Space Elevator's are wonderfull, as they are not only a fantasic littaral concept, but a great metaphor for raiseing humanity to a new level of development.
Something thats really hard to achieve, but once you have done it, it makes some things orders of magnatude easier then before.
(personaly I see the rise of an Augmented Reality Network a metaphorical space elivator).

With a counter-balance system solar panels should be enough to move it up and down. (powered from the top).

Yeah, I've also been thinking of counter balance, we would have a system of to tapes next to each other, each system would be closed around 4 pulleys, two on the ground and two on the station, each system would have two elevators, one would counter balance the other when climbing. The countrer balance would be exchanged between the two tape systems on the space station. Instead installing the engine on the platform, we could minimize it's weight just by moving the elevators up and down by pulling the tapes with relative ease, thanks to the counter balance "falling" to earth.

Yes, a counter balance system makes the most sense, then you only have to pull the wait of what your lifting, and not the list itself.

Still, I think what we need is an "in between" development, going straight to a SE is quite a massive step. If there was an in-between idea that developed the same technologys, but returned investiment sooner, then we would stand more chance of getting there.

I didnt think colour LCD's could let in that much light though, seems most likely though.

Well, it seems to have the ability to block a varing amount of light.
Oleds are great because they can emit light without being backlite, but on their own they cant block light.

What gets me is the demo seemed to both controll the light colour as well as blocking it off.
Maybe a combination of LCDs + OLDs, or LCDs + projector/softtorchs.

When they zoom in, you can see that it's some sort of foil on the window, you can see it's boundaries in the corners.

normal LCD-folies don't have colors they just can block the light
I also think that there are some lamps on every side of the window because you can see that she moves the lights up and down but notfrom left to right ;)

About that cell phone thing: I've never been a fan of cell phones. Some people have forgotten already, but cell phones emit dangerous radiation which can easily give you brain cancer if you're exposed to it too much. That's why I only use them when it's necessary (talking, sms'ing).

And it's never been prooven. Anyway, in the overwhelming radiation-filled world of the modern times, I think people become more immune to it, children to age 7 develop radiation immunity - to some extent, I guess evolution will somehow do the rest.

Besides, what can you do, other then talking or sending text msgs, that will send a signal from the phone and make it emit waves??

Yeah maybe you're right. Still, radiation is invisible and it gives me the creeps.
