Prototype Airship

Heres a rough design for an airship, done in Truespace.
These will be whats dropping the bombs on rebelion island.
(I thought planes would be too boring).
Comments for improvements please....

Great

suggestions :
I would aslso like it smoother in the corners, and really more armoured : the underside has metal plates, and there is no holes : the ballon is closer from the soldier's shuttle, and like that there are dark glasses all around that protect pilots.
Cause there it doesnt look dangerous, pilots can be killed by snipers, whereas if pilots are invisible and if all the underside is over-armoured, it'll really become a battle masster. And it will allow one of the best landing scenes : an airship whom pilot is killed "in blind " by the leader sniper of the group, you'll seee...

Cool cool cool. I agree that planes wouldn't have seemed right. The airship seems more LBAish. And I wouldn't want to see it too bulked up, otherwise it would seem odd that it hasn't just completely wiped out the rebellion.

The balloon will be more natural shape when done in Max, and I'll put ropes in a "cross" shape accross it too.
I'll add some armour plates around the balloon, but I don't want to overarmour it.
I'd like to leave the base quite "clean", for the camera to get a good view. Remember, this thing will be quite high up.
The angle would make it quite hard to snipers to hit things between the base and the balloon.
Of course, the balloon is an easy targert, so that will be protected with plates of some kind

the ballon must be invulnerable for ground rebels, but it would be a catapulted rebel that would snipe it in real time, about at its height...

Why do you continue to work out of Max ??? It's a horrible thing to convert it later ! I dont know if I'll manage to retexture Bu's temple, I dont know weell mapping coordinate s and stuff...

It looks really cool! Maybe you could add a short prow to the front? And make the balloon solid instead of see-through (I know that is a minor detail - and possibly irrelevent if you are retexing in Max) with a FF logo on

the_angry_ - I'll make the balloon much less transparent, but I'll probably leave it a little bit.
I'll certainly add the FF logo.
Not sure about the prow, I'll expirment a bit.

Nice one T.A.

The teleportation pods are exactly how I imagined them, but the balloon looks a bit "rag-tag" for a FunFrock creation. He's more geared to a pure "industrialist" vision, so I'd have the balloon look like that a a German Zepplin's, and suported by girders, and have the cabin enclosed.

(I like the communication equipment as well!)

Regards,
Morden

Thx, the teleporters and communication equipment was, of course, nicked
I will make it more industrial, reinforced balloon ect.
But I still like it open, its much smaller then a zeplin, so I think an enclosed space wouldn't be very neat.
(remember, its very high, so snipers can't easily attack from the sides).

But an open box prevents from low altitude attacks, and it ruins all my script fort the attack on Hamalai : the ballon must attack the rebel forces and really threaten them, by throwing bombs just over them......

Couldnt you make big panes of armoured dark glass all around the box, like that soldiers have a good wiev and it's harder again for the sniper that must kill the pilot when throw in the sky by a catapult ?

Why does it have to be so low down
I don't get it.
Your idea can still work, the rebels don't have to be level with the pilot to shoot.
The extra hieght could be just enough to give them a line of sight.
--
Also, with the height, you can get extreamly nice camera views of the bombs dropping, and the sky ect.

A bomber cant have enough accuracy to destroy quick boats, if it doesnt fly low down...
And to me those airships had to be well armoured, to resist to sniper bullets and DCA missiles....this had really to be a great danger, and when they run the risk to be all destroyed, the rebels are saved only by killing the pilot by snipe whereas the airship flies low down, and so crashes against an iceberg.

There, the arship is pretty, but can be too easily destroyed, and the pilots arent enough protected : huge panes of dark glass would be a serious handicap for the sniper.

Do you know Warcraft II 's orc airships ? That's a little like that this one should be...

But they were over the island in the game, not the sea.
-
And they are well enough protected if it flies high enough.
The higher it flys, the less surface area is visable from snipers on the ground.
The nearer to the same level the snipers are, the easier it is for them to shoot.
So therefor, they should start at very different heights, and the snipers have to get higher in order to get a line of sight.

Pretty cool... You said you made that thing in school?! Well... you seem to have plenty of time...
And a little off-topic (in this thread at least) question: What models are still needed? I'm asking 'cuz I got a 3ds max... and learned to work a little with that recently... Heh, I'm always late...

DF - it destroys all my plans, some guys of the forum thought like me of the rebel expedition attacked by an airship while arriving to the Hamalayi. It would be a great panic scene, while the Hamalayi canons begin to shot on boats, and an anthology air-sea battle.......or make for that a different airship, more able to attack moving targets.

Furthermore, both versions would need helixes, to go fastly forward ...
