Are you still dressing up? I've stopped in grade 5!

Not that my costumes until then were so original:
Clown (the most original costume in the world! )
Painter
Mouse
Indian
Tourist
A Cornflakes box

Carnaval. It's like Halloween, people getting dressed up, like batman, or a nurse, or anything. They don't give eachother candy, though.

It's the beginning of 40 days of fasting.

Christian Carnaval is the feast of 3 days (or 4 in some cities) in which people dress up funnily and party.
It has a load of customs as well, like a carneval prince (whom in medieval times was allowed to rule the city or village for 3 days) and also parades of strange and often funnily decorated cars and such (and they also tend to throw candy at you )

officially, it would be followed by 40 days of 'fasting', but that's rarely being done these days.

Well I'd say congretulations
What kind of history is behind this holyday?

Just about the same history as all other Jewish festivals: they wanted to kill us, we won, let's eat!

Yeah, especially that the "let's eat" part usually comes with really good food!

Nope, not the carnaval. It's carnival when there are all kinds of machines where you can ride in. Sort of a mini amusement park.

Carnaval is the festivity.

pfffft, how sad.
Also some guy I know doesn't do anything in Purim.
It's a shame, it's so fun to be something else and walk outside.

I've checked a few dictionaries. Carnaval is not English; the proper word is carnival .

We don't just celebrate without a reason= we have reasons to celebrate
We just don't celebrate without a reason= we simply don't celebrate without a reason.

OK, this is supposed to be a happy thread (even though it can't really be one with people like me around ), please don't turn this into another Israel Discussion thread .
