienda trip to Zeelich, Jerome Baldino won't have crash-landed on Otringal yet, so you need to succeed in the ManualCX Challenge to be able to get to Island CX and get the sword.
Without Jerome Baldino, you cannot get the Super Jetpack, which would have solved the Money Monkey bug.
Getting the sword thus requires you to crash-land on Otringal to begin with, which removes the option to steal the shuttle heading for Twinsun.

Difficulty: :confused2:
Length: Unknown

200 Palace Challenge

Status:  Unconfirmed

Description: Try to get into the Palace on Otringal without the Emperor's sword

Usually, you use the sword to kill the Imperial Guards. One of them drops a key, with which you can enter the Palace. But this time, get into the Palace without fighting the Imperial Guards.

Entering the Palave at all would be unnecessary if it were for the Statue Challenge (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=418030&postcount=3).

Requirements:
Unknown

Required for:

Progressing further without weapons or items in your inventory, while keeping the ability to finish the game

Reasoning:

The palace entrance is outside a scene that doesn't have an exitzone. This means it is impossible to reach the entrance without using the key that is dropped by one of the Imperial Guards.
The JSB has been proven to be ineffective aswell, as scenes that don't have an exitzone are effectively infinitly high.

200 FullSpaceSuit Challenge

Status:  Unconfirmed

Description: Try to get off the moon and out of the shuttle while wearing the SpaceSuit

Usually, you use the shuttle to travel to the moon, and take out your suit to exit it. And you put on your suit when you leave the main building, to fly with Jerome Baldino (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=418228&postcount=52) in his spaceship. But by any means, you'll lose the spacesuit after you leave the moon.

Requirements:
Unknown

Required for:

Progressing further with your spacesuit, off moon

Reasoning:

Suppose you succeeded in getting the spacesuit inside the main building (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=418049&postcount=8) on the moon, you still have to get Baldino to trigger the exit from the moon by his spaceship. That is so far the only way out.
The shuttle you came with is only programmed to go TO the moon and not from. So even if you were able to store a second token, and able to insert it after landing, the shuttle will never leave.
Also note that all itinerary tokens are considered by the game as the same object. Entering a room that has a token while already having one from a different place, will make the game think you already have "it" and will not place another one in the scenery.

Description: Try to finish the game by not clearing the storm, but reaching both Green and Red magic levels and taking both trips to Zeelich

Normally you'd clear the storm before you ever go to Zeelich, or even off the first island you start on. It is possible though to leave Citadel Island, go to Zeelich and return to Twinsun, all before you clear the storm. But the trick is to then be able to reach both Green and Magic levels, and return to Zeelich aswell, before you ever clear the storm in the first place.

Requirements:
Unknown

Required for:

Clearing the storm after a visit to Zeelich

Reasoning:

To be able to take the Hacienda trip, you need to finish your wizardry, and therefore need to complete the Dome of the Slate test.
To be able to get there with the Dino-Fly, you need to save Raph for the correct conversation.
After you save him, it is required either to continue to clear the storm with Zoé, or to escape the cutscene, take a Zoé-and-Twinsen flight with Dino-Fly and get rid of her immediately with your car on Desert Island.
The latter will force the cutscene with Zoé again though, after you crash-land back on Citadel Island. This will replace Dino-Fly's destination inquiry by "Have you seen Zoé yet", eventhough she's in your arms, and she doesn't let you get in the house where she's supposed to be.
Consequently, you then won't be able to leave the island anymore or continue with the story (because the Weather Wizard's not at the lighthouse anymore either, now that the Esmers have taken over).
Lastly, avoiding the cutscene with Zoé in the first place is not possible, as the cutscene is unfortunately triggered by entering any adjacent scene to the one you crash-land on.

200 NoWeapons Challenge

Status:  Unconfirmed

Description: Try to finish the game without weapons, Ring of Lightning or Nitro-Meca Pinguins in your inventory

As long as none of those items is in your inventory when you finish, it's allowed. Pinguins can be released before the end, so these shouldn't be a problem. The weapons are more difficult though. We're still not absolutely sure about whether the Wannies Glove is actually a real wepon, as it can only repell enemy projectiles, but it is on the "weapons row".

Having one of the disallowed items in your inventory but not using it, doesn't count.

Requirements:

Statue Challenge (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=418030&postcount=3)

Required for:

Finishing the game without items in your inventory
Reaching places without the required weapons to get there

Reasoning:

To be able to get into Dark Monk's statue without the Statue Challenge (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=418030&postcount=3), you need all key fragments.
The Sups fragment requires entering the palace, which without the Palace Challenge (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=418182&postcount=17) requires the Emperor's Sword. This is definitly a weapon.
Not even thinking about how to survive the rooms of the statue without the Emperor's Sword.

200 NoItems Challenge

Status:  Unconfirmed

Description: Try to finish the game without any items in your inventory

Any item that can be removed from the inventory is allowed, as long as it is out when you finish.

Having one of the disallowed items in your inventory but not using it, doesn't count.

Requirements:

NoWeapons Challenge (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=418258&postcount=24)

Required for:
None

Reasoning:

To be able to reach Dark Monk's statue without any items, you should first be able to reach it without any weapons.
You also cannot have a translator, which is at least given by Jerome when you free him on Emerald Moon, so you cannot free him from his cell.
Not having a Super Jetpack, Magic ball or Ring of Dissidents, will also trigger the Money Monkey bug (dead-end).

200 NoMagic Challenge

Status:  Unconfirmed

Description: Try to finish the game without reaching any magic level at all

Not getting your Tunic, Wizards Diploma, Sendell's Ball or any of the four Key Fragments, doesn't necessarily mean you haven't reached any magic level. There are some (random) places where your magic level warps to Red or Fire, so these should be avoided as well.

Having none of the disallowed items in your inventory is therefor no proof, only a missing magic bar meter.

Requirements:

Statue Challenge (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=418030&postcount=3)?

Required for:
None

Reasoning:

It might be possible by proving the Statue Challenge first, because Dark Monk's key will yield magic level Fire.
And at some point, the route to Island CX for getting the Sword and the fragments, will warp you into Red magic level at Rick's café.
There may be other ways to prove this challenge though.

200 Overkill Challenge

Status:  Unconfirmed

Description: Try to kill The Tralü (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=418078&postcount=17) with the Emperor's Sword.

Normally you would kill the monster to be able to clear the storm, before you aqcuire the sword during your second trip to Zeelich. After that you won't return to Twinsun unless by the final cutscene. But this time, get the sword during your first visit on Zeelich before you clear the storm and return to Twinsun instead. Then kill that nasty monster with the mighty sword!

Requirements:

ForeignSword Challenge (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=418177&postcount=14)
FullZeelichB4Storm Challenge (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=418257&postcount=23)?

Required for:
None

Reasoning:

To kill the Tralü with the sword, you need to get the sword on Twinsun first, so follow the reasoning behind the ForeignSword Challenge first.
To be able to get to the monster in the first place, you shouldn't clear the storm before you go to Zeelich for the sword.

200 ReverseTrip Challenge

Description: Try to finish the game by going on a spacetrip from the Esmer base and get back, before you go on the trip from the Hacienda.

Normally you would go to and return from Zeelich by the Hacienda trip, and then return to Zeelich by going on a spaceship from the Esmer base. The other way around, if it were possible, might mean certain things you do can be done only afterwards, changing the order of chronology.

Requirements:
Unknown

Required for:
None

Reasoning:

No effective continuation is found after a certain point yet.
After you crash-land on Otringal with Baldino, if that is your first visit, the trigger to be captured and the assignment of stealing a shuttle will be removed by the game.
The game thinks you're visiting Zeelich for the second time after the crash-land, and either the stealable shuttle will be gone or you won't find Joe the Elf (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=418262&postcount=58) in the tunnel where you'd normally get captured.
Getting hold of an itinerary token from elsewhere is therefore useless.
Even if this were somehow possible, the Hacienda trip wont be available after you crash-land back on Twinsun, as the esmer take-over will probably remove the Esmer that invites you to Zeelich aswell, just like the Weather Wizard is removed in the FullZeelichB4Storm Challenge (http://forum.magicball.net/showpost.php?p=418257&postcount=23).
