Cuff & Link

ok here it goes ... since I've had the luck (or not ... remains to see ) to join the Faculty of Electronics, Information Technology and Telecomunications, I've been assigned to make a small educational project, be it an application or a game, etc. in which I must show some capabilities of doing something and also teaching while doing it If that sounds confusing, well in short, my project must be fun and educational, meaning that I must teach others something while they look at how it was done ... so here I am, starting a new project called "Cuff'n Link" ... it's a game of course (cause I would never program an app ) and I hope it will be fun, simple to understand and also useful. With it I plan on making a small tutorial regarding game logic, physics, interactions, triggers, events and such ... it's all supposed to be VERY basic so I won't mess around doing complicated stuff cause well I don't need to and I hate doing that If u want a glimpse at things to come, here's a small introduction and of course, a demo (cause I hate people announcing projects with no clear "evidence" )

Story (or more of a small description)

- the game will be revolving around the 2 central characters, Cuff and Link ... as u'll soon see, Link is the (blue) jelly which indicates he's the boy and Cuff is the (pink'ish) jelly which indicates she's a ... well ... female now the game will evolve like this: Link will travel through some "Worlds" composed of many "Levels" so that at the end he'll rescue Cuff pretty much like Super Mario as u'll see in the small demo

FAQ

- Did you ... ???
- no, I did NOT copy no sprites, tiles, sounds, etc. from nobody ... as u can see they are VERY simple and I enjoy making games like this

- Could u please make the graphics cooler ??? I really think the game would rock that way !!!
- NO !!! I wanna have fun making this game, concentrate on the gameplay, I want it to have a cartoonish feeling and I don't wanna hurt my eyes and waste my time doing "cool" pixel arts stuff ... if making a game makes u dizzy then u shouldn't make it, right ???

- Could u please expand it in the future and add more stuff like levels, enemies, traps, etc ???
- Well if anybody is willing to create the ideas and sprites, I'd be more than delighted

Note: Now u will see that this is a VEERRYYY simple demo (just started working a couple of days ago) and there are still no enemies, traps, etc. so be patient, all in good time

and well THE DEMO !!! (1.5 Mb)

Mirror by SebZ:
XP - http://sebkaz.com.au/mbn/cuff_n_link.exe
Vista - http://sebkaz.com.au/mbn/cuff_n_link_vista.exe

Ahh and of course, I expect some bug detections if u're willing to thanks !!!

Why do you use that retarded host, no one is gonna try to download a file which is impossible to download unless you remove the very last of your dignity.

btw what happend to yousendit, wasn't it the most popular host before?

I usually wouldn't have a go at someone picking a bad host, but since I know you can use a computer I see no reason to pick such a annoying file-hosting webplace.

Ok, I always use my Google-pages.

And I can't re upload cause I can't download your file (I seriously have no idea how to download from the current host)

And I won't since I see no reason why when it's your project -.-

I can mirror it on my server...
I'll download it and host it - but not right now... We've been pulled back. I'll get it up Monday.

I really like the graphics!

An idea is perhaps to have implemented a free fall, instead of falling with a constant velocity.

LBAWinOwns: well if I wouldn't limit the speed, it would get too fast and look weird trust me, all platformers have falling speed limits also try and play a FPS and jump off a cliff or a building u'll see that after the first half of the entire fall, you won't gradually go faster, but instead, fall with a constant speed anyway thanks a lot for the feedback !!! and Jasiek, thanks for the mirrors SebZ, u could upload it on to your server but only when it's finished cause now I'll release many many new updates so it isn't of much use thanks a lot for the offer and btw: any bugs ?

well :P this is more or less what i got out of it after starting it up.
Confusion for some god forsaken reason - the game started in some sort of frozen condition ^^ it wasent untill i hammered around on random buttons to make something happen (and hit the d button i think it was) that the game decided to start

from there it was working fairly well ^^ jump here, bounce there and go up to the buddy at the top of the hill.
If anything else is supposed to happen from there :P it diddent.
^^ so perhaps some sort of "What button does what", even in the form of a readme :P would proberbly be a good idea.

hmm ignore the D and S buttons ... they are for debugging purposes and they will make your game crash ... also as a debug button, there's a temporary R button but you only have the arrow keys as the actual buttons so just stick with those and about the weird thing at the start with the frozen screen, it should not have done that so it's just a one time problem I think ... shouldn't happen again check please

No, it's cool. I'll host each version for you. I have 1GB of space and 10GB of transfer per month and I'm using a maximum of 50mb a month... The highest was 300mb and that was when I hosted Dan's program - 3 months ago. This past month was 10mb...

Edit: It's only 535kb so I've downloaded it and uploaded it.
Just send me an email ( [email address] ) with the new version and I'll upload it as soon as I can.

Anyway... Ta-da! Here it is. Cuff 'n' Link

It's simple, nice, and very good if it's a few days work. What's the purple bobble at the beginning which lets you jump higher? Looks like the figure on the right, just with eyes closed.

The jump mechanics are a bit too tolerant, it's nearly impossible to die in this game when you don't jump off the cliff to the left because even if there's only one pixel on the platform he doesn't fall down. You should change the collision so that it doesn't take his upper "body" into account, only the part which touches the ground.

When you die, nothing happens. Is that correct?

yep when u die, nothing happens ... and well think of this: if I make the collision detect all pixels perfectly, then u would "slide" along the corners cause u can see the jelly is round ... also the bobble which lets u jump higher is gray ... how did u see it purple ??? I'm confused now

now I really am confused the gray one has its eyes closed and lets u jump higher while the pink one has her eyes open and doesn't do a thing

Yes but I thought they looked similar.

/Reminds me of another grey/purple dispute we had yesterday. I was accused of color-blindness then.

:P good point. in order to make it possible for colorblind people to differentiate :P perhaps something other than closed eyes could be used to identify a jumping blob

Yes but i was thinking more in terms of colorblinds ^^ now i dont know if you are colorblind, but there are also various degree's and differences between colorblind people so just because 1 can see it dosent mean all can. Phew.
