Updated windows build... and dammit fiddled with it till 5am!! :/ With new awesome ponytail physics, and two quality levels, and a higher fps limit at Ultra qualiy (was 30, is 60). Low quality level is capped at 30 fps without vsync. And maaaybe overall smoother movement as I cleaned up my entire character controller script and split it into modules (input, motor, controller, etc). And here's the updated linux build: https://we.tl/Mf4bZQcxyg EDIT: There may be some jerky motion on the hair in ultra quality, and a slight "drop drop drop" thing when going up and down the stairs. I'm stubborn and don't want to use a ramp there but an actual step height, and I smoothed it out while it was at 30 fps, but now it's back, lol ![]()

Pickups!
EDIT: Now with pickup sounds! https://we.tl/6OdZbjLCAz ![]() Here's an album with some progress shots: https://imgur.com/a/smnY3LD There's a fully functioning inventory system (no UI right now). Consumable items are added into the inventory (like hearts, keys, money, magic) There's a key in a jar by the cellar door, and hearts in a flower pot. Keys don't disappear after a time, but hearts are on a 10 second timer - both will bounce around when you're full (health is set to 45/50, keys at 0/99). Pressing F1 and F2 blends between the two modes while walking. While standing, a transition animation will be played. Press E to interact. Twinsen will do a little kick animation when interacting with something that spawns consumables. If you have more than 1 key, you can open the cellar door (nothing behind it yet tho). If anyone's wondering, there's nothing from the original game in there, every texture has been drawn by hand from scratch in 4K, along with all the needed PBR maps. The wallpaper was drawn by hand by (painstakingly) tracing the LBA2 intro from many angles to get the pattern, but also to get it to match with how it flows in the original game. All the armchair, chair and bed cushions where done with a cloth simulation. Twinsen has an IK system for stairs, leans in when walking on inclines, and has a system for bouncy hair (which sometimes glitches out). Also featuring: Volumetric fog, Particle systems

I sat down with some friends to watch the E3 press conferences, and we discussed witch games would really be an awesome surprise if they where announced, and mine was LBA3, witch of course didn't happen
![]() But when I see this, it somehow gets me more excited than any of the E3 games, even BGE2, as always, your work is awesome Jasiek, your attention to detail is really showing, the work you put down in things like the wall textures from the intro, lightning, light flare from window, choice of music, transitions between animations, small physics(pile of keys, ponytail), loading bar, plank in water etc. I really love this and hope theres time in your days to continue the work, cause its pure awesomeness <3 I didn't know Unity ran on Linux, didn't they just make a Linux version back in 2016 and then discontinued it? Anyways, Unity is very good for making games, and this genre is probably well fit for the engine ![]() Please continue! ![]() Last edited by GoofyLife; 2018-06-28 at 23:26. Reason: Spelling errors |

Hey!
Thanks guys! The in game menu's and the main menu are still temporary, the "plank" is a test for buoyancy, gonna replace it with a buoy object. As for Unity, yeah the linux editor is in active development, usually with the same frequency of builds as the Windows and Mac ones. Added the cellar, still a ways to go! Still have the radio, tomatoes, darts, Magic Ball and the Holo Map to put in. It needed a redesign as the old room layout was too long and didn't really work in 3D: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

And a second update!
Now containing more menus, some interactable objects bring out a box with text, tweaks to character animation, fixed hair physics and a lot more under the hood changes! Next on the agenda is an inventory screen, the magicball, gamepad controls and more behaviour modes. Windows and Linux builds here: https://bit.ly/2KQXICL

This looks really really phenomenal.
You wouldn't happen to be looking for anyone to join in and create some assets?

Right now I want to maintain the most control, and I'm doing it in small steps so it doesn't get out of control. I am missing some items for the house, like the radio, a barrel, Dino fly poster, darts, holomap, magicball. However I've got pretty specific requirements for assets: Whenever there is a flat surface, use surface weighted normals for the low poly and only then bake out normal maps. PBR with albedo, ao, normal, metallicness texture with metallic in the R channel and gloss in the alpha. 2k or 4k maps. Surface detail in additional, tileable maps (albedo and normal) if applicable. All models in .blend format for ease of edit - so I don't have to reimport them when I want to edit them(unity uses the Blender fbx exporter and converts them on import, but they remain easily editable on double click from the project assets panel) Models for exterior locations will contain LOD objects in the same file, with a suffix of LOD_0,LOD_1 etc. You can contact me on FB ![]()

Pretty amazing progress so far. The high quality on everything is another level.
I do like the menu, really gets that initial LBA2 chapter. Perhaps that has to change when you sdvance to a chapter in story with no Storm. I like the behaviour idea on the bottom left, but seems too big, and you get distracted with the size of it. The new text looks great as well and liked the touch when you reading posters ![]() Ah last thing, that rain view just before chaing scenes... ![]()

Hi! Thanks!
Yeah the small view on the bottom left was just to test performance with a render texture updating all the time. I moved it to an inventory screen, which is now a combined stats, inventory, behaviour screen and is partly done. The inventory code was there for months, and working behind the scenes, I'm only now plugging it into a ui. And yeah if I ever get to a point where the storm has cleared the main menu would change accordingly. It still has some missing effects, sound of the waves, lightning and moving clouds. It's also getting a buoy to the right of the menu with a tolling bell and a light, being rocked on the waves.

Cheers Jan. That more or less matches the workflow I'm familiar with (I work with Maya and Substance Painter). I'm terrible at following up on personal projects so not making any promises but if I do find the time this would be my first choice to jump in on, it's just so well made.
If you'd like some constructive input on the art, there's two things that got my attention. The floor tiles could be a bit more subtle (sharper, flatter?), as in slighly thinner seams, slightly less bump. Also, while I love your Twinsen, I think it would be improved with a better posture and small corrections on the proportions (smaller abdomen region, stronger chest and shoulders). Doesn't have to be captain America quite yet of course.

Yeah, a lot of that posture is a mix between animation, muscle group limits, bone positions and realtime IK.
I've shrunk the stomach slightly and pulled the chest a little bit forward, but I like the shoulders as round :P Animation is mostly from mocap, but I'm going to have to edit it slightly to get some kinks out at some point. There's also a slight limp in the normal walking animation, which needs fixing.

Looks very good
![]() Is the plan to get all things related to controls and interaction with the environment done before doing any level design? |
#48
|
||||
|
||||
Well there is some level design :P The house and the basement :P.
But yeah, I want all the major mechanics to work before I start on the outside - not to spread myself too thin. I also want to do gamepad support, that will probably ditch the modes, use the analog for walking and running, a toggle for fighting - or just a melee attack on one of the shoulders, a distance attack on the other, attack style on the direction buttons. And a toggle for sneaking. It would also get rid of the tank controls, in favour of a screen aligned walking mode, instead of character aligned.

I guess the tank-controls worked fine when playing with arrow-keys, but yea, I guess screen-align is better when using gamepad
