I certainly plan to print Twinsen at some time. Needs to be cleaned up though.
Could take a bit of work to really look nice.

A pen though is an interesting idea. Might do that. Have to break a few apart and see what bits I need. I could just make a casing for a standard biro tube/head, that would be the easiest.
But, on the other hand, a fancy fountain pen would be nicer.

Ooh, I was wondering why you put sexual advert in there, I just noticed there is a printed upper-body among them

I had good fun making a lot of stupid adverts for that site.

Anyway, been doing some more doddling with the printer.

Made this box;

I am particularly pleased I managed to create a working hinge. The box prints sideways, but comes out all in one piece.

Probably going to do a few design variations, maybe make a special one to keep my 3DS/DS games in.

Atresica painted one too;

Thanks

Made it in 3dsmax. Could be done with almost any bit of software though - the design was just box modeling and booleans.
It did, however, take quite a few versions to get the hinge right. The printer can only do overhangs of about 45 degree's. So the hinge design couldn't just be a simple hole and cylinder.

I would've been happy to be able to make this kind of stuff...
I never was to good at making objects with my hands.

The thing is, after you model the object you want to create, it takes only a few minutes to create a new one, while it can take hours, if not days, to create something with your hands. He is just not creating complex things at the moment, but I've heard of 3d Printers being used to create car pieces and things like that

You wouldn't make a hinge in a woodwork class, youd use a store bought one.
Making a hinge would put you at a very high level skill.
Also, carving out relief patterns in a model like that would be, again, a very high level of skill. Certainly beyond any woodwork class I ever did.

That said, yes, you could make a better thing in wood. Youd construct the basic shape by hand, use store bought hinges, and then probably use a CNC machine to engrave a pattern on the front.

If you got a cnc at your house, and your willing to put in the work, thats fantastic! Post the results

In the meantime, I'll 3d print little box variants quite happy.

Indeed, once you put the effort in to make something (or someone else has), its no effort at all to print more.

As for complexity, you can do stuff like chainmail, cogs, gear mechanisms without any problems.
The best example is these awesome things;

(utterly incredible stuff imho)

Anyway, next up I am probably going to make slight variants so I can keep 3DS and SD cards in there.

That robot is fantastic !

I heard that 3D printers are considered by some as dangerous for health, due to all the dust created while printing, do you know anything about that ?

Yes. Current research shows its as dangerous as frying bacon constantly.
Which is more dangerous then second-hand smoking.
So you really should have a well ventilated room.

We have our printer upstairs, so we arnt even in the room when its printing most of the time.

Thats just the mini 3d printed version. The designer has made massive beach-walking versions.
Utterly crazy stuff.

sure hinges are easy to make. i mean i've crafted them myself.
How? I assume you used metal, not wood.
We got as far as learning to use a "tap" to make a screw, and we did a tiny bit of welding. But we never did anything as interesting as a hinge

oh man, these things are dangerous as well? i'll take 5
Yes, they are slow, but they will take over the world if we let them!

This is the form the robot uprising will take!
Wind-powered passive walking robots!

Everyone will think they are cute/clever till theres 50foot tall ones crushing us!

Ka-Bump!

A few new things we printed.

Heres another fantastic model by Atresica:

(the chin looks a bit dodgy because we had to use a "snap off" support and it didnt snap of cleanly)

And because I am 8, here's a few spaceships I modeled:

(The last one, incidentally, I modeled in secondary school, and called it "GTS Darkflame" [/origins of my pseudonym] )

Here's a ufo thing I made that looks like a juicer:

(This is nice from a technical perspective, as the printer handled the overhang perfectly without needing supports)

And here's a mystery prop for the next episode (yes, any decade now!)

(can you guess what it is yet?)

Also, if anyone else has a 3d printer by now, we also uploaded our box design here;
