Lightbulb You Dont Know Jack!

Yes,

A new thread idea. The concept of bringing enlightment to those who don't surf the net as much as you that allows them to be as enlightened as you.

The idea is this, if you have discovered something that is fundamental to your own needs in your day to day web or computer life, post it here.

Examples are, the best search engine, the best software for doing [insert what you want here], the coolest new technology/idea thats just starting to boom. The idea is to share what you have discovered what is cool and creative with other unelightened MBN'ers.

Theres so much shoit out there these days, its hard to evaluate everything yourself. Oh, and don't forget to check back, you just might discover something yourself!

Some good links there, although possibly not the most necessary thread.

If people want to find something they can ask. Most of the stuff you've listed is common knowledge, although you've put your own opinions in and such.

How so?
Visualisy everything collapse's down and is skinable.
Resource wise its actualy lighter in Ram use then firefox.

Theres a few things you think are missing staight away mind, but then you find they are just a button press away. (eg pressing "." brings up a firefox-style page search in the corner).

Oh, btw...

Chaosfish, Id like to know what u think on this subject, since using Vista, I find myself using IE7 a lot, it seems to be just as responsive, and quick and has a better tabbing system than mozilla (addition of 'New Tab' to quickly open a new tab, and Quick Tabs for a thumbnail view of all open tabs). I hate to say it, but it seems like they've improved instead of bloat IE7.

umm..its a freaking codec pack. VLC is a player.

Thats like saying "png is sooo much better then paint shop pro"
---

oh, Videolan ownz MediaPlayer Classic.

How is MPC better then VLC ?

Videolan players everything, includeing dvds without worrying about regions.
Heck, it even plays Quicktime files much better then quicktime itself

Actualy, that ones quite weird.
I mean, High diffinition trailers from quicktime.com stutter and lag when played in quicktime for me. (Im just on a 1.2ghz here, with 1 gig of ram).

However, VLC plays them fine.

VLC also transcodes stuff, and somehow seems to fix out-of-sycn audio on the fly.

Oh, and does MPC have Ascii playback mode?

you havnt used it then.
F11 = fullscreen toggle.
Or you just right click and turn off any panel you dont want. (same way you can right click and disable any adverts you dont want ^_^)

Heck, theres only two panels + the normal File/Edit stuff everything has. So Im not sure why you think its cluttered.
I too like everything absolutely clean, but to me opera works well in that regard, as it has no base bar/status bar.

Operas done those since the year dot.

Also, Operas got a "Open in background tab" which is usefull for when you want to open lots of links on a page at once.

Oh, and "Detach Tab" which floats the window seperately.

[Yes, Im becomeing an Opera fanboy]

(not the easiest to use, but once you get the hang of it all,its usefull for removeing logos from videos too, using the "Delogo" filter).

MPC+CCCP is a full solution with roughly the same functionality of VLC, that's why they're comparable.

There's Quicktime Alternative and Real Alternative for MPC. I must admit they're not part of CCCP, then again I never minded installing codecs seperately (which I always did before CCCP).

Main reasons for me to use MPC are the VMR9 renderer mode instead of the quite crappy overlay mode, allowing alpha transparency and all that on top of the video. Subtitles on desktop resolution, looks really neat. On the fly video size scaling and stretching (with keypad). Proper support for video files in MKV and OGM containers. Playing several videos at once (maybe VLC supports that somehow, dunno). I think the dvd playback is region free.

ffdshow (included in the CCCP pack) has many video options. The postprocessing from the ffmpeg project has many options and is the best compared to others quality wise. I wouldn't be surprised if someone has written an ascii extension for it, there's a lot of stuff in the options screen. It's certainly possible with mplayer (using ffmpeg also) on linux (in fact you can play Quake etc in ascii, even over telnet on a remote computer. But that's a different story.)

VLC is nice and all for playing anything, it's cool and portable, but is nothing compared to mpc+ffdshow when it comes to advanced features and overall power. VLC is also a bit buggy from time to time. I always feel discomforted when I'm on my Mac and pretty much forced to use VLC with lack of a truly decent player.

Can't believe I'm still going into this. Anyway, to keep it short for Opera: Firefox has a bigger penis and cooler fanboys. There.

I've been brainwashed by spreadfirefox.com, I'm not objective anymore!
But seriously, IE is a little creepy with the deep integration into Windows, and now into Microsoft.com. You can screw up your operating system if you install the wrong ActiveX plugin and there's always this feeling Microsoft is watching you...

The reason not to use IE7 is simply resources.
What Opera does best, and Firefox close second is being ram efficiancy.
Load up 20 identical sites in each, and IE will use drasticaly more of your system resources.

But all you codecs you talk about will also work in VLC.

CCCP + VLC is just as applicable as MPC + CCCP....too different, interchangable things. The fact that VLC is a full-solution for playing some things without external codecs, should be a positive thing, not a negative one.

So it still dosnt make sense to argue a codec pack too me.

As for MPC vs VCL which is the direct comparison.

I can certainly load many VLC windows up at once, and it certainly does support transparancys fine. (heck, using it on XGL linux I can have 4 streams all playing, all transparent overlaying eachother...one of which was a DVD...I can then take the whole desktop cube and rotate it XGL rules. )

Using the keypad to resize?
Well, never needed more then fullscreen toggle myself....but im sure its doable, seeing as its got a long list of controll configerations, includeing gestures if thats your thing.

VLC has quite a few rendering modes, I dont know what the default is, but whatever the default is it dosnt seem to be crippling my version.

As for subs...dunno...I watched "A very long engagement" and the subtitles seemed fine. That was using its internal one that just looks for text files in the same directory. I assume it supports codec-based sub solutions, like any other direct play thing, but i never tried.

As for overall power, what is there to power other then overall features and controll? I admit, I havnt updated MPC in awhile, so im not sure if im missing a few things.

But its fun argueing, because most firefox users intensively argue against IE users

Yes, its quite high up the cool-pointless list.

On a simerla note, theres also an Ascii Nintendo DS TV/Video streamer
