VLC supports external codecs/filters?

Does alphatransparency work in Windows too? I was talking about the Windows video overlay, obviously it works fine in Linux/OSX.

Image resizing/stretching is good for videos with bad aspect ratio, or badly cropped (with a border or something).

What I meant with desktop resolution subtitles is that the subs are enlarged on a vector level when going fullscreen instead of the default in many video players where the subs are embedded on top of the video image and enlarged by the default resize function also used fot the video image. So the subs in MPC (with the right settings) look much sharper and smoother. Of course this will not work with hard subs or sub rips (straight from DVD), those are bitmaps (easy to convert to text-based .srt files though). MPC supports formatted subs too, quite common with anime these days.

I always used to use Opera on Windows (and I do agree with Darkflame that it's better in many ways than Firefox) but when switching to Linux I found it wasn't as good – I think it's optimised for KDE, and I use Gnome. So Firefox it is, with the mouse gestures extension (which I can't live without).

Personally, I find some of the more obscure extensions in Firefox to be quite useful. For instance, I like Zotero for organizing my research for school stuff, and CustomizeGoogle for getting rid of ads in Google/GMail (not sure if Opera has this one). Also, I'm not sure whether or not Opera supports quick searches, which I use quite frequently, although they aren't for everyone.

Excellent.

I was playing a DVD using VLC last night and I had to give up using it because the frame output was not smooth, and was jumpy and annoying.

I'd like to know how this new player compares with the others!

Cheers Medur. It's true. Too bad the Windows and OSX guis (if any) aren't very actively developed on.
I use mplayer when downloading a file from ftp/http/dcc, it doesn't check for file completeness and keeps reading so you can stream it while downloading.

7zip is cool.

Maybe 7zip does the best job, but I really don't like the Interface. WinRAR is cool.

It does. It probably did before Firefox as well...

Quick searches? Quick searches on a search engine using the URI in the navigational toolbar, you mean? I'm fairly sure that was in the first version of Firefox, since it was standard in the Mozilla Application Suite's(now SeaMonkey) Navigator.

Why pick one compression type when u can have it all?

http://www.izarc.org/news.html IZ-arc is the way to go.

Seriously tough I'm not sure if it's the best, the 3.5 beta 1 had some annoying problems, however it's somewhat more updated now.

Also Comodo Firewall seems to be a great freeware firewall (for advanced users)

Essentially, yes. I mean typing in something like "wp Venus" into the URL and it coming up with a wikipedia search for Venus (same thing with search engines and other sites). I know Mozilla has had it for quite a while (possibly before Firefox), although I'm not sure if Opera has it and if so how long they've had it for.
