No.. Microsoft. Well I'm just guessing you know.
XBox360 version - PC version ~= $10
XBox360 sold with $150 loss ... so MS needs $10 to break even on that part. Ofcourse MS also gets money from various other places like XBox Live.

Not sure, the paid for XboxLive stuff might just counter the costs of the free features.

Having a lose leader is common practice, but that's already factored into the figures.
(why I said "microsoft need to sale a lot of games")

Same goes for the Sony PSP, incidentally. When it was released it was estimated, that, over its life, each owner would need to get 12-15 games or films to pay for its lose leader.
Unfortunately for Sony, it seems unlikely they will hit that. (judging by high system sales, yet slow game sales, and near dead UMD sales, it seems people are buying it as mostly for 1 or 2 games+ media playback machine)

Oh, and Sony's non-gaming arms are losing them absolute shit loads.

Basically, the whole of Sony is completely dependant on the PS3 being a massive success. Successful enough to cover both its predicted lose leader (likely to be many $100 per console at first), AND the huge development costs for BluRay/Cell chip.

PS3 seems a sure fire success..but, if you compare to Nintendo;

Nintendo hasn't got any real losses at all. They have enough money for many flopped consoles. Overall nintendo's position is actually far more "safe" then Sony.
Nintendo make less, but they also lose far less then Sony.

In other news...

It seems now confirmed that Nintendos "Nun-chuck" style controller device also has motion sensors in it.
It doesn't have quite the full positioning of the Wii's pointer, but rather angular and directional accelerometers.
(so it can detect fowards/backwards/up/down/left/right..but not give an exact position in space)

Its likely to be used for stuff like holding a shield, of the main controller was a sword, ect.

Some cool additions to the Wii lineup then!!!

Any Camelot created RPG for the DS would be a real bonus too!! Am playing lostmagic right now and don't find it very fun or engaging!

Yes, the reviews on that are a bit disspointing...but then, the DS has some killed RPG's comeing.

Tales of the Tempest and Final Fantasy 3 both look absolutely amazing.
As well as having multiplayer features.
Also...what ever happened to Crystal Cronicals DS

actually... they are all lies... they make a shit load of money on every console sold, they just tell that they lose money over it so people feel sorry for them and buy the damn hardware. Walking right into their trap.
Remember, they are in it for the money, not to make you feel good.

I'm not sure that MS has lost much money from the Xbox (especially with the insanely successful launches of the Halo games, as well as a few others). Yes, the Xbox Live with does cost them money, but I don't think they're losing much... Then again, they're MS, what do they care.

As far as Sony losing money on other ventures, I'm not sure about that, either. Sony TV's, while far from being a smash hit, have sold a number of units (at what I'm sure was a great profit to sony, judging by the prices). The PSP, has, indeed, cost them quite a bit of money, especially with the lack of success with the UMD movies. I wouldn't say, however, that Sony is depending on the PS3 to make them money, so much as the Blu-Ray DVDs, which they will doubtlessly be making huge royalties from for every disk sold. If it becomes the standard, they'll be making tons of money.

The figures I quoted were from shareholders reports and such. 4billion lost over the course of 4 years is accurate far as we can tell.
Halo isnt enough to counter the development costs + the lose leader on the manufactor costs. (as well as any microsoft games failing to make a profit)
Sure, they could be lies, but lieing to shareholders only ends you up in more trouble.

Your right, Sonys TV division has been improveing lately (last year), specificaly with flat panels. But this is after 5 years or so of very poor sales all over sony.(bar games)
Also, remember, Sony cut 10,000 off its workforce recently and sold off 11 of its manufactoring plants (out of 65 it has). This is not a sign of a healthy company.

As for BluRay..well everything does depend on that...but..
Its generaly agreed the PS2s huge success was partly due to it rideing the wave of people converting to DVD players.
This time sony is trying to get BluRay to ride on the back of PS3 sales.

Sony has a heck of a lot rideing on bluray, but it isnt all straightforward even if it does succeed. BluRay discs cost a more to make then HDDVD's, but its doughtfull the public will pay more for them, so theres less profit per disc, and thus sony is unlikely to take much of a cut.
(remember, unlike UMD's, they have to share the cut as well).

BluRay might not flop as badly as MiniDisk or BetaMax (with the PS3 backing it up)...but I am skeptical it will ever even nearly be as successfulll as DVD.
Getting the techy people is quite different from captureing the mass market.

And thats what Sony is counting on.
They have an uphill struggle over the next few years.
(and thats even assumeing HDDVD dosnt make maters worse for them..its dual-form DVD/HDDVD discs might be a more comfortable transition for the market)

Personaly, I think both BluRay and HDDVD will have an extreamly slow take up rate.

Anywho....

I hate Madden. That is to say, I hate all sports games. But because of the Wii info, I love this interview:

More to watch out for;

The NEW mario Brothers

Nintendos first new 2D Mario game in over a decade.
Early previews have been positive, with its gameplay going back very much to the oldschool NES games.
More physics and 3D mesh's make the animation smoother, and they are also chucking in all the Minigames seen in Mario64DS, only this time in wireless multiplayer.
My only worry is it looks a bit liner compared to the "wide" posibilitys MarioWorld and Mario64

Heroes of Might and Magic 5

Now in the hands of Ubisoft, after 3DO went tits-up, the franchise is looking very pretty indeed.
A lot of questions remain as to how well the gameplay will be, but it seems they are keeping the "system" of the game pretty much intact.

Heres something very special;
Another demostration of the very cool ageia physics card:

http://www.bestvideos.org/content/view/384/1/

At E3 there will be a few games enhanced by this card, so its worth watching out for.
