Lba & Gta

Compare 'em... A lovely adventure game and a violent yet hilarious action game.
Don't they seem similar in a subtle way?
The island-based gameplay for example. And the _water=certain death_ equation. Especially the freedom of movement.
Could someone from DMA->Rockstar possibly adapt some of the ideas by Adeline? Sounds crazy, but there are such funny coincidences... That little cow joke could arouse similar controversy just like the hot coffee mod...

From what I've seen of GTA, it couldn't be more different to LBA.

Hey! RAzor has some points.

You could consider LBA an early attemp of 3D free-roaming and sandbox game like GTA is, but I don't think Rockstar copied ideas from LBA. The latter company just did a mix of various free roaming games at the moment, remember Zelda's titles, Mario 64 and stuff.
Change the fantasy themes for cities and guns and whola!: Grand Theft Auto

Even the hide objects on GTA feels similar to collecting all the stars in Mario 64

They're completely different types of game. LBA and GTA couldn't be further alike. The only similarity is that you do "missions" or "quests" to progress the story... which can be said for so many other games. The Latest GTA also allows you to swim.

And ofcourse, GTA is also clearly based on Pong- after all the two are very similar. They both use graphics.

Seriously, some of these comparisons are really nuts. In terms of LBA influncing GTA- no real chance. Just about every thing the two have in common was a common idea at the time. It was probably more likely that the free roaming element was borrowed from something like Zork or the Adventure Game than from LBA. Or possibly Fallout, but almost certainly not borrowed from LBA. LBA wasn't really free roaming anyway- yeah you could go where you liked, but eventually you' have to go to a particular point to progress a fundamentally linear game- GTA just wasn't like that*, it was an entirely different kind of free roaming- you didn't have to do the missions to progress in GTA- all you had to do was get a certain number of points.

*Although GTA3 and onwards have been much more linear than GTA and GTA2.

Actualy, the GTA makers listed Zelda(oot) as an influence as laying groundwork for open-ended 3D stuff neccessery fot gta.
Fred also listed Zelda as an influence for LBA. (probably most noticable in the heart/magic container system).

There is nothing wrong with "Copying" elements, especialy seeing as we wouldnt have game genres at all without some copying.
The key between a good game and a bad is not how much it copys, but how much it introduces itself. And LBA introduced a hell of a lot.
And yes, GTA did as well.

Who's serious, anyway? This just could be part of a (flimsy) explanation as to why someone would come to like such different games.
And imagine that whacked-out lawyer sue Adeline for the cow cheat
