Brin and the other dude seem like pretty easy going people with a concern for real world problems. Good to see someone like them own a billion dollar empire.

First he studied at Chalmers then he took a student exchange program to Chicago Illinois.

He choose Microsoft instead of Google.

Fool.
Im sure microsoft pays more, but Google just looks a so much nicer working atmosphere.

Bloody smart company too, its not all "being nice" being nice, because "being nice" seems to increase their creative output as well as getting them some of the most skillfull coders on the planet.

Also, their famous 20% rule.
On the one hand, its free time to work on stuff employies find is interesting. (makes employies happy).
On the other hand, Google gets a huge number of very original, revolutionary, web products. (makes google rich).

Id absolutely love to work for Google, purely because of that 20%.
To have the creative freedom, yet a compeditive enviroment filled with a lot of resources and skilll, is a perfect atmosphere for innovation.

Indeed.
Sometimes things slip out in interviews and such too.
They sometimes mention stuff like "making the world better".
And "making all knowledge avaible to every human on earth"

Its clear they see themselfs as, in the future, more then just a mere search engine.

And their slogan: "Google's mission is to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful."

...which can easily be turned into this: "Google's mission is to control and organize the world's information and make selected parts of it universally accessible and useful."

And of course, there's the Google Spiders.

Well, I think it was that Microsoft was closer to work, or something like that.

Theres real no profit in limiting information.
Google makes money by displaying adverts and being the best at getting people the answeres. (so they see the adverts).

Of course, some people think they are giving too much information away. (eg, the whole book/copywrite debate. Is letting people read a few pages...but any few pages...."fair use" ?)

Either way, I honestly think googles founders in some ways consider themselfs to be saving the world.

Exactly like the Hanso foundation.

Knowledge is power - that's what Google is after.

Just imagine, they actually are in the way of controlling the world's information. Gmail, Google Calendar, database of what people are searching for in all areas, should I continue?
This is no joke.

But the point is they're NOT abusing it, if they were going to, they would've done it already.

and how much people could sue if they did do anything with the information they hold? Quite a lot.

Not all profit comes in monetary form.

And CF is on the money with this one.

Also, having just watched the YouTube clip, I have one question. How on earth can they afford to do all of that? Seriously, how the hell is all of that sustainable on a long term basis? Google can't be making that much money, can they?

I'm glad there's someone who agrees with me. I already tried to have this discussion once (in another forum) and everyone just called me paranoid...

I'm in the same boat as you, except I never really made a point about it as I thought I'd get the same reaction. Without wanting to sound like some kind of conspiracy nut, all I'm saying is that I don't really like the sound of any private business saying that they want to organise all of the world's information.

I'm also somewhat bemused at the high opinion that Google is held in compared to similar companies. Especially since they went directly against their mission statement of making information "universally accessible" when they built the Chinese version of their search engine.

In fact, if they only choose to, they can rumble through people's Gmails and Celendars, and areas of interests, and what-not, without worrying about anyone finding out.
So here I am risking sounding like an idiot: People of the planet earth - stop being blind!
