File Sharing Software

Okay, I need some help.

Once upon a time...
  • I once used Napster back in the day when Filesharing started
  • I then got dismissed to audio-galaxy when napster got banned
  • I then went to Kazaa when full file sharing was introduced
  • I then got turned off by spyware and adverts that were introduced and ever since
  • have been using Shareaza. Im starting to find that its hard to get what I want from this network (Gnutella 1/2).'
What is the best sharing network , best sharing software to use these days?

Ive hear of things like Bittorrent and eDonkey, but aint real sure of exactly what these are and how they work and if they're were the crowd is today

Can someone catch me up on file-sharing, the best way to get files (ie. what network, software) blah blah blah and anything else you think are tips!

Cheers

The Skitzo one!

Bittorrent is great for big and popular files
I use soulseek for music, since it often has some hard-to-get stuff
And eMule for the other stuff.

I did about the same thing:

Napster back in the 56k days, then audio galaxy, and a bit of the old DC.
Then Dc++ until i found out about bittorrent.

Nowdays I use BitTorrent for nearly everything. Rare stuff can be found on closed trackers. Client of choice: Arureus, current transfer stats: 1.252 TB down, 1.308 TB up.

When I can be arsed I get some stuff from XDCC bots on IRC but that rarely happens anymore.

Get edonkey anjd it has a buit in bittorrent client - best of both worlds. Try to find an old version tho cos the new ones come with adware! Better yet use their own network to d/l a cracked copy

I use DC++, I know a few good Swedish hubs (Sweden totally dominating in number of hubs in the world, yes even much more than USA).

Ancient Spirit at 01:50 ...

1226 User
Total share in hub 163.36 TiB

You gotta have 80 GB share for that, and note it's 01:50...

Also you must have 10mbit speed or more, since BBB is upgrading from 10 to 100 the most got 100mbit now, becuase BBB is biggest in Sweden in broadband

No one should use DC++ today, RevConnect is better in all aspects.

DC++ and Soulseek for music. DC++ and BitComet for TV series (note: I'm not a big downloader).

But freely downloading copyrighted material is wrong.

Yeah, we are rational beings. But there are those who think that it is right as well.

But I buy some CDs and I buy some games!

No it's not.
It depends on a lot of things.
In a lot of countries it's legal to download most copyrighted material (for example in the Netherlands). In these cases it's often only illegal to distribute (e.g. upload) copyrighted material (usually in p2p you also upload when you download).
Further more, there is a lot of copyrighted material that can be freely downloaded or uploaded without any problems. This is often free software ("free" as is beer). But there are also free documents and free music (even with "free" as in speech).
For example:
http://www.magnatune.com/ (free music)
http://sourceforge.net/ , http://freshmeat.net , http://gnu.org , etc.. (free software)
http://www.archive.org/ (a lot of free stuff)
etc.
A lot of those content is still copyrighted (e.g. not in public domain) but perfectly legal to download.

Or what about this: http://orange.blender.org/
A true open source movie

I think Gustav meant it's wrong to pirate stuff the copyright holder wanted you to pay for.

Legalities vary, but I stick by my moral code;

I only download what I can not get legaly first hand.
(either because its hard to get hold off, or it isnt released in this country ect).Second hand, though legal, isnt really different from downloading, because the creators get nothing either way.

I have not followed my rules completely, but have done it mostly.
The exceptions of things that are wayyy out of my pricerange.

I used to use Azeureus for my BT stuff, though I decided it was too bulky, and most of the time, too stupid. I use uTorrent now.

As far as legalities go, I'll rarely download anything illegal. Mostly I download IPTV stuff, like Diggnation, this week in tech, and a few other miscellenious pod/vidcasts. I think that a lot of ISP's and people are making a mistake in fearing or trying to shut down bittorent. Yes, I will agree that most uses for it are either not legal or grey-matter, however, it's an excellent protocol and has some great (legal) uses.

You can't "shut down bittorrent", like you can't shut down http.

Cant really shut down any P2P thing easily.

You can shut down severs (or websites with torrent links).
You can shut down the suppliers of the P2P software.
But if its out and going its pretty hard to stop.

ISP's can often detect some P2P type traffic and some slow it grossly down. However, it isn't too hard for software to disguise itself as web traffic, and I wouldn't be surprised to see more p2p software doing this.
Combined with more anonymity for its users.

Theres also projects like;

Thanks for the link. I just spent some time reading a lot in there, these are some wise people. I read their philosophy page and I actually feel enlightened.
I'm gonna install Freenet, I just have to check it out.

Yes, I dissagree strongly with their copyright views though.
And their Fairshare idea seems complete madness for typical perchase's. (if I want to buy 1 single tv show,or a bit of software, or music Id buy shares in the creators?
As for volentary donation, sure, many would pay...but why should the ones that do pay, be paying for the ones that dont? It might work for one artist makeing one single...but not for a team of people on a project that could take months or years)

Their arguments against copyright seem to be "it cant be done with a freenet, therefor we are against it"

I agree with everything else they say though.
