My Ultimaker 3D Printer...in 3D!

We bought a 3d printer!
A Ultimaker to be exact.

Stop motion 3d footage of our ultimaker being assembled:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nasm...ature=youtu.be

(filmed on a 3ds)

So far we have just printed a whistle (not smooth enough to work) and
after some adjustments a hexagon shape (which came out a lot smoother).
We got a lot of fine tuning todo before our prints are upto the quality they should be. First job is a firmware upgrade which is supposed to fix the blobbing.

Somebodys got themself a new toy.

I gotta live a little more. I didn't even know 3D printers existed.
That whistle still looks pretty good for it being the first thing you made. You should make dino-fly! That'd be awesome. or citadel island

oh, I will!
Gota get better at using the thing first though.

Some models need supports added in order to be printed correctly (as it prints from the bottom up in slices, you cant have anything hovering in midair while waiting for a higher layer to connect it :P)

$27 for 750g in reals:
https://shop.ultimaker.com/en/consumables.html

Seems to last quite awhile given you can print half hollow models depending on how strong you need them. You can print in ABS or PLA, both about the same cost.
PLA seems a lot easier to print nice models in, but its not quite as strong.

There is a program for that already...cant find it now though
It did basic rectangle bricks, but any number of pegs you like in x/y

Nope, he has delusions of grandeur and is using the 'royal we'.

Does it take a long time to print a model, given that it has to do a number of layers?

When you say you have to get better, what do you mean ? I thought you simply had to do some 3D model on the comp and then the print prints it.

In thoery, yes.
But...

a) Its very new - "cutting edge" if you like. Theres still softwarre bugs, patchs, optimizations etc. For instance the "blobbyness" you see on that image happens because the printer head has to pause occasionally to read the next bit of gcode.
(think of gcode as instructions like "move 5 forward" or "raise temp to melt plastic").
The new firmware can read the code without pausing, so you dont get the blobbing.

b) Because it was self-assembly there might have been mistakes we made when putting it together. I think we got it all right, but we arnt 100A% sure

Yes, we all look down upon our subjects without thy 3d printers.

(actually, its technically my companies printer; lostagain.nl . Not at all for tax reasons! honest! I am sure I'll do some work on it sometime....)

yes!
The whistle only takes, like, 10minutes
But some of the large models you see in that gallery take hours!

Hm I know nothing about this. Could you print a rubik's cube for example or similar puzzles? That would be cool.

Nice whistle. Saw some printed flutes too. Made me wonder if the stuff isnt toxic in some way. This one is pretty sweet too: http://www.blendernation.com/2012/01...nted-zoetrope/

It should be pretty safe - its ABS and PLA.

It might be dangerous if you overheat and then breath it in though, so you certainly want to keep the area well ventilated if your temperture is going to high.

Love that zoetrope!

So, any progress?

--

A few questions...

How big can the objects be?

And considering you made a whistle; is it possible to make other, functionable, instruments, such as an ocarina or a flute?

Flute certainly is possible, the designs are up and Ive seen working printed ones.
Not sure about a Ocarina, but Id guess so.

Why stop there though...you could invent new instruments!

Heres the full specs:

Code:
Technology - FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication)/Thermoplastic extrusion
Frame size - ~ 34 x 35.5 x 39 cm / ~ 14" x 14" x 15.3"
Weight - ~ 9 kg
Build materials - PLA and ABS (supported)
PCL, HDPE, PP, PMMA (known to work, YMMV)

Materials used - Chrome plated hardened steel precision rods, brass bushings and linear ball bearings

Speed - Max. head travel speed ~ 400mm/s. Read how...
Electronics - RepRap based. Up to 5 stepper drivers. 4 axis by default.
Accuracy - Positioning better than < 0.05 mm (1/16th micro stepping)

Build volume - ~ 210 x 210 x 220 mm, almost 10 liters (single tool mode) / 8.27" x 8.27" x 8.67"

Haven't printed much more, been too busy.
I did make my company name on a stand and a little desk hock for earphones :P

Can't find the company name right now

Heres the desk hock:

I've designed a mk2 with a cup holder, but haven't had a chance to print it.

Theres also new software for the processing I want to try.
