PSP can make greyscale bitmap files.

White = High points
Black = Lowpoints
Grey = Inbetween

Exactly like the landscape editer in Bryce

DBP can load these bmp files and make a landscape from them.

No, it is a full programming langerage, designed to easily make 3D games with.
As its a langerage, you can make any type of game with it, and can compile the game to a *.exe file which can be run on anyones machine.
The style of the code is exactly like BASIC, and thus is very easy to code in.

Its about £50.
http://darkbasicpro.thegamecreators.com/

oh, and you can sale anything you make on it.
(unlike the Gamesfactory, or most Rapid development things)

*.3ds and *.x are the only 3D formats unfortantly.
Its not too good with textures on them either.
(x file with panda export is the only one i found to keep the mapping perfectly)
--
Theres a trail version of Dark Basic, but not the Pro version.
(the pro version is so vastely better its like a different bit of software)

Right while I have been waiting (and still waiting) for DrakBASIC I have come up with some ideas for LBA Online feel free to add some

LBA Online Ideas

-Player Owned housing (if possible)
-Moveable furniture?
-Buy new/used furniture
-Vehicles
-Bus routes?
-maybe trains?
-Transport to other Planets
-Music
-SpaceGuitarKid's music "ufo DrInK"

-Item trading
-Quests - Obviously
-Player Vs Player
-Buddy List
-Player PMing (private messaging)
-Player owned shops (if possible)
-Select the different races to play as from the LBA World
-Travel to other Planets e.g. Zeelich
-Different races start in different places e.g. Esmurs - Zeelich, Quechs - Twinsen, etc

P.S. Darkflame I think you should be the official adviser for LBA Online

Well, i got tones of ideas, and i'll help when i can...but the RMP is still my number 1 project...and i barely have time for that

My ideas/views:

Player housing

...hmz...maybe...but it might not be worth the effort.

Purhapes the player has a home "island" but its seperate from the game.
They can personalise it, and it could even act as a kinda of portal into the game.
Animal-Crossing like features for the house will be cool. Certainly!

However, having it seperate from the main landscape would save you *a lot* of problems and pains in development.
My idea of the player house would almost be like an interface when you load up:
You can wonder around the house.
Clocks, Callenders, Minigames, a "walkie-talki" room, personalised wall paper/furnature, would all feature.

There would also be a "portal" room.
This would contain magic warps to the main islands.
You start with just a link to citadle, but you could get other short-cuts later.
Its though this room you access the MMORPG part of the game.

There should also be a "warp to last location" portal, so people can go to the island they were on last, where they were on last.

Im sure you can see how this player house would work.

I really wouldnt recomend you have house's on the landscape though....very few professional MMORPGs have successfully done it. And it would become a pain to expand it constantly for more house's.

-Vehicles

Certainly, my warp/portal idea would be only from going to and from your house, and other certain locations you have already been too by other means.

I wouldnt go for tradiational transport though.

Bus's?

Ok, but keep it LBA style.
Like, you could have a long, flat scoter like vechiles lots of people can get on
(no roof or sides to it, just a base with wheels, and simple seats)

Trains....no...i dont think thats LBAish.

How about air-ships?
How air ballon type things?
Gliders?

Naturaly, wizards could get you from A to B in some case's too.

This is LBA, think of fun ideas!

How about a giant death-slide linking two islands that are close to eachover?

Music:

Yes, pack it with fan music! theres lots about.

-Item trading
-Quests - Obviously
-Player Vs Player
-Buddy List
-Player PMing (private messaging)

Yes, all of them ;D
I think the community aspex has to be #1.
If nesscery, make it chat program first, game second

-Select the different races to play as from the LBA World

Yes, good idea.
Include the alien race's too, of course

-Player owned shops (if possible)

hmz...could be tricky..depends how you want to do it.
An easy way would be if their was a fixed number of shops in the game, but players could by shares in them
This way, they could earn money even when they are offline.
(obviously, this has to be carefull balanced)

Remember, players will be saleing/trading items anyway, so they dont need a physical shop to own.

Other ideas:

*Notice boards.
For a price (a few kashs) players can stick an advert on a few notice boards in the game.
different size's will be different prices.

This would be good for those trading/saleing stuff, they could have a sign to inform people.
These would be best near shopping areas.

Of course, players might also use these to shout about something.
(""Farscape rules!!", "ITS MY BIRTHDAY!!!!" ect ect)

*Post boxs/mail system.
You can send letters to people.

Pretty pointless, but a nice adition IMO.
(giving people birthday cards, or such)

It should cost money to post stuff (stop people spamming eachover too much...and also stop the load on the system.
How are these messages going to be stored till the recieving player logs in? You gota think of this stuff!)

*Major charecters:
All the main charecters, IMO, should be NPC's in it.
You should be able to meat twinsen...maybe he is too lazy so he gets you to do a quest.
Maybe he nicked some money of yours you so carefull placed in the garbage earlier.

No Mining/Digging/Resource collecting.
Lots of mmorpgs have these, but imho LBAo shouldnt.
It will make your task even harder, and only makes the game boring.

Quests should be the focus of the game, and also minigames.
Stuff that can be repeated is always good.

I recently played GoldenSun2..theres a bit in it where you race though a few rooms of puzzles while an NCP does the same.
Wouldnt bit be great to have something simerlar in LBAo, except your racing against another player? Increase replay value if theirs multiple player quests.

Tides
There is no nightime on Twinsen, but there is a moon so their is tides.
Purhapes some locations or islands can only be reached at certain times?
This happens on earth in a few places, so why not twinsun.

GOLDEN SUN 2 RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

anyway yeah ur ideas are cool i'll include them when i learn DarkBasic

"No Mining/Digging/Resource collecting."

I agree this makes the game so much more like real life (like a chore)

Your housing idea seems good (a bit like Star Wars Galaxies) we'll use it

The mailing systems an excellent idea!

Trains - I haven't played LBA for a while but I ment (well thats my excuse) like the transport guy on the scooter

Player owned shops - a player could visit another players island kinda thing

Tides - Excellent Idea!

I hope DBP can handle all of this

oh sure, thats fine, just no:

DBP *can* handel it, but some of it will be very hard to do.
My advice is figure out how the basic online system will work before doing fancy stuff.

(ie,
1.Make an empty landscape with a charecter walking around.
2.Make 2 charecters walking around the same landscape controlled by people
on different machines
3.Figure out how a sever system will work when you have, say, 30 people....
4. Then make the game itself
5. dont worry about graphics, they can be improved later)

I can help you with 1, but my knowledge of DBP and online systems is nothing, i just know its got IP communications so its possible.
You'll have to work it out yourself, good luck

I was just wondering if some news for LBA Online was really important (for example a demo) would I be able to post it on the main page of the MBN?

Consider yourself an official member Mr Sound Engineer!

at the moment we don't need sound we need ideas so I guess you can help with that, also we might not need textures because of Tempusr's texture packs he released although we could always do with some more.

P.S. Can we use some of ur other LBA fan songs that you have made?

If you make a demo, and its really good, then im sure it will be posted on MBN.
However, you would have to contact Axx when ready, as he is in charge of all news.

There wont be a main character, 'cos you make your own character and travel round the LBA worlds doing quests (maybe a quest from twinsen or zoe or someone else)

P.S. Pipe Trick?

hmmmmmmmmm..........I'm thinking how about we let thingy play it and find a "Pipe Trick" himself. LOL I've never stumbled upon that thread before, I might reinstall LBA2 and try and se if it works, you never know

P.S. Work will begin when I manage to get all the software meanwhile I'm checking out a few mmorpg's at the moment, head over too Project summit or other

EDIT: I found a 3D engine (Quake3 style) but i dont know weather its capable of doing what we're doing here's the link anyway, I think we should stick with darbasic and a decent map editor thingy

i think you should just make the game with dbp and thats it. This project is taking too long to start.

but youre the project leader so, mark and move

It will take a long time to learn DBP, but i think its the best option.
dont rush Hobmoblin, as this is a very ambitious project and has to be done in small steps

I already have the online protocals worked out,i just need to program them into app extensions, as for the 3d model formats, u can convert them to a native DBP format, and ive used milkshape3d and it exports textures fine.(as long as they are in the directory)

I know we had hearts set on an MMORPG but i think we are gonna have to setlle for a network RPG, meaning sector based areas...im losing servers left and right...but i can still get the server side hosting done...i just need to figure out how to work the headers so that the DLLs work with DBP...um and...i dont rele know what else...DBP isnt rele that hard...
