Spacetime (Nerdy But Cool)

I could say this is a wonderfull way to show to people how time is a dimension exactly like space is, and to understand the concept of a 4D cube of spacetime.

But I shouldnt because its darn cool and that might put people off:

You dont have to get it, you just have to watch the cool videos
They are just pushing and pulling time about the same way you can push and pull images about with Power Goo (or simerla).

I like the danceing videos myself (check site, theres loads), allthough the day/night one is probably the best one to understand.

Or look at the site and download the "Fuego" one.
(which is a bit of paper being burnt, then viewed temporaly as if it was liquid!)

It does look cool. I wish I would've got it though... It is supposed to make some sort of sense right?

I've always wondered what the 4th dimension is about.

Its kinda hard to explain, but it does make sense.

Takeing a image you have X,Y co-ordinates. (that is, up/down and left/right)

With an animation you have the same height and length (up/down,left/right), but you also have time.
Each frame is stored at a point in time, and (normaly) you just see one after the other in a liner way.

With this, they have "layered" time as if it was depth. (as well as X/Y you also have Z, but Z is time).

So many "slices" of a movie are are made into a static cube which is the whole.
Then their program push's into and plays about with what layers of the cube you see.

So you can see the past and future at the same time.
arg.
Its not easy to explain sorry

It gets harder when you think that they are just dealing in 2D slices makeing a 3D cube rather then the real world which is 3D slices makeing a 4D cube.

The first chapter of H.G. Wells' The Time Machine explains it quite well. A 2D square can't actually exist in real life. In the same way, a 3D cube that lasts no time at all can't exist. All objects have length, width, depth and duration.

Edit: Darkflame beat me.

Darkflame: Actually you just explained it better than any other explanation I've read. Actually I think I finally got (or started to get) what the 4th dimension is.
I'm now wiser, thanks!!

Wouldn't it be cool if human beings could actually see a 4D cube?

It would be very very cool indeed!

If our brains could take it
Its hard to even imagine a 4D cube..our brains are built to deal with 3D space and a liner view of time. We cant really visualise 4D things
(allthough we can try:
http://dogfeathers.com/java/hyprcube.html

Thats more like a shadow of a 4D shape though really
)

Yes but you get bonus points for using a cool author

Also, I try to encourage the expression of "Pre" and "Post" as directions of time.

eg, Left/Right
Forward/Backwards
Up/Down
Pre and Post

Durection is the distance from pre to post

Well, it looked insanely cool, and once again, my brain turns it into something rather silly: I just want a video game using it. NR controller: Wave your hand = Alter time.

But, wasn't this whole thing, just a terribly advanced version of rewinding or fastforward?

Yup.

They should put it in next-gen DVD players. (I hope Nintendo is watching this stuff...their controller would be perfect).

You should watch the tv show Threshold all of you btw, the aliens there can see 4D. And they have 4D objects which humans can't see at whole. And besides it's a great sci-fi show.

Now thats a good concept.
I think a game used that concept once too...for the box you keep your items in.

Of course, thats another spacial dimension, not time though
(I think..so thats 4D space plus 1D time?)
maybe.

The fourth dimension is time...
We live in a four dimensional space: three dimensions of space + one dimmension of time, didn't you had phisics at school ? Didnt you played "The Dig" for Gods sake?! It' all explained there jeeez.
We can move about in the three dimensions of space (like coordinates x,y,z)
but time is a constant value in wich we cannot travel/move.

Ymmm, sorry didn't clicked "refresh" - It was a reeply to Illuminas's post
