New to 3d moddeling

Hi everyone, i am new to this site but have been a fan of lba for a very long time. When I disocevered this site I could see that there are a lot of people working on there own fangames. That inspired me to to try out some 3d moddeling and altough i am still a big noob when it comes to 3d moddeling i have started on my first twinsen model and i was wondering if am doing ok .

This is my twinsen atm. I think the general shape is ok now but still need to make feet and work on the hair as it sucks like this. Does anyone perhaps have any tips on the hair? Anyway mabey i will one day be good enough to help some of the great fancreations here .

depends what sort of hair your after, the game stuck with spheres like you have done. (or actualy, little facing-planes with circles )

What software are you using?
Looks like it could do with a "smooth" command. (not geometry smooth, just smoothing the shadeing).

Hi, i know about the shadow smooth but this does not help much. I think spheres look good in the original game but not today. I did copy the size and such from images i used in making this model so it is about the same as the original one.

I am using blender btw, it's powefull but free and as a bonus has an included game engine in it. I am making another small game to test the game engine out.

Thanks for the welcome btw

I think it has some kind of "NURBS thingie" to reduce the squareness.
I'lll check out the program this week.

Cool you will try it out to, mabey we can one day work togheter .

Some tutorials i did are on the following websites:
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro
http://www.blendernation.com/tutorials/

This is a screen of my model with smooth shadows:

Looks smooth enough but i still find it weird. I am going to work on the rest first i guess just have to find some free time. Btw does anyone know the RGB values or the hex code for a good skin color? Tried some of the original colors but they do not look right.

All the real 3d modeling I did was for animation means. Never really had to be economic about polys like you'll have to for in-game stuff.
I like working with Cinema4d.
How long are you working in blender, and what 3D-formats can you import in blender?

btw I dont really know these color codes... mostly I use color mixing thingies.

hmm blender's one of the worst modelling tools for games as low-poly models are harder to create than high-poly .... anyway , for the hair , make it like a normal ponytail , like in the movies , not like spheres ( in-game view ) . And well if u want to put that in a fan project ( game ) , I'd suggest reducing the polycount at 30% ... but overall , Good job !!! U really made the shapes look kewl

I didn't try out the game engine but a 10 mb engine + modelling tool has to put some questions .... anyway

Actually the game engine seems pretty advanced to me. For more info about the engine you should check wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_Blender

A nice feature is that you can make simple games without a single line of code. To is accomplished by logic bricks wich is very easy to use. But if you wan't to do more you can use python code, unfortunately i only know basic so will have to learn some python first. And finnaly the game engine is fully cross-platform.

Ok i changed the hair and added feet to the model. Only thing left to do is add details like eyes and such.

Anny comments on how it looks at the moment? Pretty happy with how it turned out as it is about the tenth model i made

His neck looks a bit long to me, but maybe that's only because you don't get a look at Twinsen's neck too often.

You are right it looks a bit long. But i am sure it is about the same as in the original game but in the game you only see him from above. It seems i still neet do experiment a bit with the look of the model.

I did instal blender yesterday and its quite different/confusing. I go and check some tutorials for the game building stuff. Also I had some problems importing models. How is your project?

Well not so good i'm afraid . I tried adding eyes and such but i am not able to get it right yet and after a few times i got a bit frustrated and have not tried it again. I think i need to do some more tuturials and try some simple models before i work on a more complicated model like this one, but did not have much time for this as i am also working on another project.

Oh and blender is the only 3d moddeling tool i ever used so i did not know what to think of the interface. The most difficult thing is that you do alomost everything in blender with your keyboard and you need to learn al the key combinations.

Okay, I like the fact its open source, It's free and you own the rights of what you make in it. The interface is quite different from the others I know.

Do you have a link to a tuturial site?

Also I found these simple games made using Blender...they run muts to slow on my computer. Makes me doubt if its what I'm looking for.

The games run very good on my system so that is weird. I have made some small games myself to and they run great to and i do not have a super pc.

I have posted some tutorials a few posts back:
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro
http://www.blendernation.com/tutorials/
And here a links to a lot more:
http://mediawiki.blender.org/index.php/Tutorials
http://mediawiki.blender.org/index.php/Tutorials/Links

Btw i read that future versions will have ogre3d integrated, perhaps is that a faster engine, http://www.ogre3d.org/.

Great I'll check them today.
Importing my models still doesn't work properly btw.
Succes on your projects.
