I thought that was pretty cool.
Not exactly high-tech though, hence a thread of its own.

That was awesome

It's weird how there's no gravity but stuff moves normally when he touches them.

So awesome ! Hurdy-Gurdy in space shouldn't work that well though, we use gravity to make the keys fall back in place. And we have to tune it often even on earth

It's a guitar in space, not a space guitar. But, yeah, nice.

It's not weird how they move, as the objects are weightless. Any touch at all can cause them to move, and there is only microgravity, which is too weak to get the objects to fall (read: less than the weight of air).

Well, it could be argued technically they are all in freefall all the time, but the earth beneath them falls at the same rate due to the curvature so their net distance never changes much.
So everything effectively only seems like its weightless because of their constant acceleration relative to eachother.....but then, due to the equivalence principle theres no way of telling that apart from lack of gravity anyway.

I'm just curious. Could that be the first live music played outside of earth?

I'm urged to ask you whether you know what would happen if he had put on his suit and went outside for playing on his guitar?

That would be fun.

I think he meant that it's weird for the string to move and resonate the same way as they do with gravity.

But the strings and music in general has nothing to do with gravity, it has with air (or a different medium) though. It is the vibration that makes music, not gravity. In space there's no real gravity, but inside there's still air to use for the strings.

Different instruments might sound differently though, I wouldn't know about that. As long there is air to breath, they should sound and work the same, albeit less strainful on the mussles.

Well yes, but take for example an accordion, gravity seems to be somewhat used to lower that left-hand part, and as I said a hurdy-gurdy in space wouldn't work that well as gravity is used to make the keys fall back in place after getting pressed.

So you can't play the piano in space either?

I knew that, but we were talking about this normal guitar, not about some other kind that might also have strings
Some mechanics do require gravity, but they are irrelevant to this guitar and hence it's not "weird for the string to move and resonate".

You probably have to retrain your muscle memory a bit though.

Thinking about it, I am surprised he has a guitar up there - theres strict size and weight limits to what the crew can bring personally. Guess either he got special permission, or put all his other stuff inside the guitar.
Or he carved it from space trees.

The piano uses gravity for the hammers to fall back ?

Yes.

Well, I don't know much about pianos, but as far as I know, wherever a hammer's involved in a mechanic, it doesn't work without gravity. Nonmechanical systems use pistons instead of hammers. Unless I'm very mistaken, or if you can show me a piano that works on gas, the piano requires gravity to work
