I voted for The Empire, but I must say I REALLY like the installation music (LBA2) most.

But lba music is not midi, so you didn't get to play with the full cd quality audiotrack?
There are some parts midi, but overall it should be cd music.

Totally obnoxious. But... that's just my opinion.
Hm I can see that, but you checked some others as well too?

Actually, I played with first without sound and it wasn't. I didn't know how to configure the sound card in the DOS mode of Win98.

Generally, when I play LBA1 in DosBox, the music is lower quality than in LbaWin probably beacuse of the limited capabilities of the sound card that DosBox emulates (and maybe because of the midi_mi_win.hqr file which LbaWin uses instead of the original file). So I recommend everyone who uses Windows to try LbaWin, it has much better sound quality.

Probably. To be precise, LbaWin sounds much less like midi than DosBox (which is what the GOG version uses).

Actually I think it's possible with the files from the GOG version but complicated. But I think it'd be no problem for you to download a CD image if you've already bought the game on GOG. After that you could mount or burn the image and install LbaWin which is pretty straightforward.

The midi hqr file (midi_mi.hqr or midi_sb.hqr) contains the midi (actually xmid) versions of the CD tracks and short songs too. The problem is that DosBox sometimes plays the midi version of CD tracks from the midi hqr file. Also, the short songs are always played from the midi hqr file.

How odd. But still. To not recognize the lba1 music while it is so....deep. Maybe you really need to play the game with it to understand. My music teacher hated lba1 music and tolerated lba2's music.

The GOG version includes a CD image in the game directory (after you installed it). Actually the lba.dat and lba.gog files are a .bin/.cue pair with the .dat being the .cue and the .gog being the .bin. Thus, you can mount this image in a virtual optical drive or burn it to a disc. The only difference with the original CD is that this image doesn't include the voice (.vox) files but this isn't a problem since they're located in the vox folder under the GOG.com game folder. You can install and play LbaWin using this image but you must ignore any errors related to the "non-exsistence" of the voice files during the installation and copy the vox folder from the GOG.com game folder to the LbaWin game folder after it. You always need the have the CD image mounted in the virtual drive or the actual disc in the drive when you play the game.

What if you run the GoG version, but overwrite the midi.hqr with LBAWin's one?

(nospace still feels odd...)
