Congratulations SpaceShipOne

A few hours ago, the worlds first manned commercial spaceship made it to the edge of space and returned safely.

When did we hear about that spaceship go off to space? It's so weird I haven't heard of it.

God i hope not.
It is the Co-founder, the one know one knows the name off.

To be honest, I think he is jelous bill is so famous and he isnt, so he wants to become famous for a different reason

Lets hope the second flight goes ok, and they claim the X-prize.
It wont be the end of the race, of course...theres talk of further prizes for hiegher and longer.

And of course, the *real* precise is the commercialisation of space itself.

Well until there's something actually 'out there' then space travel is only for rich day trippers. Plus the Gs must pull lesser physiques apart!

lol.

Well, what is out there is a few things that are quite valuable for companys
1. A unique evnrioment (aka, near zero g).
There is an abosolutely huge list of projects and expirments waiting to be carried out in space. Only a select few make it up there at the moment, and normaly they have to exist in small boxs.
The depend for zero-g enviroment for projects is big, either companys will want to use it to carry out their own research...or they will rent space on flights to research labs and universitys.

Materials, Plants, Crystals...even Fire...everything behaves quite differently in zero g

2. A good view.
Not really a joke there, as mapping/anylising the earth below is always in demand.

3. Construction.
More long term, but getting payloads into orbit will let companys construct satalites, telescopes ect in space.

4. Space.
The very emptyness of space makes it a resource in itself.
Where else could you thoerticaly build a 5 sqare kilometer solar panel?
Or a might solar sail?
Or a cluster of telescopes that could be extended into the hundreds...

The potential for a lot of money is there, its just a mater of companys finding the right ways to extract it

True indeed. It will be interesting to see how all this pans out over the next 10 years or so.

Yes.

Very interesting indeed. This will certainly revolutionise space travel, and make it more of a reality for the average person.

Indeed.

Apparently there was a few minor problems with SS1's flight, that they are examining now.
No news yet on when they are attempting the 2 flight requirement for winning the X-prize.

This, combined with the other major success of NASA's scramjet really means spacetravel is takening a step up.

The edge of the Thermosphere, where temperatures increase with altitude, as opposed to falling (when you get higher, it gets colder to a point, then warmer again..)
Although, I guess the real edge of space is the exosphere, lying between the thermosphere and extending thousands of kilometers into space.... the outermost layer of the atmosphere, basically .

Phew, all that learning not completely in vain

This reminds me of the first manned mission to space. I heard the guys where half tossing dice on this one and that they were chancing a malfunction. On TV they started saying, "Well we found some major problems that we will be looking into."

After seeing a programme on that, I would actually say they most likely were not.

I don't know, I'm still pretty divided on what to believe. If they could do it then, why not do it now?

Well they went through nearly every major quibble with the landing itself with someone who provided theories which seemed to disprove each and every nay-saying claim. On the other hand, you had those saying the landings were fake living in caravans in the middle of the desert, and one living in a cat sanctuary. I know which one looked more credible to me.

Why go there?
The moon has been confirmed of having no life or natural resources.
We can now leave the moon alone.

The Moon Landing happened, thats pretty much indisputeable.

There is a tiny chance the film footage was faked, for a "just in case" purpose, but that too is unlikely, imo.

For those that think its fake:

Goes over most of the so called "evidence"

Yeah, and it also costs *a bit* money to go there...

Just a bit. Why they went in the first place beats me...

(actually, it doesn't).

Anyway, am I the only person who knew about it before reading this thread?

Hey, if I had a change to fly to the moon right now I'd do it.

The moon....it's so...."out of this world"
I mean, the idea of not being on earth is really cool ^^
Plus the gravity is like, 1/6 G if i remember correctly...wicked

Well, because people are planning missions to Mars. The quicker some form of moon depot or base is set up ,the quicker and cheaper it will be o go to Mars. That way, you don't need to escape the Earth's gravity to get to Mars, you can simply loop around, and get there much cheaper.

Also, because, lets face it, 100 years from now we'll be living/working/whatever on the moon, if not Mars/Jupiters moon's. The theory for space travel is definately there, we just need funding, and less cynicism.
