Googles 10^100(Idea that will help the most people)

Google recently got a lot of people to submit ideas they feel would help the most people.
You can now vote on the main ones;
http://www.project10tothe100.com/vote.html
Google will use the votes to help choose 5 projects to fund, which they will donate $10million to in total.

I'm actual quite partial to the last one. (even if they pick fairly trival examples).
Although I suspect something more obvious like land-mines will that will get the most votes.

Ah well, still some good stuff there.

nah, Google is God slowly pulling itself back together after a botched suicide attempt that we call the big bang.

Enhance science and engineering education.

The amount of people not interested in astronomy or evolution and not really understanding them is staggering.

the amount of people not interested and not even understanding the spirit-part of our nature is even more staggering but no one will make a campaign for that

The what?

Oh, you mean the misdirection of the childish trustworthiness towards their parents to other people saying they have ultimate answers when in reality they just engage in unfounded and irrational/ignorant mysticism? Or do you mean the pursuit of answers that is innate to all people, that in some people however leads to acting on an impulse based on an unconscious false idea that even a bogus explanation is better then no explanation?

I hate all that new-age bullcrap... it encourages shit like homoeopathy (which is wasted money that could otherwise be spent on actually curing people), tarot reading, wicca, "alternative medicine" (money scams) and the like. And for some weird reason people who live in an age of mass vaccination, without being surrounded by "proper" disease flock to all that. It's really that simple, if it can't be measured in any way or testable predictions can't be made based on it, it's a yet to be proven hypothesis AT BEST, most of the times it means it DOESN'T EXIST.

* Jasiek throws "spirit-part of the human nature" to the latter bag.

A modern philosopher Daniel Dennet said something nice on the matter "Of course the soul exists! But it's made of neurons".

When the sprit-part of nature is responsible for inventing something significant, then we should encourage and pursue it.
In the meantime, lets encourage the scientific method, which has given us pretty much everything.

Besides, if there -is- any truth in any spiritual/new-age stuff, youd need to apply scientific methods to get anything useful from it anyway. Things viewed as magic sometimes do become science when understanding increase's. (lodestone,lightening,eclipses..)

There are plenty of campaigns for "the spirit-part of our nature" anyway; examples are the Alpha course, Jehovah's Witnesses knocking on your door, scientologists giving "free stress tests", missionaries all over the world.

I voted for "Encourage positive media depictions of engineers and scientists".

Since popular media = brainwash, might as well brainwash everyone to be smart not to be stupid.

To be fair, Google is not the only ubiquitous (yay I learned a new word) company. Virgin is one example coming to mind - they make soft drinks, videogames, and spaceships.

Nothing wrong with ubiquitous as long as your not locking your customers into your products. (which is why Google>Apple). Or you use one monopoly to gain another. (arguably google might be claimed to be trying this with search, mail, maps etc....but its a bit harder to pin this stuff when their products are normaly better then their competitors anyway...Anyone remember how rubbish maps where online before google maps? Or how small email was before gmail?)

As for Virgin, never know what to think of them. They seem willing to try anything, and often they fail horribly (Virgin Cola, for example).
I love the fact they invested in commercial spaceships so much. Moreso, they invested publicly even before SpaceShipOne won the Xprize. (if it exploded on re-entry, it wouldn't have exactly been good publicity for them)

I also hate the British government for not letting them buy Concord either.
Real step backwards for technology and common sense that was.
Its one thing to stop monopolys when theres other people offering something else, its quite another to stop a company from doing something thats going to be scraped and no one is offering an equivalent.

Isn't that a slippery slope, though? Through ubiquity, competition is eliminated.

Yes, ish.
The only thing that keeps your customers coming back is the quality of your service. If at any time Google start fucking up, I can switch with nothing much lost.
All my google docs can be saved to open formats, I can export my google mail to a pop3 etc.

If I was locked in however, with custom formats or the inability to export, it becomes a different issue completely. Then its no longer about "whos offering the best" but rather "we used to be the best, but now we dont have to worry because no one can be bothered changing as its too much hassle".

Its also another issue altogether when you make an OS. As then customers might be force to stay with you because your the best supported thing, despite the fact you havnt been cutting edge or good value for money for a long time.

So it could indeed be a slippery slope, but for me the key issue is always "how easy is it to leave?".

Its their doddle thing. I think it glitchs though, as sometimes they do one and I dont get it
Or I only get it in the small results logo and not the main one.
Caching issue probably.

Incidentally, I got GoogleWave
Its a lot slicker then what it was, but its still no where near as usable as gmail is. Not yet anyway.
