Google (chrome) OS

Well, they finally are working on one;

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/

Quote:
Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we're already talking to partners about the project, and we'll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.

Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work.
Sounds to me its going to be like Splashtop/Gateway Express, which is a near-instant booting linux on asus motherboards these days. (Just email, skype and web, but still usefull).

Cool!

The OS scene could sure use a lot more competition, and it's about time Google join in.

...I just hope they won't make it white.

I suspect it will be white, but only because it has nearly no interface whatsoever and defaults to the google homepage in the center :P

I'm all for lightweight programs, especially OS'es. Vista takes forever to boot, so I'd love to see MS getting more competition and trimming down the fat from their products.

Hopefully this'll push web apps to be more usable and most importantly more powerful (like Google Docs is no where near as usable or useful as Microsoft Word).

Looking forward to it!

I hope it has integrated cloud storage, fully usable like a local drive, that'd be awesome.

i think it's a weird move from Google to launch 2 operating systems which actually compete with each other for a bit.

Perhaps the Android Market (and it's apps) will be integrated into their Chrome OS? Although that then defeats the purpose of pushing web applications, I suppose. I don't know.

No they're not. Android applications are Java-like: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dalvik_virtual_machine

ah, right, got-ya.

Whats the bet that at some point they start having this OS as standard with Chrome itself?
Installed like Ubuntus windows-based installers.
