Spotlight on items- Magic ball

The magic ball, your very first weapon to combat enemies in a strange new world. To say the magic ball is the quintessential item of the game, would hardly do it justice. It is your best best for killing the majority of enemies in the first game and still plays an essential part in the second.

The magic ball has four levels of power in both games, yellow, green, red and fireball. Each level requires a certain item -tunic, book of bu, sendells medallion and a flash of clear water in the first game, - tunic, wizard diploma, sendells ball and dark monks key in the second. The colour of the enemy indicates the level of magic required to hurt them, the majority of the time. Through exceptions such as clone soldiers or franco lab workers, exist.

The magic ball is both games, starting weapon and sole range weapon for the first. It is not only a weapon, but a method of reaching far away lever.

And strangely enough, it can magically attract keys from across the room. Though I cannot think of any circumstance where this is useful appart from that last room of the GazoGem Refinnery. Can you think of any?

By the way:

fixed, as for keys, i would often deliberately not pick the keys up, in order to use the magic ball ball for the lolz

Perhaps in the blowtron test room on Mosquibee island if you use the lighting bolt to blow up all the balls. Sometimes the ball containing the key can be out in the black void, rendering the key inaccessible by other means if it blows up while being there.

Come to think of it, how many times in the games do you actually need to use discreet mode with the Magic Ball?

Several times, specially if you play the game somewhat stealthy as I did, most of the times. It is also awesome to reach enemies or levers who are in places above you, as the ball will go much higher.

Is the magic ball conjured, or is it a physical ball with magical properties?

Good thinking! It is interesting to note that Twinsen never uses the Magic Ball in any cutscene. We only see it rendered on LBA 1's splash screen, it looks conjured (but then how can Twinsen store it in his cellar?)

Discreet mode is also common use for deviating fireball trajectories like in the school of magic

Sometimes the key falls to an unreachable/death place like lava or water. Maybe they gave the ball that function to solve this problem if it ever happened.

Yeah! That's pretty useful! You can "cheat" if you dodge while in discreet mode... it's a fast discreet mode :P

The mentioning of the legend or Sendell has since been forbidden by Dr. FunFrock. Meanwhile... a young quetch named Twinsen has been having strange dreams...
