I'd love to have something like that.
Mechanical stuff is awesome.

If I win the lottery, Id try to get my own Difference Engine built.

That's old as shit.

I have a Galaxy S4 and I love it.

Androids are king. iphones are the worst brand phones you can get unless you jailbreak them. And even then they suck.

iPhones are fine hardware wise, well built, pretty good components.

Its just a shame Apple is so terrified of having anything open. Its like they think they wont be successful without locking in every one of their customers to their ecosystem. Their brand is powerfull, they would be successful for fashion reasons alone, they dont need the lock-in.

So what does everybody think of M$ buying out Nokia? I still don't see myself a Windows phone of all things.

That's up to you... Nokia always had a good reputation with cellphones, so I think you should be OK if you search for any defects or bugs that the model you wish to buy may have before buying it

m$ buying nokia means nothing to me, I don't like windows os at all, it has even more limitation than iOs. Android gives you much more freedom, and if that much isn't enough, you can easily root any android device in 10 minutes.

Windows phone, heard only good things about it.

But windows will never be fashion. It's forever linked to the os of your PC, and however good a job it does there, it still feels the odd one out when talking about mobile.

However, I have to say it looks pretty good, in contrast to IOS.

10 minutes? Wow, it doesn't even take that long

Antitrust case? Certainly very dodgy given a ex-Microsoft coe went to nokia, their shares plummeted, then they get bought out....by microsoft.

Looked at it better, Microsoft's official website is indeed hidden among the results

For me the top two results of a search for "M$" are Microsoft's official website and its mobile version.

It is hidden amongst the results, but the link doesn't direct to microsoft's website itself.

If Microsoft were smart they wouldn't even attempt to compete in the smartphone market now. I'd rate the Ubuntus phone a lot greater chance of success then the W7 ones.

They could, however, just aim lower and exploit what Nokia's good at; Making actual phones with long life and durability.
Sale cheap, no-nonsense, "just a phone" things.

The only change would be, possibly, enough tech to support wireless tethering.

Alright, let me try to explain:

Darkflame said that Microsoft should make low-end traditional mobile phones, not smartphones. He said that Ubuntu would have a bigger chance succeding in the phone market than Microsoft would have with their own smartphone. (Which says a lot considering I don't see Ubuntu having much of a chance).

But Microsoft is never going to do that. They aquired Nokia especially to make their own in-house iPhone competitors. Just like they did with the iPad killer Microsoft Surface. Which was a massive flop on the market no matter how good of a product it was.

Surface was good hardware killed by a crappy OS crippling it. Even if you could get past the interface restrictions, and wernt fooled by the two versions, then your still left with almost half the devices space being used up by the OS!

As for the Ubuntu phone vs W7.... I think neither have much chance against iOS and Android. Those two have massive app stores, established distro and brands.

The only people choosing other phones are going to be those doing it deliberately - who want those new choices for their features or because they are against Google & Apple on ethical or privacy grounds.
And on both those points, well, I think the Ubuntu phone looks more interesting, and doesn't have the negative stigma of Microsoft these days.

Yup, but good products.
They just have a bad image as windows is not cool for a phone device. It smells of buggy boring desktop win95 etc.

I bought myself my first smartphone a month ago, a Samsung Trend. I do strongly recommend it for people who don't want to pay too much. It's decently fast, decent camera and light souce flash. Good battery and a modern android version. Only shortcoming I've found is that the GPS is very slow, almost useless. I can't see how the competitive brands can survive when Samsung can give all this for like a hundread bucks or so.
