I suppose you could separate up the different terrains with bounding volumes and then just set the sound when the player enters and exits them then you won't need to check against the mesh either...

Similar problem

I've had a similar problem. I might be wrong in making this assumption but I think the sound files are being loaded by LBA in the wrong way when they are called. This is merely speculation however....
