I mean art programs like Macromedia Flash and Adobe Photoshop, I never look at anythings artwork anyway, I care about the music. I know I can drag it to the desktop and THEN to Photoshop, but its so much less productive and more annoying then it was before.

Well you can still click it, download the thing from every machine you get your hands on, and through proxy servers and then send it to software hell.

That way, you're not using their shit, and you're getting some buck out of them for the poor.

But yeah, the practice itself is disgusting.

I can't believe that's even legal. Don't we have anti-trust laws in the west?

It probably is illegal, but they probably get away with it by claiming "the money we use for donations is what we make from users using IE" or something like that. Actually that's not even a valid claim. Go ahead, sue Microsoft, see if they care.

Yeah, I'm downloading it a few times and deleteing.
Still fucked-up the lengths they are going to to get people to use it.

Good work mirroring, btw, seeing as the adverts not there anymore.

It's not about a fucking browser, it's about how people who have lots of money abuse their power and get away with it. And specifically this thread is about how they're giving up all dignity just struggling to keep every tiny shred of control they have over people, and by doing that they push their luck and might shoot themselves in the leg, which would be fun.

Monopolies like this sicken as much as the next person, as long as we have companies like microsoft, EA and other such things, quality of software is going to get shitter by the day.

But like other problems, bitching solves nothing, if you have such a problem with the shit they come up with that you just can't stand it anymore, I suggest you take some sort of real action. Atm, we're just emphasising how helpless we are to the situation, send adverts for rival companies, then see somoe fireworks fly .

I kind of laugh how this is turning into one of those "evil corporations doing evil corporationy things" thread when every company puts out advertisements that twist the truth to make themselves look better than the competition. That's the point of advertising - convincing the customer YOUR product is better, even when it may not be the case.

Now, does this border on quasi-legality? Yes, because most of those statements are probably untrue. But I'm just saying it isn't limited to the faceless corporations like Microsoft that people love to hate.

That's NOT the point of advertising. The fact some people think this is the point of advertising is not ok.

Let me be try to be clear about it, because many people obviously forgot it at some point in their lives: Making a living out of deceit is not cool. It's not any more ok than some other things you probably do consider to be wrong, like petty thievery. Just because a lot of people are doing it and it's legal due to whatever doesn't make it alright.

Edit: ...And that is why it's important we keep bitching about it, because once it's stop being said, that voice slowly disappears from our heads and we start to think it's ok and normal and just accept it.

If you're trying to attract patronage - i.e. get people to buy your product - you're trying to convince them that your product is worth buying.

I'm wondering what exactly you think advertising should be, if it's not trying to convince people to buy your product.

Yes... And you should be truthful and honest when you do that. I might seem to be overly naive, but I truly don't think I am.

That's not true. Sure I'm not likely to cause a major change by myself, but just look at the world around you - it's constantly changing, thanks to people who don't share your attitude.

Edit: that came off wrong, I didn't mean it to sound like a reply to the "bitch and protest" bit.

i heard from the IT assistant at tafe that there's a competition out there that if you're using IE8 and go onto some site, you can will $100,000 or something like that.

what i find stupid, is that why would they put $100,000 on the net?
it's just as bad as that ad?

why would they put a competition on just for you to use their browser?
i mean, i know that that's a bit of money, but if the browser was good enough, you wouldn't have to put a comp on to gain users.

Highlighting the bad points of company's is -always- good.

And saying "they all do it" is never an argument.
Especially when its to do with degrees of badness, and I've rarely seen other company's stoop this low.
Perhaps the fiasco with Sony inventing a fake movie critic to review their films. (or rather, to put quotes on posters). That was pretty low. Actually though, this is still lower.

Specificaly, they want more people using their websites to reclaw some of the revenue that google has been getting from adverts.
Browsers defaulting to their pages help with that.

The fact their browser is crippling the web dosnt seem to bother them.

Yes, and IE8 used to be a requirement of the competition, but they took that away.
(presumably the site had a client-check for IE8 on the winning page).

They took it away due to complaints.
Differences can be made by complaining.

That competition, mind you, didnt bother me so much anyway. A little of a dirty tactic, but no where near as bad as spreading lies about both your own browser and the competition + using a charity as they are doing.
