The wonders of Facebook

Seriously, Facebook is amazing. Anyone who says it's not has no idea what they're talking about.

Did you try the "6 degrees of separation" feature? It's fucking amazing. You choose whatever person in the world who has Facebook, doesn't matter if you know them or not, and Facebook finds (according to friends list) your connection to the person through 6 (6!) people. 6 Degrees of Separation used to be a theory, but I'd like to see anyone calling it a "theory" now. I'm connected to everyone... and I don't even have that many friends on Facebook. I guess this feature could be lying, but I choose to believe it's true.

Random example:

Besides that, got any Facebook stories/something?

Well, if it goes just by friends lists I know that a lot of semi-famous people on FB just friend everyone who asks (up to the 5000 limit), so the person connecting you to whoever it is might not actually know them any better than you.

Granted, it might be a neat tool for figuring out how you know someone who sent you a friend request, but just looking at mutual friends usually suffices for that.

Facebook is something, yeah.

I'm just starting with it, but it looks promising.

Loved the pics feature. It's not anything new if you know what a photolog is...but Facebook do it simpler and cleaner(Plus, you could post your name in the picture and it won't come out until you pass the cursor over the hot spot)

It's cool the chat option. Very unexpected.

See you there guys!

:P

Actually, not a facebook example - it turns out I'm at 4 degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon.

First you need to add the socialprofile application.
6 degrees feature: http://apps.facebook.com/socialprofile/?uid= (Add wanted facebook userid after ?uid=)
Then click the "via" link (with the 2 blue cycle arrows), then (if no quick connection found) click "6 degrees".

It's not just famous people, I just entered a random number at UID and IT FOUND A CONNECTION! crazy!

Yeah just put some random numbers in, it does seem to work.
Although I get a lot of bugs with that application, names not displaying etc.

On a side note, what do people think of the new facebook layout?

A very similar function already exists at I Beat Garry (Garry Kasprov, the former world chess champion).

You can type any chess players name, and it will calculate who you've beaten and who he have beaten _ and who he have beaten _ and who he have beaten that have beaten Garry Kasparov.

Facebook is definitely full of features. But I'm too careful to use it, I don't want to risk that my future employer know how well I scored at "How manly/smart/popular are you?"-tests.

I basically only signed up for seeing/uploading pictures of a particular group.

The thing about facebook is that they own your pictures when you've uploaded them,
read the agreement

Yep, it's all there.

Thats actualy legaly speaking, completely untenable and probably wouldnt hold up if push came to shove.
A simple counter example is if I upload a picture copywrited to someone else.
It dosnt magicaly become theirs simply because they say so. Regardless of "me" agreeing to the policy, it would have to be every person on earth agreeing for that to work.

But you're only allowed to upload pictures which you personally have the copyright for.
And if you own it and then agree to their terms, then they own it.
That's their logic I suppose.

Yes, but what if you dont own it?
Just because you broke the rules, dosnt give them right over a 3rd partys property does it?
Two wrongs dont make a right, and all that.

Theres many things you could also have the right to use and distribute, but they wouldnt be yours to own.

I think that the producer of the work retains the copyright unless they are in the employ of someone else at the time they produce it. I guess it's to protect themselves but it sounds like legal bullshit to me

Well, what they want to ensure is they have fall rights to display or use information you post. Dosnt mean they need to "own" it.

Btw, I just noticed there's an actual Facebook application called "six degrees". Hmm, it appears to suck... it only finds users who also installed that app, and the search is really slow. Just use the instructions I posted instead.

There's also a group on the experiment, it's pretty large but it won't have everyone in facebook on it!

Its hardly an expirement that group, its more like "hay lets get everyone in a single group!".
To do a 6 degree's "test", you need to challange person A to find person B without person A having any direct knowledge of B. Only clues they can pass on too friends, to pass onto other friends, till hopefully they are found.

This thread started praising Facebook, but now it degenerates into a anti-FC thing.

nah, was just critising some of the groups you get on facebook.
Facebook itself is a fairly well made site.

I just noticed that I love the gossip magazine style of facebook's entry page .

Example:

"XXX and YYY are now officially in a relationship.

<PICTURE>
XXX and YYY."

I kinda hate this website, and the narcissism it promotes, but it has it's uses. Mainly for sending e-mails to friends, as it doesn't get lost in a sea of junk and spam. I'm picky about who I add as a friend though.

The new layout is quite nice though, and gets rid of a lot of the cluttered mess that people have on their pages. The old layout used to look neat and tidy before those applications came and ruined everything.
