We interrupt your regular browsing of insignificant things for a live view of the Earth from the ISS:
http://eol.jsc.nasa.gov/HDEV/
In HD too!
Absolutely must see - it even shows exactly that its over.
For the next half hour or so its over the day side of the earth so things are visible. If its dark when you watch come back in half an hour and it will be light again, because the ISS orbits many many times a day.

ISS orbits the earth every 90 minutes or so, so every 45 minutes or less it will be in daylight.

Theres been some other cool/bizarre/tentatively very important news.

Quote:
Test results indicate that the RF resonant cavity thruster design, which is unique as an electric propulsion device, is producing a force that is not attributable to any classical electromagnetic phenomenon and therefore is potentially demonstrating an interaction with the quantum vacuum virtual plasma
http://ntrs.nasa.gov/search.jsp?R=20140006052

Basically Nasa has confirmed a positive result from what was previously thought to be a rather crackpot idea; propulsion without propellant.
Originally a British guy was claiming to have invented an engine based on this principle, then latter a Chinese team claimed the same result. Both dismissed by and large. But Nasa also detecting something is now putting pressure on everyone else to look into it.

For sure, the impulse detected is tiny. But given that it seems to invalidate conservation of momentum, if true its pretty incredible.
Useful for space travel too; Even really slow acceleration is useful if you can run your engine 24/7 on solar for years without running out.

Now, theres a lot of sites both hyping this, and a lot of them dismissing it too. But the thing is, when those groups are random Internet commentators, its probably best not to bet against the actual rocket scientists.

Polaris, he is at least comprehending that the direction he swims actually influences the direction that the aquarium moves, or else he wouldn't do things like he was doing in the video.

Still, that's realy cool! To know that fish can learn things like that, its amazing. Maybe they can learn even more complex things? Who knows.

Well, theres always a chance that the video was selectively edited.
But it doesn't seem implausible to me, fish certainly respond to fingers if they are very close to a tank.
I am not sure however, optically, how well a fish in a bowl looking though glass and air can see the world. I'll have to stick my head in a fishtank sometime :P

Still, you could do some cool experiments. Could you train it to go to a certain area for feeding? Have a little food dispenser that sprinkles food when its pushed?

Well, actually...

http://www.al.com/news/birmingham/in..._your_chi.html

I'll just say what I have always thought; Leave planet as a relative or cultural term, and use something more precise for scientific definitions.
I see little reason why the 3 characteristics they picked - which have arbitrary boundaries anyway - are useful for science when combined. Its like if fruit was defined as "round things which are nice to eat" rather then having anything to do with their origins or composition.

Just have a separate class system that can assess a few characteristics separately.
