Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Hello MBN! It's been a while.

Has anyone been playing the new Zelda? I couldn't see a discussion about it here other than a few posts from before it had come out.

Needless to say, I got it for the Wii-U and have been playing it too much. It is an exceptional game. I do love it, but as all it has been getting is gushing praise (other than one or two nutty 6/7 out of ten reviews) I wanted to share some negatives to see if anyone felt the same way...
For a start, the frame rate in towns and during other periods drops atrociously on the Wii U. I'm not obsessed with games having perfect frame rates, but this is a real immersion-breaker for me. Another thing that similarly breaks the flow but is a design issue is the inventory management and the way health is replenished. A simple solution to what I thought of before would be the ability to map a hot key (or hot key combination since all keys are used up) to any kind of food you want. I really enjoy cooking in the game and also appreciate being able to decide carefully what meals to use before or in battle, but at the same time it'd be good if I also had the option to just hit a key to get Link to munch on one of my million apples (or whatever variety of foodstuffs you want) in the heat of the moment. Or I wonder (though I'm far less sure of this) if having some 'dual health' system could work (i.e a mix between eating and gradual regeneration or instant boosts from fallen objects like in Zeldas past.) Either way, opening the inventory as often as I have to seems to break the immersion and tension a bit. Unless I've missed something obvious here...As someone who actually enjoyed the Wii U, I do feel sad that the gamepad isn't used for all of this and obviously there are going to be 'leftovers' (for want of a better word) from the game's origin on that console. But I understand Nintendo's decision to not make it seem 'superior' to its elder version on the Switch and am thankful I got the game on the now-abandoned machine at all.

I must admit I'm also finding the enemy A.I fiercely dumb in many ways (but surprising and enjoyable in others). I know these creatures are meant to to be a bit brutish and dumb, but considering I *found* certain enemies up ladders in the first place it's ridiculous once I take one out or knock them off they can't come back up after me when I've taken their position over. Instead hordes of them crowd around the elevated platform throwing stones, most of which can't get to me because of my position. But still they keep throwing. Not so thrilling - and only extremely challenging because of the amount of hearts they knock off with one hit should I ventutute down. I swear even in the Wind Waker enemies could climb up and down ladders after you, unless I'm misremembering that. I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet...

What does the MBN make of the game?

I really enjoyed the open world aspect of BOTW, because it wasn't the static type open world you'd normally see in games like Skyrim. Being able to sort of "choose" your own path when playing the game made it feel more like a real adventure, rather than a forced one. I also really liked the impressive world they created, and the possibility to explore every last inch of it.

The game performance is certainly bad in some places. At the worst of times it felt bearable, but still very poor. I expect this to be the limitation of having the game on a console like the Wii U. And I think it's a worthy sacrifice for having it made available on both of the consoles, rather than just one of them. This honestly isn't that big of an issue for me, but i could see why it is for certain people.

If there was any issues for me, it would have to be surrounding the shrines throughout the game. This could be because I'm not much of a puzzle guy, but i felt like there was way too many of them. You could say "fine, just skip them" which would be perfectly fine, until you find out you need to do a hundred of them just to get some decent heart upgrades. Without these upgrades, you might as well be playing Legend of Zelda: Dark Souls. The game is ruthless.

Heres another issue i had with the game. Why does the weapons keep breaking every single time? I don't know if it's because I'm more ahead of the game than i should be. With the game being so open It's sometimes hard for me to know. But why even have this durability system to begin with? I'm perfectly capable of dispensing old weapons when i have to, no need to destroy them for me.

So there is a durability system... I had trouble believing it... Most of the time those are used in MMORPG to fight off inflation, but why would you need it in a single-player game ?

I haven't played the game yet, and I'm afraid I won't be for a while, since Nintendo has this habit of making multiple versions of the same console

For all i know it could be a way to counteract people from getting a really good weapon early on, and just using that for the remainder of the play through. The game is very open after all, so that's probably possible.
Whatever the case may be, i still feel like the weapons break way too quickly. To the point where i have no weapons to use at all.

Manage to get my hands on the game and been playing for few hours now.
The performance is indeed noticeable, even on switch, so hope updates will improve it later.

This is my first time actually playing Zelda, tried others for few hours only but never manage to play them for good.
I can say I am enjoying the game a lot. Usually I get tired of this open world endless games, so hope this won't be the case.
The gameplay seems endless with always a lot of surprises.
If you browse few things on youtube, you always learn something new about the gameplay.

I actually thought about creating such thread, because I guess we can still compare this game with LBA.
I'd love to see an LBA with so vast gameplay with so much effort/detail put into it.
Actually seen an open world LBA won't be a bad idea at all.

Still have plenty hours to pley the game as I'm in early stages so I may be able to give a better input on a later stage.

Thanks for the discussion - some interesting perspectives. On some other forums it seems issues one might have with this (otherwise excellent) game can't be discussed without fans getting extremely aggressive and defensive. Strange phenomenon!

I remember when I first played LBA2 I found it extremely 'open' and free - even more so even than OoT which came a year or so later, believe it or not. I recently read someone else mention LBA2 on an online discussion as a reason they had found the following Zeldas slightly underwhelming, which made me realise I wasn't alone in this somewhat niche opinion (also, it's always a nice surprise to see the LBA series mentioned outside this place or other expected quarters...!) It would indeed indeed be beautiful to see a new LBA game on the scale of BotW. 'Outcast' is another one that has an amazing sense of scale that too few people have heard about...
