I like Bot13's logo, at least it's more pleasing to the eye than the current one.
Also websites with white background make me nauseous. (don't know why all massive traffic sites have them... Google Yahoo etc., it's horrible.)

How about something like this?

Doesn't that look nice? It's alcoholic, pleasing to look at, and just makes you want to visit it again and again.

I love it. And I think the same as Fishos and Bot13, you just need to make a more pleasant interface. (But I like your reviews, anyway )

That looks nice, gradient and layout-wise. But the color just looks too screaming to me.
Just my try on the frontpage:

The reason why everyone likes googles white is because
a) Its simple and fast loading
b) Its minimalist. Not fashionable, but not overwealming either.
I think search-based sites have to be a bit relaxing rather the dominating.

Yahoo isnt a good example though, there front page is still an utter mess.
As Bot says, readability is key.

I dont think you will find any colour other then white which most people can stand.
Well, maybe black.
But I bet in a vote white would still win.

Problem with any colour I think is some will prefer it over white, but then some will hate it more then white.
I think thats why no mainstream website I know has a (overly) coloured background. Everyone prefers a specific colour to white, but cant agree on what colour

Subtle colours may work.
Or, of course, I can take the co-out route and just let people choose the colour somewhere

===========

As regards to specifics;

Choas - That last one you posted screams "evil sci-fi company" to me for some reason
I think its the combo of the red and that center bit looking like an eye.

====

But what about the site itself
Does it all work for you ? bugs?
What would encourage/discourage you using it?
Any major missing features ?

I really am considering everything carefully at this point.
Theres a specific poll/thread on the Rateoholic forum for ideas, and I have already implimented a lot that used to be on the poll.

What's up with the "Over <number> reviews" counter at the bottom of the page? Doesn't it actually have the number of reviews there?

Thats odd, you should get a number.
At the moment it looks like "~ Over 211 Reviews ~" to me.

Its updated daily, hence why it wont be totaly accurate number as reviews could be written inbetween. So at the moment the code subtracts 1 from the totel reviews at midnight and writes that as the number (thus ensureing the statement is absolutely correct)

hmz..I could always write some sort of rounds down to the nearest 10.
That might look better?

btw, I am putting some suggestions in this poll as people make them;

Yes, I just wrote that because I didn't bother looking up the number again.

*links fixed*

Sorry about that.

Had to shuffle the directorys around as I'm trying to get the domains www.Rateoholic.co.uk and www.Rateoholic.com to point to the site.
(dont bother trying incidently, the domains do point to the site, but for some reason none of the search functions work when your at that domain..despite the fact they point to the exact same files)

There's heaps of bugs, they don't listen to the users when they report bugs or request features and they don't update it enough...

I'm a fan/supporter of SMF.

Well, I tried 3 different forums (not SMF though).
PhpBB is intergrated into my systems now, I'm not changing. (allthough eventualy the style/theme/features I'll adapt and add too till it probably looks like something else completely. I got a lot of ideas for how the website and forum can tie together ).

Cant say I noticed much bugs. v2 had a lot, but when I switched to 3 they pretty much all vanished. (and its now on 3.2, so theres obviously ones I didnt notice).

As for feature requests, it seems a lot of mods from v2 were built into v3, so I dont see that quite being true.
They seem helpfull enough when I request help on the forums.

Its far from perfect though, dont get me wrong.
Some of the admin controll panel stuff, particularly regarding custom user fields, is quite badly labled.

But still, if theres any specific problems with the Rateoholic site as it stands from a forum perspective, I'll fix it one way or another.

Should set up a temporary site and try it out. It's really good.
Compared to the code between SMF and phpBB, SMF is far more secure... Although I haven't checked 3.2 (only 3.1)

When you say 'integrated into your system', what do you mean?

The login system is shared, fields in your profile effecting how you view reviews and how your reviews look, the profile pops up is from the forum, and the number of reviews pop up in profiles.
----

Incidently;

Anyone that had trouble signing up, please try again now!
The Captcha I was using wasnt set for the new domains >_<
Really stupid of me, I know, but it should work now.

I just registered. When I wanted to log in for the first time, the forms already had my name & password in them. Great! But the 'name' form displays my email, not my username. So pressing 'log in' never works without first manually replacing that.

hmm..
I didnt code that, so I'm guessing when the field names are the same, your browser auto-fills it in.
So I just have to change the "name" field not to be called the same thing as the email field was. (if it was...but I cant see how else that would happen)

I know, I know
My whole sites fucked up due to some difference in php versions between my new host and my old one.
Their version of php dosnt seem to have any of the regex functions compiled into it.
(which is strange, as it says they support version 4/5, and its default on 4)

I have sent them a message about it, in the meantime, I guess I should put up a holding page.
-sigh-

I was just starting to get a few random people using rateoholic too, before all these problems

www.rateoholic.co.uk
Or www.rateoholic.com, if it takes your fancy.

Hopefully when your write reviews nothing goes wrong, its worked fine in my tests so it should be ok on this sever now.
Let me know if theres any problems
Theres also a mailing list now, but its more of a test then anything else, and I wont be sending much out except any really major updates.
