Email from Fred

This is the wattered down version, there was more but was totally non-lba related, such as fred asking about my gf, and commenting on not being able to pronounce my name (france trip i couldnt get him to pronounce it) and some other things. Anyway, here it is (this is the questions he responded to)

First thing I noticed, Ludoid is still not yet a company, so if that's the case, what is the name of the company/team you are working with at the moment. Will there be a website anytime in the near future?

Ludoïd is a real company since march 11th 2005, I only bought my domain name a few weeks ago, www.ludoid.fr and .com but it's still the default page of my host service. (which is Gemosys, the company made by my old NoCliché IT manager friend Jerome Roseau). I will soon put a waiting page with my logo.
Through Ludoïd, I work with a few companies as a consultant, and slowly switching to only work with Ubisoft. I started a big PC project (which isn't LBA) with them. My wife is a Ludoid employee, working with me on every projects ("homebrew" projects delayed).

Also, I'm a bit confused as to what platform you develop for at the moment. I'm presuming you are currently developing a game for the PC, if so, what genre does the game come under? Any update on the game you are developing with your wife?
No comment about the Ubisoft project, may be beginning 2008.

You said in your last email to me that there have been some recent developments that have pushed LBA3 back another year or two, but that your optimistic about LBA3 being developed then, could you elaborate more please

We are (slowly) still forcasting LBA3 with Didier. We're both very busy. As LBA3 is already very (too) late, it's now for good i think that it will (only) be a next next gen project. My first wish is to first please old LBA fans, and for that it needs to be a huge forward step in many ways. I'm speaking about still having the high tech aspect of the technology used , fills those old geeks nostalgic hole while including their own new way of using moderm computers (which means "one clic is already too much..." (they're getting old too ) ), and be attractive to as many as possible (of course)...

Finally, I'm sure you've heard of Little Big Planet, the revolutionary game for the PS3, which besides looking absolutely amazing and being a reason for which I'd actually like to buy a PS3, also stole the name of LBA. What is your reaction to that, and how do you think it could affect LBA in the future?
SOME BITS CENSORED ON PREVIOUS REQUEST FROM FRED

The impact of this name on LBA3 really depends of its release date. If LBA3 comes soon, it's good because if LittleBigPlanet becomes successfull, people who don't know it will be curious, and if it doesn't comes before a few years, it's just doesn't matter.

P.S. EL please stick in news forum

Bye-bye LBA3 then for me. One gamer lost. Unless he does it on Xbox360, becouse then it could be ported to the PC.

Anyway, thanks for keeping the news coming .

EDIT:
I guess I can understand tough, the PC gaming market is rapidly shrinking - I just wish that the console market had some sort of a forced standarsation, so that when I finally some day in many many years could afford a console I could then enjoy all the best console titles - but I guess that won't happen. Other nice thing would be a card to put into a PCI-e slot, you'd push a button and the PC would switch into a console mode.

What does "next-gen" mean anyway?
Since next-gen for consoles is xbox720, PS4, Wii^2.
xbox360, ps3 and wii are current-gen

I think he means next-gen, as most people are sitll on previous gen, so thats still in a very real way current gen for developers.

So Next/Next gen is when Sony and Microsoft catch up with Nintendos on controlls, and when Nintendo catchs up with them on the tech specs

If Ubisofts project starts in 2008, and takes 2 years too complete, that would be 2010, give LBA3 two-three years of development and that puts it in that time period.
Scary looking at that really, but, we can only dream what will be possible for LBA3 to do then

oh, and name predictions;

PS4000 (sony attributes poor ps3 sales to microsoft having a higher number)
Xbox129600 (microsoft is a few steps ahead still, however)
Nintendo Vi (Nintendo's 7th)

Consoles are generally cheaper than up-to-date gaming PC's.

Apart from that, it seems strange to release a console-only game, as a sequel to a game series mostly played on PC? Much like Starcraft Ghost was console-only. Surprised me a lot.

But that's been cancelled.

If Fred does LBA 3 at Ubisoft, it will for sure be multiplatform. (As stated before; Ubisoft is heavily multiplatform)

They are only cheaper when you buy a brand new PC, but as most of the world is not the us where people do that... it's upgrading part by part, wich is a lot cheaper and it's easier to amass not such a big of a sum.

nah, you spend about the same overall, its just because its spread out it seems less. 3 typical small pc upgrades would get you a Wii, graphic card + cpu + motherboard = xbox360, and well, everything combined and then some = PS3. (which is were the argument falls down )

Console life being about 7 years, compared to the upgrades you'd do on your pc to stay "current" costs are normaly cheaper.
But its like steps of progress rather then a gradient.

Remember what the new consoles are too;

The Xbox360, for instance is 3x3ghz cpu's.
Thats quite a beast really.
To buy the equilivent in pc parts would cost a lot.

Console makers normaly sale consoles at a loss to make it make on games.

oh, course, the cheapest (legal) way if your not worried about cost is to just live a generation behind everyone.
Save a fortune AND you get to pick the cream-of-the-crop.
Still, takes will power.

The significant difference is that I can take steps in upgrading my PC, I may overally spend more money, but I would never be able to afford all those upgrades or a console at one time - hence a console is out of the question, and I always manage to somehow sell my old parts, so I get at least 1/4 - 1/2 of the money back - and that's basically the only reason why I was able to upgrade my PC over the years.

which all adds up to a point of, if LBA3 is going to be DX10. Everyone's going to have to save up for Vista and a new graphics card...

Pfft, you all know throwing the magic ball with the Wiimote...or I guess next-gen would be Twii-mote, would be insanely more awesome than pressing the ALT button on the keyboard.

Seriously, I like PC games, but damn. I'd take a console version 95% of the time.

Yes, motion controlled magic ball though would rock

Especialy if it worked a little like Wii-bowling.
That is, you hold down a button to "hold" the ball, and release it to though...the arc being worked out from your arm movement itself.

Still, even on a pc I think a little improvement could be done.
*Holding* Alt down and releaseing for the strength of the throw, would be a slight improvement, imo
