Maybe they dont allow 1GB worth or something.

Or maybe thats why they are floating themselfs on the stock market.

Depends what diffinition you are looking at.
Sometimes 1GB is defined as *exactly* 1000MB.
Sometimes is 1024.
Dosnt seem to be a proper established definition.

1GB = 2^10 MB = 1024MB.
1GBit = 1000MB.

1000MB are only referred to as 1GB by hdd manufacturers, in order to make a hdd look bigger than it really is (seriously. There's no reason why 1GB would be anything else than 1024MB, yet hdd manufacturers tend to consider it 1000MB. The difference between xB and xBit is well stablished)

But anyway, Gmail looks very nice indeed. It's pitty I would never use 1GBit, so I don't really need anything like that. I believe it's available, atm, for Blogger users only?

No, a Bit is 8 times less then a byte, so 1Gb=128MB
(1Gb/Gbit is being used a lot by console makers...)
==
Also, theres a good reason for a GB to equal 1000, its because the the route of the word
That is, giga was used in science a lot, just like mega, peta ect.

On the other hand...going further back giga just means "giant"...so it coould really be anything

What is so exciting about GMail though? From the screenshots I've seen, it's just a bog standard webmail application. Sure, you get 1Gb of storage - but who really *needs* that much? (I use less than 5Mb on all my email accounts put together). Unless you keep every single email anyone ever sends you then there's not much to be gained by having such a large amount of storage - it's just a cheap marketing gimmick that Google know no other email provider is likely to match.

Thats the precise idea, to keep every single email.
The idea is you have a history of every conversation you ever have...when you have a series of emails and replys it arranges it very much like a forum...very neatly.

Simerlar, like a forum, you get a quick-reply box like what im typing in now...very handy.

Lightwing ~ I think it was because i was a blogger user. But it might have been because i emailed them awhile ago..or i was on their mailing list for there newsgroupd.

What if you want to delete emails though? Besides, it would clutter up my inbox pretty fast if I kept every single email I have ever received.

you can delete, but the point is you dont need too.
--
And no, it dosnt get cluttered, because it organise's it in a completely different (and much better) way to other emails.

When you have a series of emails, (ie, you send one, get a reply, reply to the reply ect) it stakes them in a tagged list...you have a record of the whole conversation.
Its quite like a forum in that way..moreso with the quick reply box.

Also, you can asign custom labels to each email.
They kinda act like folders, but better...because it dosnt "move" the mail...it stays in the context of the conversation.

cheap marketing gimick, 1GB....sure...yes...right...
[/falls on the flour in histerics]

If you read what google say, the idea is you dont use it like other emails, it saves you from having to delete mail, and it saves you most of the bother of organising it.
Oh, yes, and you can search your email a lot better too.

Critise's it all you want, but its better on so many levels its not worth dicusing untill you use it yourself.
===

As for the others, sorry cant invite people yet
I keep checking.
