Jasiek - Alan Wake looks great indeed. Good to see its release is being firmed up, at one point it looked like it was in development hell.
I been following it for awhile, has some great ideas.

Quote:
That tech, if works as advertised, will make wiimote officially redundant tech.
Only if they can address the issues I mentioned.
I cant see it working for FPS games, for instance. Assumeing you could, say, make your hand into two figures and point it at the screen, and assumeing it could track that fine and extrapolate to an acccurate point for aiming.......how would you then move your charecter?

I see it definitely being great at games where the charecter has no spicific equipement being held (fighting,boxing, dancing, sycronised swimming) and maybe great at games where its purely about physics of movement of something your holding. (tennis, baseball, golf)....provided you can use a horsehold item to act as those bats/clubs, and provided it can track that other item in full 6d movement.

Overall good tech, badly demod. Nothing in that video actualy looked playable, save purhapes for using it as a interface controller to browse media.
Its also worth noting that was a concept video itself (look at the disclaimer).

As I said, it looks like the technology is a win for them, I'm just hoping they dont frell it up.
I want this, on nearly every first person perspective game as standard.
All current gen consoles could do this with very little cost, and this microsoft system could very definitely do it. So why not? It would put a "wow" factor into a lot of games.

Edit: That said, I imagine you would need to swap between 10 DVD's when playing it on 360
Not if they used this;

Red Steal 2 - Looking massively better then the first game.
Motion plus 1:1 Swordfighting + IR sensorbar FPS action looks perfect.
Graphical style is nice too.
(Video demo of controlls : http://www.gametrailers.com/player/50115.html)
Now, lets hope the games diverse and interesting enough to match, and not just repedative waves of enemys.

Sounding really great actualy.

Indeed, at one point, you can shoot a can into the air and the control works so well that you can easily keep the combo going into a four, five or six-shot chain.

the developer did demonstrate one such character enhancement to me and it's one that can also be seen in our exclusive direct-feed videos. It's called 'lift' and it's extremely cinematic and fun to perform. You charge your sword by holding A and B-trigger together and then swipe at enemies to literally knock them into the air, at which time you can choose to whip out your pistol and hammer bullets their way or soar into the air after them and continue slashing them all the way back down again

Natal (360) -
http://gamevideos.1up.com/video/id/24898
Much nicer demo of the tech then the video trailer/concept thing. Clearly shows the tracking in a game context where it works.

Theres also this thing;
http://gamevideos.1up.com/video/id/24900#comment_body
Which, frankly, I dont see anything impressive with at all, aside from a little voice recognition. Its just an animated avatar responding to a few actions.
(So it can see the colours of an image...
And that guy must have a really low scifi knowledge if he thinks this stuff "hasnt even been dreamed by scifi")

The Monkey Island news sound great. I currently don't know how to play the old games and a remake would be perfect. A new downloadable game for WiiWare fits as well.

Brütal Legend has always caught my eye because the spelling of the name is just so stupid. Why "brütal"? What's the "ü" doing there? The German word for "brutal" is "brutal" without an umlaut!

I have no idea, but how can you not love a game with such an outragious concept as a heavy-metal middle-earth like world ? :P

Well, if you got the old games in any form, ScummVM can play them.
Pretty much just a case of pointing it at the directory.
Ditto for ScummVM DS (Allthough you need the right version)

Natal. Finally a decent way to share cute dresses with my sisters.

(How does Microsoft manage to make awesome technology so silly?)

So far what I really wonder is whether it'll be able to detect smaller movements. In all the videos the movements are really over the top; I'd rather just use my fingers in most of these situations. Finger painting is much more impressive than throwing buckets around.

Of course, this initial step is a pretty big step already. Amazing stuff indeed.

DF, one way to solve the FPS problem would be... to use... an extra... controller. Yeah, I guess that kind of misses the point, but for FPS fans it'd be akin to having a Wii in the 360.

I agree absolutely.
Something like the nunchuck part of the wiimote/nunchuck combo would work fine.

Just a wireless analogue stick with a button is all you need really.
Then you could move and shoot at the same time.

I dont see it being possible with a standard 360 controller though. Holding it in one hand while you point your figure with the other isnt that comfortable.

Agreed, this is a real demo of the Natal tech;
http://gamevideos.1up.com/video/id/24898
Still pretty impressive.

As Medur says though, Id be interested in how far can it detect fine movements.

You could play a virtual piano with it?
Could it sense the pull of a trigger if your hand is like a gun shape?
Could it see where your looking onscreen?

Nintendo updates;

* New Mario game announced (Wii) - Multiplayer! O_O. 2D Marioworld style...ish...but multiplayer. You can jump/carry other players. 4 player.
Guess as 4 swords is to Zelda, this is to Mario.
Drop in./out multplayer co-op.

No confirmation as if its online though,.

WiiFit Plus - Mostly blah, but the into-the-screen mario mini game looks fun.

More wiimotion plus games - Grand Slam Tennis / Tiger Golf from EA, Virtual Tennis from Sega,
"every mistake you make reproduced ingame" :P
All out in a few weeks.

Not interested in sports games, but I can see how the tech is perfect for them. (well, anything where you hold anything...bat, ball, racket, basicaly).

Final Fantasy Crystal Barriers (Wii)- Looking very action/zeldaish indeed. Quite nice graphicaly, but soooooo corny voiceacting it hurts my ears.

Kingdom Hearts (DS) - Technicaly very good looking for the DS.

Mario & Lugia 3: Bowsers Inside Story (DS) - Been out in japan awhile under a slightly different name. Absolutely must get game for me, even if the second in the series was a let down, the first was insanely brillent to give it another chance.

oh, and

GOLDEN SUN DS FUCK YEAHHHYH

Holy shitz, this Natal thing looks so awesome! I'm surprised+impressed. Suppressed! (never mind)

Wow, you could actually be the character with this thing. You can actually learn Kung Fu with this thing. I'm so saving up for it.

(too bad it's owned by an evil corporation though)

More nintendo updates;

* Some (GTAish?) game for the DS. Looks like an action/racing/adventure game.
Ubisoft.

* DSi stuff. The new WarioWare game looks very interesting. You can completely make your own games for it, and share it.

+ DSi will be able to upload photos straight to facebook.

+ Another 3D Mario game for the Wii.

Mario Galaxy 2 basicaly with Yoshi.
Yoshi makes everything better.

-sigh- Its sure to be fantastic. But I still wish Nintendo didnt cave in.
Mario should be kept special, with no direct sequals imho. Its whats kept the franchise fresh for so long. New Game always meant shitloads of new ideas, not merely 1. Mario Galaxy had new gameplay ideas just about every level, this will be just the same, but with new levels.
Downloadable levels would have been soooo much better.

Metroid Project, Other "M" -
Team Ninja + Nintendo makeing a Metroid game O_o...looks more 2D in gameplay. But...wtf...Retro did a perfect trillogy of games, why someone else?
Must be different gameplay style me thinks.

But I want to know what Retro is upto

Shut up Darkflame, Super Mario Galaxy is awesome. The sequel can only be great as well. Either this, or no Mario game until the next console generation? What's the problem?

Its sure to be brillent.
But it wont be as great.
It wont be one of the highest ranking videogames of all time.

Its a cheap, quick way to make a good game....take an excelent game, add new levels and a few new stuff....sale it as a sequal.

Its the standard method of making game sequals. Almost all studios do it with their franchise's.
But Nintendo normaly keep their Mario and only release a new one when something major is different. When the gameplay is reinvented.
So it feels a little cheap to me that is. Nintendo lose their difference.

Post-nes, I meant.

But that said;
Lost Levels = cheap level pack of SMB1.
Mario 2 = A completely different game rebranded.
Mario1<>Mario3 = 5 year gap.

Id also argue the difference between Mario1 and 3 was *huge* purhapes the biggest in the series, sans the change to 3D.

Anyway...thats the end of Nintendos accouncements, allthough more game info will be comeing from Sony and on the E3 showfloor.

Pretty solid list of games thus far I think.

Nothing truely earth-shattering (save for Golden Sun 3), but lots of stuff that looks fun.
---

Incidently, I was thinking what games would work great with Natal, and one stood out sharpy;
Penumbra
The physics of that game is perfect. I always thought it would be great on the Wii, but the microsoft systems and even better fit.
Just need the charecter movement sorted.

Okay, my personal recap of the Nintendo conference:

They sure learned from last year's lame show. They showed the rather uninteresting games like Wii Fit Plus and Wii Sports Resort first, and then followed it up by some really cool games to look forward to. Granted, they didn't show a new Zelda or something completely revolutionary, but they definitely had some great games and the Metroid presentation in the end was fabulous. Remember when Wii Music was their "big" announcement last year? Everybody has already forgotten about that crap.

Buy list:
- Metroid Prime Trilogy
- Zelda: Spirit Tracks
- New Super Mario Bros. Wii
- Super Mario Galaxy 2
- Metroid: Other M

Yeah, I'm interested in all those games they announced at the conference
(even more so for Golden Sun DS)

But its actualy 3rd party stuff in the near future I'm interested in.
Conduit , Grinder and Red Steal 2 all look great to me.
And will be out considerably before any of that.

There does need to be follow up information from Nintendo though;

1. Is New Mario Wii online?
2. Status on games known about but not revealed yet. (mainly Pikmin3).
Just confirming "still being made" is enough for me.

Awesome. This game looks great and sounds great. I like the effects they pulled off when that giant beetle thing came through the treetops.

Yoshi ownz.

I think they missed a trick with this game. After talking about user-content at the conferance, this game seems a perfect fit for it.
Wouldnt it be great to not online have a multipklayer mario like that but also the ability to make your own levels? Just dragging/dropping existing elements would do.

I agree, I was looking for a level editor as well. Just for that downloadable DSi game? They should put it in this game, totally.
