Is it really directed by Tim Burton? IMDB lists also another director.
Thing was that the Nightmare before Christmas movie was actually not directed by him but by Henry Selick. It was an adaption of a story Tim Burton wrote, he had nothing to do with the actual film

Anyway, So they recorded actors and then cel-shaded it? Or did they make really good CG and then cell-shaded it? In any case, I always thought you could do better than Appleseed. Like, you think, cell-shading looks good, so how does it look if it's pre-rendered. I see appleseed, I'm dissapointed, I see this, I'm happy.

Its a special type of rotoscoping techique...not sure how its done exactly.
I think its a mixture of automatic filters and manual drawing. (probably almost like Flash-work).

While I originaly intended new trailers, I didnt specify in the title
