That is some very cool shit man... its realy nice what people managed to do with the Kinect... I've seen a lot of other projects that use it, and they are all amazing. Who would have thought something created for gaming would be able to change things like that?

Yes, its wonderfull.
Console gaming with the Kinect and Wiimote before it pushed a lot of the prices of components down. All this stuff was possible before but for crazy prices.
Since then gyroscopes have got small and cheap, and depth camera's commonplace.
Software is all thats holding some back. *glares at his leapmotion*

I have posted this before a little but after becoming aware of just how awesome it was, I never posted more.

As many of you know, I have a 3D Printer. I am pleased with it, and used it to make all sorts of 3D prints.
It cost over 1300 euros, and all its pieces look like this;

However, now some folks have come up with a 3D printer that looks like;

wtf.! Thats it. Thats the printer.
Heres part of how it works;


The software we wrote as an add on to blender takes the data from that 3D model and translates it into an audio waveform. It then plays the audio file out to the printer through the headphone jack in your computer. This waveform drives a pair of electro magnetic mirrors. The higher the volume, the higher the voltage, the more the mirrors move. The purpose of these mirrors is to reflect and control the path of the laser beam. By using the audio waveform generated from the 3D model data to drive the mirrors, we are able to get the laser beam to draw out the shape of the object. That's takes care of the X and Y axes.

"the $100 3D Printer". Yes, thats right, it costs $100 or so. But I only just realized how much of a awesome hack this thing is.

There I am with my giant spinning wheel of a tv, and someone has just invented the cathode ray tube.

Someone has looked at a laser and a pair of earphones and made a 3d printer.

The other details are pretty cool too. I like the suggestion someone had to attach it to a record player and thus make a complete analogue 3d print.

Its more like a pool of resin and the lazer sets the material solid. So in some ways its the opposite of how mine works. Mine melts plastic, this one solidifies it.

Well, I don't remotely trust io9 in general, but the previous research they talk about I have definitely seen from other sources.

I am also aware that the brain is insanely adaptable to inputs. Much earlier (5 years? probably more) there was a brain implant that allowed a blind person to see out of a very low res webcam. The implant put electrodes in vaguely the right place of the brain for visual input and clamped them there....and the brain itself learnt how to interpret the signals. The hard part for the team was not getting the brain to understand the electrical signals, it was getting the connection in a fixed position safely (because brains move about slightly).
So, given that was quite a few years ago, this certainly seems very plausible now.

This is... amazing. I'm speechless about it. I didn't know our biotechnology was already that far! How have we invented something like that already, but not fully developed a cure for diseases such as AIDS or câncers?
Also, this is a rare situation, because I'm proud to say (only in this moment and for this situation) that I live in Brazil :)

Well, I guess because the brain itself does a lot of the work here.
Also, its worth remembering "cancer" is a term for shitloads of different yet similar things. In someways its a catch-all term for "body goes wrong and decides to grow stuff it shouldn't". So coming up with a cure for all its types is pretty hard. Still, there are some pretty cool treatments on the horizon.I read about drugs that are like chemotherapy, but in "smart" capsules that only release at the exact point of the tumour - thus they can be a lot stronger without poisoning the person.

Controlled acoustic levitation. They make a few different things float using sound waves.

They even visualize sound-waves by using dry ice.

Wait! So, from what I understood, they are creating "strands of sound" (made with accoustic vibrations) that can then be controlled by intensitiy/pitch to levitate something? But isn't that like, giving form to sound? That's simply nuts. How did they manage to do that?!

After reading some articles regarding the subject, I kinda understood why they can move the object sideways when using this technique (to resume it, sound waves also have energy which, when directed to a certain point, with a certain intensity, will create pressure on it, thus moving some molecules of air closer or farther from each other,, making it possible to manipulate the position of whatever object you have that is nearby those molecules), but isn't that like distorting space? Moving molecules like that must take a shit lot of energy, enough to make you deaf if you hear the sound waves for too long...

It is distording the air, not space. Air molecules are further away from one another than the molecules of something solid or liquid, so it's easy to squeeze them or pull them apart.

Its metaphorically like distorting space I guess.
I think its somewhat related to how airplanes fly; They create high pressure below their wings, low above, creating a lift upwards.
I guess this uses sound to achieve the same thing.
