2 decades later....

Just got the Beta of "Elite: Dangerous"

Elite was a series of space games that essentially invented the concept of an open world sandbox. Back when games typically had a score and lives and a linear set of levels, Elite introduced an open world "do what you want" idea.

The last entry in the series before this was in the 90s and looked like;

Now I booted it up and fly around, it looks like this;

Spoiler:

Come quite far haven't we?

Also, gives some hope for other games coming back after a long break.

Amazing. I'm not sure what ideas Fred has for bringing LBA into the modern gaming world, but I trust his vision and believe he thinks the right way to make it something special.

2 decades seems to be the time period for a comeback doesn't it?

Well, I don't think hed go for super-detailed normal-mapped stuff like this.
Just a guess, but I think stylistically something more like Nintendo's done with their WiiU games would fit. High-res but ultra smooth rather then ultra detailed.

If the budget fits, that sort of style might work as a modern LBA look.

Probably it's not the right thread for this, but I read some news about Beyond Good and Evil 2 yesterday. Probably it's going to be developed for the current gen consoles.

No, Homeless means we can't see the last pic..
True, I love the graphic style of Nin's WiiU games, they aren't extraordinary or anything, but they feel so right !

It will probably be a bit cheaper when released fully. Not sure when that will be however.
Currently in Beta, I understand theres a Gamma too before release.

Currently the main plus points:

* Real, too scale, galaxy. Really good sense of scope and freedom flying about. You ship has various modes (Normal,supercruise and a hyperspace thing) to make things not take too long to get places.
Whatever engine they have made for it is incredible though.

* Attention to detail. Lots of lovely details. If your environmental systems get damaged (or you turn them off) you freeze to death in your cockpit :P
If you communicate on the radio to other players its got a old-radio style effect that breaks up with damage.

* Can be played online in a shared universe, or just with your friends, or completely on your own. It needs a connection at the moment even for the solo mode, but apparently it wont when finished.

* Did I mention the galaxy use's all currently real-world data? Including all those Kepler extra solar planets? They extrapolated based on real data for the gaps in our knowledge....but almost every star you visit is a real star with the type,orbit and known planets in place.

Main downsides atm;

* Not much to do frankly. Theres no story in place in the Beta - current missions are purely "deliver this" or "kill this". Fun enough but not at all upto the potential you could have.

* No mining yet. At some point your supposed to be able to mine asteroid belts and other things. I see spots marked on the map for it, but when I arrived it was nothing but an empty marker.

* The natural wonders of space are great....but there needs to be more man-made stuff out there. More weird stuff to find. At the moment each system seems to just have one station, and currently I have only found 3 station designs.

* Planet textures are a bit rough. I think they are working on a more detailed procedural algorithm to generate them though.

Not in the first release.
They have said the game engine supports seamless planetary landing and ship exploring, but wont work on it for the games release but latter when working on expansions.

In some ways that makes them the opposite of the game "NoMansSky" which I think is doing planet exploration first and moving into space with a expansion latter. (I think it was that game anyway).
Theres also the game "Planet Explorers", but I dont think that does space at all. (still, the demo is cool)
