Armistice Day 11-11-18 11:00
![]() At the blowing of the wind and in the decay of autumn; in the chill of winter, and the promise of spring under the blue sky and in the warmth of summer we remember them. At the dawn of day and at the setting of the sun we remember them. With joys we long to share and with sorrows we bear alone in work we have to do and life we have to live we remember them. With thankfulness and regrets, with memories of the past and hopes for the future, for all that was and all that might have been we remember them. I hope we can all reflect on the price of conflict and all earnestly hope for a more peaceful world Last edited by the_angry_; 2004-11-11 at 17:27. |

We remember them, indeed.
You know today, I must have shouted at at least 5 of my good mates for not donating/wearing a poppy. If those people who died for our freedom could sacrifice their lives, I find it almost sinful that so many of us cannot sacrifice a bit of money for a poppy. I hope you all wore one today.

Interestingly no. I never saw ANY this year - I wonder if they didn't sell any for fear of being sued by people pricking themselves with the pins (traumatic I know) Half the people in my office talked through it too!!! I was most upset - especially when the world is in the state it is now

We aren't celebrating. We are remebering all the soldiers who gave their lives for freedom during the Great War. Today is Armistice Day (as you probably know.) and in this country we wear poppies on our blazers/shirts/jackets for most of the month as a sign of remembrance and respect for the dead. Also, we had a two minutes silence at the 11th hour, also as a mak of remembrance.

Oh I see. The Great War, is that WW2? I had no idea that it was Armistice Day and I don't know what it is. But I can look that up. An explanation when you start a thread about something like this is always fine, though.

Armistice Day, was the 11th November 1918, when the Armistice (end of the war) was signed, at the 11th hour. Do they not make a big deal out of it anywhere else in Europe?

Well, World War I wasn't really on the scale of WWII in terms of countries involved. So for some countries it probably isn't much of a big deal, due to their lack of involvment. Horrific war though.
I'm actually considering studying History around the WWI era at Uni. And I wore my poppy with pride. |

But we haven't been very neutral, especially not in the WW2.
