Anyone tried messing with MIDI soundfonts?

And if so which do you think sounds the best for LBA?

I recently purchased the GOG version of LBA and anyone who has used LBAWin in the past will recognise straight away that the MIDI music sounds different to LBAWin. I've tried three so far (Weeds, Chorium and Microsofts Default SF) and I think I prefer the default one. Not sure if it's because I'm used to it through LBAWin or not but it's what I prefer .

I always though that the midis in the GOG version were pretty good as is. But it had been a while since I played the cd version so I can't compare them very well.

I don't know, I always preferred LBAWin. The MIDIs in DOSBox always sounded strange to me. I never changed the sound font, though.

The midis are the same in all versions. The only difference is the sound fount your computer uses to play them. Remember: a midi file only contains "sheets" for notes, not an actual sound recording! Your PC needs to come up with sounds for the respective instruments and play it "live".

The midis sound different in LbaWin than in DosBox for me. I think that's because LbaWin uses a different midi hqr file (midi_mi_win.hqr) which sounds better on Windows.

LBAwin uses midi_mi_win.hqr which is orginal midi converted to the new format (like MP3).
Orginal version (like DosBox) uses orginal midi
That is different;p

Except MP3 is a waveform audio format, not a music format. I doubt MIDI_MI_WIN.HQR uses MP3. From what I know, MIDI_MI_WIN.HQR has the stuff in .MID format, while the original MIDI_MI.HQR file has the stuff in .XMI format.

A little more information about LBA(2)-Midi and the use of soundfonts can be found here.
