Cheap as in tacky, not cheap as in low-cost (although Google can probably afford to buy huge amounts of disk space nowadays anyway, with it being relatively cheap).

If you read what google say, the idea is you dont use it like other emails, it saves you from having to delete mail, and it saves you most of the bother of organising it.

Oh, yes, and you can search your email a lot better too.
I don't need to search my email though - because I don't keep 500Mb worth of archives.

Your clearly too stuck in a rut to understand.
1GB * Number of possible users = Huge amount of HD space = Huge cost to them.
I wouldnt be supprised if thats why they have gone on the stock market...to pay for the HD.
It is, put simple better.
I dont care if you dont believe that, its like saying you dont believe in gravity

Not untill people start exchanging files on it ^_^

But i mean, look at this:

Hotmail ~ 4MB free, £14.99 a year for 10MB
Yahoo ~ 6MB of storage, offering 100MB for $49.99

Put simply, gmail will end this sort of priceing.
There is no way they will be able to justify those price's for long...

Stuck in a rut? Because I'd never need 1Gb of email space? Don't be ridiculous.

Better than what? I can't see how an extra 990Mb of disk space is sooo much better if I'm not going to use it - and I'm going to be paying for this wasted space somewhere (whether it be more ads or via a subscription). Why pay for something you don't need?

Your stuck in a rut because your argueing pointlessly, you dont have to use the space up, its just there if you need it.

Better then what?
Better then any other free email i have seen anywhere.
...i have listed many reasons why its better, its not all about space.

And, incidently, other sites make you pay for far less space and you get advertising still. (hotmail, being the main one)

The fact that you never need 1GB of space isnt the point, the fact that you dont have to keep clearing your email is.
Gmails mear existance will kick other email providers into given a better service.
You think Yahoo and Hotmail can possible keep their horrible systems?
I dought it.

Dude, if you think that you won't ever need 1GB, who forces you to use gMail? Just don't sign up to it.

I know a russian mail which gives 50MB. Cool also:

Of course they can - Hotmail is associated with email (whether that's a good or bad reason is another matter) and I don't think even Google can break that association, at least not for the foreseeable future. Most people will stick with what they are used to for a number of reasons, not least that they can't be bothered to tell everyone that they have changed their email address. Perhaps Hotmail/Yahoo will be forced to give a few more features, but I doubt it. Besides, Google hasn't even launched GMail yet - it's still invite-only. So I think the demise of Hotmail is some way off.

Also, I think Google will find itself in trouble in the next 12-18 months, both from competitors and share holders (who will demand a decent return on their investment). Don't forget that Microsoft has sufficient ($50 billion) cash reserves to either buy or compete with Google on a massive scale, and Yahoo is also developing its own software.

Whatever happens, GMail isn't going to be the "must have" webmail solution for a while yet.

google hasnt got any shareholders yet, any it does get would be post gmail launch. (which is, err..now)

Quote:
Of course they can
So thats why Yahoo and countless others have suddenly and rappidly increased the amount of storage they offer?
Google has forced everyone to offer more, for much much less. Google has/will change email forever, even if you never use it you will see its effects.
Thanks to google, you simply cant get away with chargeing for email space now.

I know well what that means, but you might want the check around before saying such.
Hotmail is just about the only email now that hasnt announced a large increase in space now.
I would get a load of links pointing to news articals about all these firms increaseing space, but i cant be bothered.
Check yourself.

Please, dont just assume i am wrong for the sake of it.
These firms havnt just suddenly decided to provide a better service, they have been forced too because of google.
Google has "raised the bar", as it were.

I hope I'm in TOP of that list after my flower promise on page 1!

Shadango exists no more. They didn't have the money to keep up, but it was the best e-mail account I ever had.
