Aardvark - Internet based question-answering service.

Just found about about this web app which is designed to receive and disperse questions and answers to and from people, all in relation to certain knowledge areas users define.

Seems pretty usefull;
http://blogs.zdnet.com/weblife/?p=790

I have a hundred invites to give away if anyone else wants to try it;

The navigation sucks. How can I access other people's profiles or search for questions? Were you able to find my question?

It seems smart how it auto-selects the catagory for questions asked. (just asked a physics query I didnt know the answer too, and it recognised it was physics).
--
I think it should have asked me itself....if I know the subject your asking for. Or maybe it found someone more appropriate.
It seems to only ask friend-of-a-friend for now, so probably we wont get decent answers till the degrees of separation effect kicks in a bit.

I'm also supposed to accept it chat request on gmail...but I havnt got it yet.
The idea seems to be you dont have to be logged on to "be connected" to this knowledge network.

It really should be feeding back the answers into a database though.(If it doesn't already). At least, answers people flag as being useful. Dont want the same 10 people asking the same guy the same question do we? We get enough of that sort of stuff as it is.
Also, not sure of the necessity of the friend-of-a-friend stuff though. Seems that miss's a lot of potential expert<>expert connections. (for example, one scientist helping another across the globe)

The idea of "everyone is an expert in something" is one that really resonates with me, and I feel web is an ideal medium to take advantage of it.

The next step, perhaps, is to combine it with something like;
http://a.freshbrain.com/solvr/

So that big questions can be solved collaboratively.

And can't you search for questions other people asked? (like answers.yahoo.com)
When a question is answered only the person who asked it is able to view the answer? That seems extremely inefficient.

Clean user interface is good. Over simplified user interface is... insulting.

Wowz! I actually got an answer!

Here, since I can't link to the page:

Quote:
You:
Does anyone know how to stream all of my PC's input and output over the internet, so that I can harness the power of a powerful computer from a far away laptop?

David:
If you're talking about controlling another computer remotely (your laptop providing the inputs to your desktop), then look into VNC. Windows supports Remote Desktop (free from Microsoft's site or bundled with Office) and Mac OSX has Screen Sharing built in which can be accessed with the native app or Chicken of the VNC (http://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/).

Indeed.
They are just missing a middle step really.
It *does* store the answers it seems, but only in your personal area.

They need to adjust it to auto-display existing answers that may be matchs, and only if theres none (or the user rejects them), does it go searching for someone.

To help keep things tidy though, when you get an answer, purhapes only ones you ranked as usefull go back into the database.

This would be a minor thing for them to add really, lots of existing company websites have this sort of thing if you contact them for help...first it checks if you even need to speak to a real person.

I got anwere too....two of them!
But they are completely contradictory

I asked;
Quote:
Does anyone know if the mass increase due to objects traveling at speeds approaching c, also effects its gravitational force? (ie, an object traveling very quickly relatively to another....is it more attracted to it?)
I got;

Quote:
João:
yes it does
Quote:
Spike:
no, the mass increase with relativistic velocities only affects its momentum--gravitation is unaffected

Still, pretty cool though.
I see what others say. Maybe if there was a way to see if someone was a physics professor....

==

Incidently, you can also controll a PC with a DS;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-lv-ABTn_s
:P
I used that was an expirement. Works fine as long as all you need is a mouse and 3 frames per second refresh :P

Ive been asking a lot of questions, getting some pretty usefull response's in some cases.

This app seems...even in its prototype form...rather a "killer app" for the internet itself.

This is a bit embarrassing, but I can't find a way to ask a new question. Did they change the design? I clicked on every link and couldn't find it.

Don't you just send it an IM?

To be honest I'm struggling to think of any questions to ask the thing.

yes.
But for some reason it isnt as slick as in gmail/jabber/msn/whatever.

You need to goto the homepage, then search for the topic it falls under, then ask the question.

I've only been using it in gmail chat mostly, works well there.
Their site itself isnt much yet really.

But...

Quote:

Thats the thing...aside from my first question about lightspeed, all my other questions have been stuff I needed to know O_o

Its so usefull. When working, or when I get a query that isnt obviously googlable, I dump it in the chat box, and 5 mins later I get an answer.

Now if only this site and Solvr (http://www.a.freshbrain.com/solvr/) would join forces.

Then youd be able to link a selection of experts together and have a logical discussion framework to get an answer.

Ive been asking an answering all sorts of questions, getting a lot of actualy usefull stuff out of this.

Does anyone remember that internet video with the tagline "The Machine Is Us" ?

Its never felt more true then with this app to me. I feel like I'm part of some
social-hivemind thing, with people helping eachother for no other reason then its nice too.

Lol, it reminds me of that Israeli short movie that frequently aired on TV to promote the Internet when it just started out. There were some teenagers who got to their computer and launched a program called "Internet", and the computer screen turned into a robotic face thing that spoke with them and answered all their questions.

Holy shit. That's fucking incredible.

This is nice. Anyone else got a mail with 'compliments for responding to so many questions and being so active straight away' ?
Aardvark just feels really personal, it's great!

Yeah, I got that after awhile. If you help enough they ask you to give feedback on what they are doing right/wrong too.

I answered a few things. Mostly trival ("Is Tron a good film?", "Is there any TV show similar to Dead Like Me? I really enjoy it.")
