*makes note for the version of this thread in 3013*

More predictions:

* There will be a major leak of data from a social network site.

* Microsoft will surprise everyone with some really cool tech for their next xbox.

* At least 3 AR consumer headsets will come out, not from Google

* Arrested Developments new season a major success - Netflick (and others) start commissioning major shows primarily for the download market.

* New tvs with basic internet built in become the norm, and not just the higher end stuff.

Isn't this the case already? I've bought two HD TV sets in the past 5 years. Neither of them were top end models (although from a solid brand) but nearly every option in that price range had basic internet apps. Most new TVs have, at the very least, some sort of Netflix, Hulu, etc.

Or do you mean for web browsing, ala consoles?

I looked a few months ago, and it was still just mid to high stuff, not everything. Every LCD probably, but a lot of plasmas still didnt.
Maybe thats changed now.

No, I didnt specific mean Internet - they could do that easily software wise (look at those $25 Rasbury PIs with HDMI outs), but you need some decent control method and that will push the cost of remotes up.

I wonder if the tablet market hasn't cornered the market on go-to devices for internet/media networking. Sure, it's cool to put YouTube on the TV, and that is almost standard now. But whereas streaming to a TV was something nifty 5 years ago, I get the impression that tablets have overtaken the TV in many respects when it comes to internet access and media convenience.

I don't own one, and probably won't anytime soon (they don't do much for me, although I've used them with friends), but I can see their appeal.

Simple issue with tablets, you need to put them on a stand to sit back and watch anything.
I think for that reason people will always prefer a big fixed screen. (unless good cheap projectors start becoming common).

Streaming an option (which I use myself via a laptop), but I don't think it will be as easy for most as just having it all built into the screen. Plus, I guess its more power efficient for the TV to stream directly from the net rather then via another device.

Next time I upgrade my tv, I'm certainly going to try to get a method to stream from a HD or net without needing another device inbetween. Idly one media harddrive shared for the house network.

Definitely not around here.

Either way I think we already have enough electronic devices to alienate us without this feature on TVs (which I rarely watch anyway).

That actually brings up a good point. Although many of us have smartphones and computers capable of providing instant communications, I'm actually surprised that there hasn't been some sort of TV media hub that would enable videochat through a TV set ala Back to the Future Part II. Maybe it already exists, and I can't imagine it would be that hard to implement. But videocalls on a big screen? Seems ideal if the quality could be maintained.

Your free to have discussions on anything else in their own threads. - topics have to be at least vaguely consistent with what they are called.
