This is all manner of screwed up. Thread needs to be renamed to "Big Brothers are watching you."

Careful, their EULA covers retreiving data from consoles:

Quote:
When you use EA online and mobile products and services or you play our games on your PC or console, we may collect certain non-personal demographic information including gender, zip code, information about your computer, hardware, software, platform, media, mobile device, mobile device ID, console ID, incident data, Internet Protocol (IP) address, network Media Access Control (MAC) address and connection. We also collect other non-personal information such as feature usage, game play statistics and scores, user rankings and click paths as well as other data that you may provide in surveys, via your account preferences and online profiles or through purchases, for instance.
Quote:
2. Consent to Collection and Use of Data.

You agree that EA may collect, use, store and transmit technical and related information that identifies your computer (including the Internet Protocol Address), operating system, Application usage (including but not limited to successful installation and/or removal), software, software usage and peripheral hardware, that may be gathered periodically to facilitate the provision of software updates, dynamically served content, product support and other services to you, including online services. EA may also use this information combined with personal information for marketing purposes and to improve our products and services. We may also share that data with our third party service providers in a form that does not personally identify you. IF YOU DO NOT WANT EA TO COLLECT, USE, STORE, TRANSMIT OR DISPLAY THE DATA DESCRIBED IN THIS SECTION, PLEASE DO NOT INSTALL OR USE THE APPLICATION. This and all other data provided to EA and/or collected by EA in connection with your installation and use of this Application is collected, used, stored and transmitted in accordance with EA's Privacy Policy located at www.ea.com. To the extent that anything in this section conflicts with the terms of EA's Privacy Policy, the terms of the Privacy Policy shall control.
But yes, if you don't have ultra personal information on your PS3 such as the password to your online banking, then at least that is safe. I guess.

I am tempted to use a new strategy of getting games elseware and sending a check directly to developers.

During his closing speech, Blizzard director Jay Wilson added saying, "God forbid that anybody should exercise the right to play games their own way."

In other news, EA released a statement today stating that its attempt to record your keystrokes on your computer, such as when you try to do on-line banking, is simply to improve your gameplay experience.

NwN managed to do this pretty well, I think. When you played an offline campaign, it would just run a server in the background (afaik), and if you set up a server for others to join, you could choose whether to allow people to use their own 'local' characters or not. If you did, then you pretty much got a server full of hacked characters, so it really wasn't much fun.

So long as D3 has a single-player campaign, I think it'll still be enjoyable to play. I understand that they want to push the online/co-op experience, although I think that it would be nice to be able to play offline, especially when an Internet connection is not readily available. That said, I suppose I can understand the desire to simplify things technically by hosting the 'server' online, although obviously this will require Blizzard to have quite a bit of server capacity.

Also, afaik, EA doesn't ship keyloggers, even with it's most invasive copy-protection software.

It doesnt and thy probably wont - just an over zelous EULA writter.

But still, in the past Sony had their rout kit crap that installed to a invisible hard drive sector and checked every CD you use . So I wouldn't put anything past what DRM is designed too do.

Meh, Sony's already lost any personal data I had on my PS3 earlier this year. Thankfully, I don't have any info on there except for my PSN login.
