The X-Prize: Important Histortric Space Flight Today!! Yes, its worth 2 "!" !

Seeing as the tv news is a bit rubbish at staying up to date, I thought i better start a thread.

The first major attempt to win the X-prize will start, Tommorow, 29th of september.
As expected it will be done by the team developing "SpaceShipOne", privitely paided for by Mircrosofts co-founder.

http://www.scaled.com/

In order to win the prize money, they have to have a successfull flight tommorow, and then again with two weeks.

If successfull this will pave the way for "Virgin Galaxtic" to start saleing tickets withen 3 years, starting at £100,000 with the money earnt plugged back into R&D to get the price lower.

IMO, this is a perfect example of what huge mega-corps should be doing.
Starting completely new industarys.

Flight #1 will be streamed live:

For those that still dont know what the X-prize is;

I want to fly to space with Virgin Galactic!! ME ME ME!

Now all I need is 200,000$.

Anyway, it's cool that the company who made the old Disney games (Aladdin etc.) is the first company in the world which makes commercial space flights!

Well, Virgin actualy works by using its name and helping to organise stuff.
The games, record store, hollydays, ect are all run by different people.
A bit like a franchise.

Either way this is great news and its sad so few people see how important it is.
Good luck to them
(and that goes for the other X-prize compeditors too)

All this stuff is pretty cool, and I'm sure that it'll greatly help develop space technology etc. but it'll be decades before enough R&D has passed before most people could begin to hope to pay for a trip. Besides I'm not entirely sure I like the idea of huge corporations expanding out into space based industries. Sure there might be an influx of technology at the start but in the long term...

In the long term what? The US Govement wont have a monopoly over the skys?

Its not like companys can polute space or something, we are just a pin prick in the abyis.
The sad fact is, no govenment has the foresight to see that space travel is nesscerity for the long term servial of the human race. They are only interested in extreamly short term goals, using space for sad military purposes.
They leave all the big problems for future generations to start working on.

Companys will exploit space to get money, but at least the technology developed will help in the long term.

In the long term the novelty of space might just wear thin, people lose interest, profits fall, development halts. Perhaps, I dunno. I'm not worried about pollution but there could be other problems like cost cutting on safety and other vital areas may have drastic consequences. There could also be othe unforseeable problems

I know that governments spending money on non-militaristic applications on space is not a likely scenario, but it could happen if they wanted to use it as a political distraction perhaps. After all governments make enough mistakes, so it might be a vaguely slim possibility. Also what if the chineese were to start developing their program? It could potentially start a second space race maybe. Though that would probably end quickly and development would slow to a crawl again.

I know I'm just being cynical but I have a strong sense of foreboding when I think of this.

HELL YEAH!!!!

Space Ship One landed just a few seconds ago, safe and sound.
Dispite some rolls mid-flight, it glided down safely.

Congradulations SS1, not many people here seem to care, but congradulations anyway.
=====

As for Commericial stuff being a worry about safty.
Safty is always a worry with advanced tech...i dont see what difference it makes if its govement or commercial.
NASA hasnt exactly got the best safty record, cost cutting normaly being to blame.

Pretty amazing, that's all I have to say. Scary to think back on what we could do 100 years ago. We've went from staying in flight for 30 seconds on wooden airplanes, to space-ships. What's next, warp speed? ^_^

Quite.
I think the next major step would be a half-way space elivator to winch SS1 up to the ISS orbit.

Im placeing my bets simply on some huge thing we have overlooked about light speed being realised, so we dont need warp drive

Yes, watched it live streamed from my PC to our TV.
Luckly i seem to live with people that care about this stuff

It actualy looks a little like Farscape1 to me :

(PeaceKeeper Wars ~ US Sci-Fi 17oct...any chance to advertise? hell yeah!)

Anyway, congradulations Burt Rutan& Brian Binnie
dont spend the $10,000,000 all at once

And congradulations to Richard Branson too, $110,000 is a little steep for me, but as soon you get your costs down, (say, 10years?) I'll be sure to fly
Virgin Galatic
(ps, can you name one of your fleet Farscape1? go on...please...)
