Desert Island Racer

Just wondering, what's the purpose of this racer on Desert Island? I tried racing him lots of times but never got any results...
Maybe he's just an distraction?

He brings you back your car if you forget it on the Balsam-flower-Rock.
Though it's quite expensive.

For a long time, I assumed that I has missed out on some sidequest that allowed me to upgrade the car and race him. I didn't realize that it was intentional that you'll never be able to beat him...you simply follow his gestures to get the clover.

This may have been answered already, and I forget, so apologies...but has it ever been revealed (from the LBA 2 script, Fred, etc.) that the racetrack on Desert Island was supposed to have a more substantial role in the game?

You have to FOLLOW hiw closely, not overtake him.

Here, I am the best. Nobody can follow me. Try if you want.
If you manage to do that, he'll give you a clover.

If you win the clover from him after the Zeelichian invasion, he'll say this:
Quote:
at Island of the White Leaf Desert
I am going to tell you a little secret: a wizard told me that he might have hidden a protective spell on the island across from the Hacienda.
It's the game's only hint at the protection spell.

I didn't know about that...

Like Zoe says, supposedly it's a place to practice your driving.

This is one of the quotes that leads me to think that perhaps driving could have been planned to have driving play a bigger role in the game. Not that I'm a big fan of that type of challenge in a non-racing game, just that it seemed like a curious addition to that area without anything really going on.

Well half of Desert Island is consisting of useless corners with gimmicks you never need for the real game.

The racetrack is also used to magically teleport your car to you, if you know how and when

Well right, but I mean, we're not talking about just bare space or random NPCs. The racetrack seems to have required a little more effort than just "sprinkle this area with a few crabs and palm trees"

Everything is surprisingly simpler with a scripting system. I don't imagine it took too much effort on their part to implement it.

You do know it required graphics too, right?

Yes, but back then, art was much simpler to create. Plus, many of the assets are reusable.

A valid point. It just seems like an awful lot of trouble for a section of the game that is ultimately irrelevant. Theoretically, you could play the game and never need to visit the racetrack at all. That strikes me as odd. Not that there aren't sections of games where there is just dead space, or maybe spots only for easter eggs. But something tells me there may have been more to the racetrack in the initial plans.

Maybe just some problems with deadlines that they couldn't improve the race track?

I think the final changes to the script have something to do with the (now 'useless') racetrack. Note the guy mentions the protection spell, which was first meant to be acquired by the tests of wizardry. So at first, the race track wasn't meant to give you note to the protection spell. Some of its purpose changed.

I speculated before that maybe driving was supposed to play a larger role in the game, but I'm not so sure. It doesn't seem to "fit" with the LBA play style. I'm thinking that a race might not have been out of the question. Perhaps they couldn't perfect the AI of the NPC racer in such a way that would allow the user to win? I don't know. I just always hated that I couldn't beat that son of a bitch!

Maybe a race to get the protection spell? That seems kind of goofy. Or maybe more clues? I don't know.

According to the LBA 2 video interview found on the site, the secret video of the esmers kidnapping the kids took about 6 months to create. And there is nothing really extraordinary about this specific video that should have taken more than usual to make. So I guess that creating the race track took a bit more than a couple of minutes.

This thread reminds me by the way of a similar thread I started in 2003, in which I wondered why the snowboard is in the game .

If it took all of them six months to create one video, then they must have spent the whole development cycle working on just the videos and not the game.

I actually don't know if it took all of them. One creator says that he's been working on this video for 6 months (can't remember who it was).

Maybe they had other plans for this video?

They probably had. The script says the children had a kind of magical power in them, which they didn't receive at the end. If this principle wasn't decided from the very beginning, it could have haunted for a long time in the making of this video.

Where did she get the car in the first place, and why was it missing a steering wheel?
Why does the gun upgrade with your magic level, if it doesn't use up any magic?

And how did she get it on Desert Island if you cannot return it to Citadel Island?
