Storywise, they are indeed both very original.
I mean, really, I have read a lot of Sci-Fi, and watched a lot too...but a gestation of a stela enity inside a planet is not one i remember from anywhere else.
The kidnapped girlfriend is obviously a cliché, and theres a lot of oppressive government type stories already.

LBA2's story is also pretty original...maybe moreso, for a game.
(eg. Name another game with a pregnant main female character)
The villain-being revealed to be the old one is, of course cliché...but the whole regeneration sub-plot was very nice.

As for gameplay, its gota be LBA1.
Is clearly heavily influenced from Zelda, but certainly has enough original things to be groundbreaking still. (movement modes, the magic ball ect)

LBA1 is the definitely the more groundbreaking one, it's like the difference between Alien and Aliens (alienII), the first one is artistic, freekish, moody, very different from anything you've ever encountered, based on primal feelings, and the next one is just more action, more blood, more gore, more monsters, and this feeling of being scared, cramped, chased, is somewhat lesser, couse you've got more power. In LBA1 Twinsen was nothing more than a tiny pebble, the story unfolds gently, but it keeps on coming at you and you don't really know if it's finished until it's finished, while in LBA2 there's this point you know what you've got to do, and you;re holding all the cards, you're a hero, everybody looks up to you, you're a confident adventerous little guy, and you've got sidekicks to help you! You're no longer alone. Of course, in LBA1 you've met helpfull people on the way, but this feeling of being alone was overwhelming, in the second part you're more of a superhero, it's just not the same.

I agree on all accounts, except that in LBA2 I feel more alone than in Relentless. At least, the loneliness in LBA1 is more pleasent, somehow. You feel like you have a burden, a responsibility and that nobody in the world really understands what it is.

In LBA2 everybody understands your responsibility, but they are not in the hurry to help you. And those allies that you do have don't express the same level of desperation as the suffering citizens on Principle Island, or the constantly bombarded Rebels.

When you save the Mosquebee Queen, you're all alone. When you save Colonel Kropman, you do it with a platoon. At the same time, the Rebels who fight along side you don't really pay attention to your (character's) personal goal, which is to rescue the girlfriend and discover the prophecy. This is why I don't think Relentless is so much about loneliness as it is about isolation. In LBA2, everybody knows your name but, they take you for granted. "Go save the world while we sit on our asses."

Jasiek, I think you slightly got off track along the way, this talk is about originality, not about the general feeling of the games.

Both plots, are quite original, yes. LBA 1 probably a bit more though.

Well, it's hard to see how LBA2 could be more original granted that it is based on a predecessor.

Based on what way? If we're talking about the story, then they have almost nothing in common.

Interestingly enough, the ultimate goal of the game is still to rescue someone ( a bit of a vague connection, yes), save the planet from destruction (not such a vague link), and defeat FunFrock (definitely a "rip off" ).

The main driving force is the rescue, the defeat funfrock bit is really only a blip on the plot at the end. (that is, if your looking at whats driving the charecter forward).

LBA2 just as much in common with Zelda Majoras Mask storywise (one of your first major task in the game is to heal someone, then the main plot involves saving the planet from its main threat....its own moon crashing into it, and then the main villian is revealed to be someone else)

I'd say LBA1, due to bieng the first one- LBA2 is still a sequal remember. The plot does follow after the plot of the first game, unless you can think of a reason for Funfrock leaving Twinsun besides Twinsen's actions in LBA1?

It doesn't exactly "follow"... I mean, you can play LBA 2 without playing LBA 1, and still understand it perfectly (I did).

Exactly my point.

LBA2 has the most original story imo. Relentless' story is too "singular".

taking everything into account?
That's easy. LBA1 is way more original. LBA2 didn't add much new elements it mostly added a new adventure.

So the Nintendo guys did copy these things from LBA 2? Nah, I don't think so.
LBA 2's storyline was really pretty original.
