My RATEOHOLIC review site, help and feedback needed.

Ok, I been working on a new site;
www.darkflame.co.uk

Goto the "rateoholic" section.

Its still a very very early prototype, I am learning java as I go along.
The idea of the site is a generic film/game/tvshow/anything style review site.
The difference between this site and many others is;

a) Anything can be reviewed. (food? days of the week? colours? gods? )

b) The site has the ability to try to find reviewers that match your taste the best. The idea being that people that like stuff you like, are likely to like other stuff that you like

Currently the site lets you pick a reviewer, and search for reviews that they have done.
Id like to thank Atresica, and El for making some reviews for me.

There is still very few reviews on the site, and I would like loads more.
If anyone wants to be a reviewer, please PM me and I give you details.

Currently reviews are handeled with very simple XML files (one xml file per reviewer), I'll give out a template to anyone who wants to help.
In future there will be a web interface for the reviewers to edit and create stuff, but thats beyond my skill or time for the moment.
==

What I am looking for at the moment is feedback and bug reports.
I know theres lots of problems, just list the worst
I am particularly looking for any browser compatibility issues.

--In order to test the site, looking up "Apple" or "tmnt" is good, as they are things more then one person has reviewed.

--Frankly though, I need MUCH MUCH more reviewers to get a decent "overlap". So please, if anyone wants to be a reviewer, contact me. Reviewers dont have to be much at all. Just a few lines and a rateing. It will help test the system a lot.

--Any bugs/browser issues, please say browser, version, and OS. (oh, and if its a size issue, your resolution )

--Any comments regarding interface design, functionality, or features are welcome. Just remember this is early stages.

--If anything isnt clear, ask.

Ok, thats all thanks

Reminds me of the swedish site filmtipset.se. It does pretty much the same thing, finding reviewers with the same taste and thereby finding things which might be to your liking, only it's just with films. It works quite excellent, really. But you'd have to have quite a large amount of users for it to be accurate enough. But when there are, it can be pretty darn accurate.

I've been thinking about making a similar site for reviewing of all kinds of stuff, in the past, but never got around to actually do it. I would be glad to help out with anything, along the way.

* Homeless checks out the prototype and will eventually leave some feedback

Thanks for telling me about that site, its nice too see other examples of the same thing

Absolutely.
There needs to be enough reviewers that have reviewed the same thing, and enough coverage to get a few things the user has also seen.

The issues I have developing this mean I'll have to find a fast way for people to add reviewers, as well as being able to handel vaste numbers of reviewers.
I'm still very much a newbie as regards to file handingly information on a sever.

I figure by using xml though, I am "safe" as regards to future proofing and compatibility. If I need to completely change my filesystem, or use a database going from xml isnt hard.

Cheers

Remember, if you write some reviews you can have a logo for your name at the top

It's hard to find something you've reviewed, you need clues. As you mentioned Apple, I also tried banana. LBA was obvious, but I didn't find the games you compared LBA with. Shame on you!

It should be more visible that something has been rated by more than one person, I didn't notice it the first time I looked up Apple.

Yes, a lot more reviews are needed on my part too.
I did a lot of food actualy, one for each letter of the alphabeta
Also a lot of tv/sci-fi shows.

I should do more games for sure.

hmz...point taken.
Would outlineing or changing the colour of that box help? (only if other reviews are found).

I wish!
This is more a warm up for bigger projects, but I still hope to make it as useable and as usefull as possible.

Ok, new version

http://www.darkflame.co.uk/JaveJunk/...ateometer.html

Following Kobolds suggestion, I have made the alternative reviewers highlighted in a colour to hopefully make them more noticable.
I also did a lot more of my own reviews...now over 100.

I also added URL search parameters;
eg;

My reviews for;
LBA,
Labyrinth,
Heroes,
4400,
Farscape,

Fixs this version;

v0.25;
** Made alternatives more visible (Kobold)
** Removed current review from alternatives.
** Added URL search parameters.
** Fixed image size so its always a percentage relative to the page.

it can be a bit difficult to find the proper term, specially when the name contains multiple words

true.
I'm not sure what more I can do to help that, however.
I am open to suggestions.

It already supports multiple names and is caseless. (well, takes everything as small).

Guess I just have to make sure reviews contain all versions of the name. (curse Nintendo, theres half a dozen possibilitys for each Zelda )

Why not just giving a list of all reviewed items?

hmz..where?

I was considering maybe in the search box having it auto-complete to search terms.
But I dont have any idea how to do that at the mo, and fear it might slow the app down quite a lot. (it would effectively be looking up stuff for each reviewer each button press).

Purhapes it would be better to have a seperate page that lists all the reviewed titles from a certain reviewer. (from best to worse, or in alphabetical ect).

okdokie.
I think I worked out in my head how to do it, but it will be a complex job.
Dynamicaly generated page using php at certain times, one for each reviewer.

I'll have to work more on my php skills, but I agree its probably nesscery.
cheers.

well.. "Fantasitic Four" is something that should result in a selection, because there are two F4 movies, you can't use the same name for both movies, or can you?

well, you can, but it would default to the second one entered in the reviewers xml at the moment

An easy fix I guess would be to have a ""review"" data that asks which you mean, then presents links to film one or two.

This would also let you review a franchise "overall", and also review individual entries in the franchise.

eg.
"Star Trek blah blah
sub cats;
-tos
-tng
-ds9
-voy
-ent
-nv"

For this to work I should change the review data from text to html, however.
Shouldnt be too much effort.

Ok, as per Morshem & Ell's suggestion, heres a prototype of a "reviewer list";

http://www.darkflame.co.uk/phptest/testhtml.html

Generated completely from a php script taking data from my XML file.
Should work in all browsers, if it does I'll work to intergrateing it, adding one for each reviewer, and having them auto-update daily.

The table it generates should be reorderable thanks to a lovely script I found here;
http://www.kryogenix.org/code/browse...table/#licence

v0.251;
** Fixed URL search error where it didnt convert "%20"'s to " " when searching.

Dude, noone will get their things rated when you misspell the search terms. Check "legend of zelda: twlight princess" (what's twlight?)

Already fixed with a few others, didnt upload the xml yet though.

Remember its just a test, my own reviews are very rushed as I was keen to get a large dataset to play with.
Once the site is out of alpha, I'll do up my reviews nicely and spell checked.

I have to re title most of my reviews anyway, so the official title for something is listed first, then the alternatives. (dosnt mater when searching, but for list generation, it should be done that way).

I got so much to do on all of it really

Updated;

http://www.darkflame.co.uk/JaveJunk/...ateometer.html

v0.3;

** Added new layer in html for links at the bottom.
** Added dynamicaly changing link to currently selected reviews list
** Created php script to make a new review list in html for each reviewer.
** Set this php as a cron job to run every day to update the list.
** Reorganised file/code directory structure to be a little more organised.

bugs;
-Just noticed some xml files still have some entry titles capatilised, which causes the some of the search links not to work.
-For some reason when clicking "back" to get to the main page it dosnt trigger the java? works if you hit refresh

updated;
www.darkflame.co.uk
(link from menu)

v0.35;

** Added new google-like start page. At the moment, this is fairly pointless, but in future I'll handel cookie's and logins and other options at this point.

** Improved rateings lister, now it correctly shows the "main" title of each review, rather then the last entered.

** Added "type" catagory onto items, it now shows in brackets on the page title after you looked something up.

** Fixed errors in cron job.

** Added HTML link support to review data. (both in site and to other sites, eg LBA linking to MBN).

** Fixed capatilisation errors once and for all. Hopefully its all finaly completely cass sensative

** Added new picture links on some articals, cleaned up quite a few of mine, added more reviews. (still mostly for testing reasons).

bugs;
-- Opera dodnt seem to refresh the page after drawing the controlls when first loading...if you put another window over it, or flip between tabs, it looks correct again.

** Fixed error with switching between reviewers for different items.
** Added a load more reviews

You should make it so that the text "Search for..." is automatically deleted when clicking there.

Good idea

Theres so many little things like that to work on.
And, of course, the big thing of having logins and letting people become reviewers and add reviews all from an online interface. (for that though, I need to find a secure way to do it with my host, which I'm not sure of yet).
