Game Stars Live

Just a quick note to people in England/London.

I went to a rather good games exhitbition the other day.
£12 entry, Excel exhibition center neat canning town.
(On the DLR train line).

Its basicaly a showcase of new games and stuff comeing out over the next year or so.
I had a nice go on Metroid Prime 2 and the new GBA Zelda game, both looked great games.

Queues were fairly short for everything except Halo2.
There was some interesting new devices about too, includeing some nifty movement sensor controlls.

There was also a proto-type Gizmondo device.
£230 = Handheld Windows CE based gameing device, GPS, SMS, Sim Card, 1 Megapixal Camera and 64MB MP3 storage.
Oh, and it can play Windows Media Player 9 files.
And yes, i did say GPS.
If this device does all they say it can, and for the price they say, it deserves to be a success. Unlike the nokia N-gage, its clearly designed for gameing first. (SNES-style pad layout)

The main stage area of the show was a bit naff...basicaly hours apon hours of getting people to scream and occasionaly free stuff being chucked into the crowd.

I strongly recomend going to the show, it ends today in london...so if you want to go *go now*.
Tickets can be got at the door, and the exhibition is litarly at the station, so its easy to get too.

The mentioning of the legend or Sendell has since been forbidden by Dr. FunFrock. Meanwhile... a young quetch named Twinsen has been having strange dreams...

Hm... Yes, yes it was...

Well, sounds fun.. .But of what I've heard of the Gizmondo device(s), it probably won't be all that good. Trying to do that many things is not a very good idea, and normally leads towards an instable product (IMO).

true, but £230 for a GPS system alone is good value

Also, the guy at the stand (who helped develop the system) told me it wont be a phone, because "The designs of a mobile phone simply arnt compatiable with the design of a hand held gameing system"
(there was an N-Gage stand near by )

I cant really see sony justfying £300 for the PSP when it does a lot less (even processor wise).

Lol @ the NGage thing...

Hmm... Well, the PSP is uspposed to be able to view DVDs (UMDs), as well as play games. Also, I don't know how Windows CE-based Games stack up against PSP OS' native games...

Do you honestly think films would be released on UMDs?
How much music is released on mini-disk?

No, they are both just as good at playing media.
The PSP has a custom-disk based format, the Gizomonda takes SD cards and has a 64MB internal memory.

While the UMDs can certainly story more, movies on the PSP have a hard 2 hour max length. (official sony PSP battary life when using the disks).
So thats no Lord of the Rings then.

The Gizomonda however, can effectively play any file your PC can, and its just as capable of playing movies from SD cards.

Even Nintendos DS system will be able to play movies, in fact.

The existing Gameboy can play 4 eppisodes of a cartoon, on a Cartridge for $20.
The DS card's size is about 8 times bigger minimum, and with improved compression due to a higher spec system that should easily make movies possible

So i dont get what sony is boasting about.
All the new systems can play movies.

What sony should have done is make the PSP take real DVDs...that would certainly have made it sale good. (ie, a portable PS2 literarly)
Obviously it would need to be bigger, but im sure it would be more marketable.

Its not like sony has ever managed to get there own media format established before.

As for games, yes, the psp will be stronger at launch.
(70 games are being made and 99 developers have kits, allthough Nintendo have 120 games by 100 developers)

However, if it sales well, the gizmonda could easily have that ammount, and being windows-based makes porting easy.
Also, im sure there will be some pretty cool games/features using the GPS system ^_^
