Its (not) dead Jim!

Just to let you know I am still gearing my 3D learning towards makeing this movie.
Recently i have learnt a hybred animation techique that combines the use of "rag doll" physics, manual keyframeing and even Biped footsteps.
By using motion-flow in max i can now pick, mix and "blend" animations together, drasticaly increaseing flexibility of animations

Overall, in non-techical terms, this drasticaly, reduces the workload of animating the feature, probably by at least 30% if not 50%.

For examples of tests see:
www.darkflame.co.uk/test_physics_mocap.avi
www.darkflame.co.uk/ru.avi

Dont expect them too look impressive, both of these were made in 1 evening and are just designed to show of the "blended" animations.
They are barely block animations, but non of it was taken from pre-made animations of any kind.

Note:
Download clips, dont stream (sever cant take it)
As always, you need Divx to play them.

Didn't download the videos, but nice to see that there's still *some* progress on the project .

Why not download? the first one is just 300kb
The other one is just 1MB.

Its not exactly progress on the RMP, its more like progress on my skills which will help the project.

Brilliant stuff - is this quite easy to do? Does it require special plugins etc or just a new version of Max (available via a Donkey friend of mine ). Looks very impressive anyway

Kewl to see that animation is getting easier

Personally, all my attempts at animating characters hav been total failures, even when I try to get some help from character studios. I never manage to set the weight of bones properly, there are no possibilities to modify or move the CS skeleton only as soon as you've attached it to a skin mesh, the animation timings are always weirdy....argh I think I'll never do anything right as long as time and soft bodies are involved. I drop it, I'll have to content myself of my little 3D modelizing skills
But OMG if C++ could be of any use in such a project.....

Right I'll upload those two kewl shots asap.
Nothing new around the scenario btw ?

Its a few skills combined that allow this stuff to be used.
The most important one is "Motion Flow", which allowed blending off animations.
This is built into Charecter Studio (Max5,6) and is very powerfull indeed.

You can even set up crude "inteligence" and program the charecters like bots.
This isnt needed for the RMP, but it really demonstrates how powerfull the system is.

To use Motion flow effectively you have to make animations first, ver keyframes, footsteps or imported from another app.
You then save them as max's format, and use them in motion flow
Its a huge topic, and i have left out a lot of discriptions

Not really

CS is a big topic and it took me ages to learn.
I can only give a few bits of advice.
First, check out the "Dope Sheat" when using CS.
This lets you change the timeing of footsteps....drasticaly improving the default timeings...allthough its a lot of work.
Second, learn how to use "layers" of animations from CS...this lets you keyframe bits of the body seperately from, say, footstep motion.
So you can have a guy walking along using the default footsteps...but then animated his arms and hands manualy doing something else

direct link to the divx download:

http://download.divx.com/divx/DivX511.exe

Divx is the codec i use 99.999999% of the time, so anything RMP related is going to use it.
